Miley is the daughter of country legend Billy Ray and first hit the big time when she landed the lead in Disney’s Hannah Montana. Thanks to the success of the show, she went on to launch a hugely successful singing career and continues to land parts in films.

Did Miley Cyrus’ Ex-Girlfriend Stella Maxwell Inspire New Love Song?

Before rekindling her romance with Liam Hemsworth, the pansexual pop star Miley Cyrus was in a low-profile relationship with Kristen Stewart’s current girlfriend, Stella Maxwell.

Now, two years after their breakup, Cyrus is let out a subtle hint as to why the summer fling with the Victoria’s Secret model ended.

Over the last week, the singer has been teasing her new tracks from Younger Now, on social media, and in a 15-second clip released, the singer sings about a woman’s inability to fall for another girl while still in love with her ex-boyfriend

Many are now speculating the track was inspired by her romance with Maxwell.

Without hearing the full version, it’s hard to decrypt if She’s Not Him is about Maxwell – or if it’s suggesting the love interest’s gender factors into the equation.

Miley previously opened up about her new album to Billboard magazine and revealed that a lot of her music was inspired by Hemsworth.

Lyrics such as “It’s a brand new start, a dream come true, in Malibu,” in her first single Malibu are clearly a nod to her relationship with the Australian actor.

However, while fans are just getting their first taste of the songs, Cyrus says she is already over the album.

She told BBC Radio 1

I’m already working on the next one. I’m already two songs deep on the next one. I’m over this now. I want to figure out what I want to do next. Hopefully, I can take some time — chill with the dogs, hang with the pigs a little bit more, take some time off. But just keep writing.”

Gossipmongers say Ellen DeGeneres is ‘miserable’ with Portia de Rossi

Amid reports that Ellen DeGeneres and her wife of nearly 9 years have been observed in embarrassing fights on the set of her show, caught looking glum at dinners out on the town in addition to their decision to sell their magnificent weekend getaway mansion in Santa Barbara, tongues are wagging in Hollywood that a breakup is looming for the hot power couple. (LGBTQ Nation )

A source said

They’ve been trying really hard to keep their marriage together, but it seems like time is running out. They’re just always at each other’s throats.

Ellen wants to plan an elaborate anniversary and Portia just wants her to concentrate on fixing their marriage,” the insider told the publication.

She feels like Ellen puts a Band-Aid on their problems.”

The gossip comes after $58.6m of the couple’s assets were put up for sale, including a home in Santa Barbara, California, which Ellen had previously described as her “forever” home.

They are also selling a luxury condo in Beverley Hills, which they bought in 2014.

They’re not only headed for a divorce, but they’re also secretly splitting up their assets before they make an official announcement. Not only will they not be growing old in that [Santa Barbara] home, which was their dream, but they won’t be growing old together, period,”

Grey’s Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw says playing a lesbian has changed her life

Grey’s Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw, who is Arizona on the show, has opened up about how playing a lesbian has changed her life.

She told Yahoo Style.

I never would have imagined that I would be able to play a character that would feel like it does so much good.”

She added, it could also provide a crucial tool in teaching family members or friends about homosexuality.

If it’s someone watching it who has someone in their life who is gay, and they might have not understood it before … all of a sudden they have another person or another thing to point to and say: ‘Oh, that’s a different context.’

Being able to play a lesbian as a series regular on television has been enormously rewarding.”

Capshaw, who has also appeared on The L Word and Bones, proudly recalled an example of how representation can help how people see the LGBT community.

My daughter goes to preschool, and the preschool has all kinds of families. “And I guess one of the kids said: ‘You have to have a mom and a dad to have a baby.’ And my daughter said: ‘No. No, you don’t.’ And this was all overheard and told to me later. She said, in a very kind and patient way to that child: ‘There can be a mom and a mom and a dad and a mom and there can be a dad and a dad.’”

10 Celebrities Who Came Out This Year

Whether you admit it or not, we’ve all had quite a rough year one way or another. If it wasn’t evident in the first quarter, now that we’re nearing the end, we can pretty much assume how bad it’s gotten. But it ain’t all gloomy, screwed news. Some of our faves took time to bring about positivity through their coming outs.

Let’s rejoice and remember that life has its ups and downs, but these are one for the books.

1. Kristen Stewart

kristen-stewart-1

The Still Alice star came out mid this year after revealing in an interview with Elle UK how in love she is with her then girlfriend, Alicia Cargile. It’s been speculated many times now because of the way the actress behaves and how she likes representing herself, but more so because she skirts around questions that required any labels.

2, Miley Cyrus

miley-cyrus

Cyrus, in an interview with Variety earlier this year, stated how she “didn’t really feel straight” and “didn’t really feel gay” either. “It’s because I’m not,” she says. The former Hannah Montana protagonist identifies as pansexual and even recounts her first relationship to be with a “chick”. Miley says she would never let anyone put her identity in a box.

3. Lily-Rose Depp

This 17-year-old is using social media to spread awareness. Not only did she come out as sexually fluid via Instagram, she’s also part of the Self Evident Truth Project. This is a photographic document of 10,000 people in the USA that identify as anything other than 100% straight.

4. Bella Thorne

The former Disney star doesn’t want frills and cheap thrills. She’s all about getting straight to the point and just coming right out – quite literally. A fan asked her on twitter if she was bisexual to which she answered, “yes”.

5. Bex Taylor-Klaus

The Scream actress came out to the rest of the internet in a very casual tweet, followed by a YouNow stream addressing further questions. Taylor-Klaus revealed the reason for coming out this way, “So I have a chance to interact with those of you who feel that way and who kind of want to know more.”

6. Holland Taylor

Speaking with WNYC, Holland Taylor revealed she was in a serious relationship with a woman. When asked if she wanted to elaborate on her sexuality, she responded, “I haven’t come out because I am out. I live out.”

Turns out that lady was Sarah Paulson, and ever since the couple has been very out with their relationship.

7. Mara Wilson

she-was-a-huge-star-in-the-90s-but-whatever-happened-to-matilda-actor-mara-wilson-551322

In the wake of the devastating mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, Mara Wilson took to Twitter to come out of the closet in June 2016. The Matilda star confirmed to fans via a series of tweets that she’s bisexual, and after receiving a flurry of responses signed off the site, saying, “Thank you so much to everybody who has sent me words of support. I support you all, too.

8. Aubrey Plaza

Aubrey Plaza

Plaza revealed earlier in 2016 that gender “isn’t a factor” for her when it comes to dating and romantic relationships. She did not call herself a bisexual, but she did say that she has a very “androgynous and masculine” aura about her, and that tends to attract many different kinds of people, which she is totally cool with.

9. Amandla Stenberg

Amandla Stenberg

Amandla Stenberg came out in a heartfelt video in early 2016 to tell the world that she was “a black bisexual woman” and that she understands the discrimination and hate that is being flung at the LGBTQ community. She said that she feels the pain and that it hurts, and she wants to be an advocate for change and acceptance.

Given her reputation and presence in the teenager public sphere, Stenberg talked to Teen Vogue via SnapChat to interact with the magazine and its readers. She feels so much better now that she doesn’t have to hide or limit who she is and how she really feels. Citing other black actresses and singers, Stenberg said that she was getting loads of support from the Hollywood community and that she was extremely grateful for that.

10. Rowan Blanchard

14-year-old actress Rowan Blanchard spoke up at the start of 2016 and proclaimed that she did not want to be tied down by any labels in regards to her sexuality. Blanchard used Twitter to declare to the world that she was not interested in sticking a label on herself or her identity, but that she preferred to just be known as a queer actress. In her Tweet, the actress wrote: “I personally don’t wanna label myself as straight, gay, or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with – just existing.” She is “open to liking any gender,” and that is why she identifies as queer.

The star of the Disney Channel TV series Girl Meets World public statement could be the shifting of tides when it comes to the Disney Channel and its reputation for employing straight-laced and clean cut child and teenage actors.

Miley Cyrus Talks Growing Up Pansexual: “I Always Hated the Word Bisexual”

Cyrus first came out as pansexual just over a year ago, expressing the fluid nature of her sexuality. Since then, she has be incredible out-spoken about her struggle to come to terms with her sexuality

In a recent interview with Variety magazine, Cyrus said she become more aware of her sexual orientation between the age of 10 and 12 – just before she started filming Hannah Montana.

The pop singer also described the moment she realised she was pansexual. and the realisation did not fit into one specific gender, explaining she had always felt equally aligned with both genders.

I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality. I always hated the word ‘bisexual’ because that’s even putting me in a box”

She continued

I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl. Also, my nipple pasties and shit never felt sexualised to me. My eyes started opening in the fifth or sixth grade. My first relationship in my life was with a chick.”

miley-cyrus-variety-warwick-saint

Cyrus explained she first figured out she was pansexual when she realised what it meant.

I went to the LGBTQ centre here in LA. And I started hearing these stories. I saw one human in particular who didn’t identify as male or female. Looking at them, they were both: beautiful and sexy and tough but vulnerable and feminine but masculine. And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life.”

Cyrus said she had felt involved in the LGBTQ community for the entirety of her life.

Even though I may seem very different, people may not see me as neutral as I feel. But I feel very neutral. I think that was the first gender-neutral person I’d ever met. Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more. I was like, ‘Oh – that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not.’”

She also spoke of growing up in a deeply religious family in the deep South in Franklin, Tennessee, saying that despite the fact her parents didn’t understand her sexuality straight away, she knew they would learn to.

Cyrus explained that her mum had since apologised for not being more immediately understanding about her sexuality.

On The Voice this young girl started crying when she left, because I’m the reason she came out. My mom started crying. She was like, “I’m so sorry about the way I was when you were that age and coming out.” She never understood me until she saw that girl who couldn’t be herself. It was very cool.”

Cyrus first came out as pansexual just over a year ago, expressing the fluid nature of her sexuality.

10 Quotes To Inspire (And Reassure) Anyone Worried About Discussing Their Sexuality

Today marks the 28th anniversary of National Coming Out Day.

For some, coming out to even their nearest and dearest can feel like a scary task; for others, almost an insurmountable challenge.

But the last year has been an excellent one for LGBTQ visibility, with a number of high-profile figures speaking honestly and forthrightly about their sexuality and same-sex relationships.

1. Miley Cyrus

My whole life, I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality. I always hated the word ‘bisexual,’ because that’s even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl. Also, my nipple pasties and sh– never felt sexualized to me. My eyes started opening in the fifth or sixth grade. 2. Ellen Page

Being in the closet hurt my career way more than being out and being happy and feeling inspired again; being able to fuse my authentic self with my creative interests.”

3. Mara Wilson

I used to identify as mostly straight. I’ve embraced the Bi/Queer label lately.

The LGBTQ community has always felt like home, especially a few years later when I, uh, learned something about myself.”

4. Kristen Stewart

When I was dating a guy I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialised, so I didn’t like it. We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something that it’s not.’ I didn’t like that.

But then it changed when I started dating a girl. I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”

5. Amanda Stenberg

Amandla Stenberg

It’s a really, really hard thing to be silenced and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mould yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t in.

As someone who identifies as a black, bisexual woman, I’ve been through it and it hurts and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable…but then I realised because of Solange and Ava DuVernay and Willow [Smith] and all the black girls watching this right now that there’s absolutely nothing to change. We cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears and be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow.”

6. Holland Taylor

Holland Taylor

It’s awkward because if I talk about relationships in my life or people that have been in my life … I’d like to be able to just say that, without having to stop and say, ‘so have you come out?’ No, I haven’t come out because I am out. I live out.”

7. Eva Gutowski

It’s awkward because if I talk about relationships in my life or people that have been in my life … I’d like to be able to just say that, without having to stop and say, ‘so have you come out?’ No, I haven’t come out because I am out. I live out.”

Just because you haven’t dated someone of the same sex does not mean you can’t be taken seriously as a bisexual. I am ready for myself to fall in love with someone, no matter who they end up being, and have been since I was 12. Boy or girl.”

8. Rachel Maddow

The single best thing about coming out of the closet is that nobody can insult you by telling you what you’ve just told them.”

9. Bella Thorne

Not only today but all days we should celebrate acceptance of others. Be who you want to be and it will take you to being your happiest self! #bivisibilityday.”

Miley Cyrus And Zoë Kravitz Team Up For Sapphic Love Duet – ‘Teardrop’

Zoë Kravitz and her band Lolawolf, have team up with pansexual pop star Miley Cyrus for a new track about girl-on-girl affections.

The relatively low-key track called Teardrop, which features trippy echoes and heavy electronic synth, is a far cry from Cyrus’s well known hits like, We Can’t Stop and Party in the U.S.A.

The track’s lyrics were probably a selling point for the Happy Hippie Foundation founder to get involved as well.

They’re about a girl falling in love with another girl.

“But you made me feel so good. I can make a teardrop, Girl you make me feel so good, Teardrop.”

What better song for a passionate LGBTQ supporter like Miley to lend her unique vocals to?

Cyrus teased the track on Instagram Wednesday, along with a link to buy it on iTunes.

Disney Teen Star Calls For Greater LGBTQ Representation, As She Opens Up About Her Own Sexuality

14-year-old Disney actress, Rowan Blanchard has opened up about her sexuality, and how she doesn’t want to label herself.

Blanchard, who plays lead character Riley Matthews on the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World (the sequel to sitcom Boy Meets World), took to Twitter over the weekend — and on the heels of penning the first-person piece “Sorry, Not Sorry: How I Quit Apologizing for Existing” for Rookie Magazine — the 14-year-old explained in a series of tweets how though she has “only ever liked boys,” she didn’t want to label herself as “straight gay whateva.”

https://twitter.com/rowblanchard/status/688510489962254337

The actress responded:

Would really be here for this! If not Riley- it’s vvv important to me, being queer, that there is representation on our show. & being queer to me just means not putting a label on sexuality- just existing.”

After casually dropping that titbit into conversation, Blanchard was surprised by the reaction from fans.

Responding to claims that her sexuality was “obvious”, she hit back: “literally what the hell u don’t ‘know’ someone’s sexuality”.

She subsequently wrote:

In my life – only ever liked boys. However I personally don’t wanna label myself as straight, gay or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with—just existing;)

[I’m] open to liking any gender in future is why I identify as queer.”

Former Disney star Miley Cyrus (who played Hannah Montana) was been championing the movement to resist labelling sexuality and gender identity.

Cyrus explained the difference for her between dating men and women:

That made me feel [dating a man] like I had to be a femme-bot, which I’m not. And then when I was with a girl, I felt like, ‘Oh sh-t, she’s going to need someone to protect her, so I’m going to need to have this macho energy.’ And that didn’t feel right either.”

Girl Meets World in its first two seasons has tackled weighty topics such as gender equality and Asperger’s syndrome.

10 Famous Women Who Came Out in 2015

Last year, we brought you our top 10 list of out women who ‘totally rocked’ 2014, but this year we’re switching it up a bit as so many famous ladies found the courage to start living their truths (or 2015 was just the year that they spoke about their identities to the media) that we couldn’t help but celebrate!

Our hearts have swelled and we may have shed a few tears or so finding out that yes, celebrities are just like us. So without further ado, here’s our list of 10 famous women who came out during 2015.

1. Holland Taylor

Holland Taylor

If you’re up to date on queer media then you’ll probably know Holland Taylor as Peggy Peabody in The L Word or as Mrs. Petrie in D.E.B.S, but if you’ve spent any time on the Internet in the last few weeks then you’ll know her from the media’s headlines.

During an interview with WYNC’s Death, Sex and Money podcast, Taylor explained that “I haven’t come out because I am out, I live out” and that she’s in her ‘first-ever deeply committed relationship’.

Calling the relationship “the most wonderful extraordinary thing that could have ever possibly happened in my life”, Taylor didn’t reveal her partner’s identity during the podcast but following Internet speculation, it was soon confirmed that her girlfriend is the one and only Sarah Paulson.

2. Kristen Stewart

kristen-stewart-short-hair-01

Kristen Stewart is best known to heterosexuals for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight movie franchise but she’s (probably) best known to the rest of us as the woman of our dreams. Indeed, after photos of her out and about with her ‘gal pal’ Alicia Cargile began to do the rounds, many began to ask whether or not Kristen Stewart is actually not-heterosexual.

Kristen Stewart gives a death stare getting coffee

After her mother appeared to out her, confirming the relationship between the two women, the actresses interview with NYLON was published. In it, she explained that

I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’ No, I do a job. Until I decide that I’m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving…I don’t.”

Moreover, she thinks that “in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”

3. Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner 05

When it comes to the Kardashian/Jenner family, it’s usually Kim, Khloe, Kylie or Kendall making the headlines but in June, it was Caitlyn Jenner as she came out as a trans woman.

In a beautiful photoshoot and interview with Vanity Fair, the Olympian and reality TV star revealed her true gender identity.

Caitlyn has been a controversial figure amongst the transgender community ever since (her E! reality show suggests that she still has a lot to learn about the struggles of less-privileged trans people) and on The Ellen DeGeneres show she admitted to the talk show host that she’s still a bit wary when it comes to same-sex marriage but her coming out did spark a conversation and it encouraged many other people to come out too.

4. Ingrid Nilsen

Ingrid Nilsen

If you don’t spend much time on YouTube then there’s a good chance that up until June of this year, you had no idea who Ingrid Nilsen was.

But, in an emotional, 19 minute video, the beauty and fashion vlogger revealed her struggle of being closeted and how much it meant to her to be able to tell those around her (and her almost 4 million subscribers) about her identity.

And, in a super cute turn of events, not long after Ingrid came out, she revealed that she’s dating (fellow YouTube superstar) Hannah Hart!

5. Jess Glynne

Rather Be Jess Glynne

Holy My Hand, Not Letting Go, My Love, Rather Be, and Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself; these massively popular songs all reached number 1 in the UK and earned Jess Glynne a place in the record books as the British solo female with the most #1 singles (a record she shares with Cheryl Fernandez Versini). But as we were all dancing along, Jess revealed exactly what inspired all of the tracks.

Her debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, was inspired by her break up with her ex-girlfriend, though she told The Daily Star Sunday that “I’m never going to put a label on my sexuality and people should never feel uncomfortable about who they love”.

6. Miley Cyrus

Miley-Cyrus-01

Miley Cyrus is one controversial figure and her tabloid-featuring antics mean that some people loathe her rather than like her.

However, plenty of people supported her when the former Disney star came out as pansexual earlier this year and she also spoke about her gender identity too.

Speaking to Paper magazine, the singer and actress told the publication that “I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl”.

Note: Despite this being a list of ‘out famous women’, Miley Cyrus identifies as gender-fluid and not as a woman.

7. Ramona Bachmann

Ramona Bachmann

This year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup was a defining moment of 2015 for so many reasons.

Not only was it the most viewed women’s world cup in the tournament’s history and not only did it ignite a debate about sexism and equal treatment (due to the women being paid less than the men and having to play on astro-turf) but because many non-heterosexual football players would be playing too.

Joining Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, Ali Krieger and several others was Swiss player Ramona Bachmann who actually came out at the world cup. She revealed that her girlfriend, Camille, was at the tournament supporting her and that they’d been together for almost a year.

8. Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne 07

Supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne is no stranger to the LGBTQ community having made headlines last year when she attended a basketball game with her then-girlfriend Michelle Rodriguez, with the two of them being all over each other as they sat court-side.

But in Vogue she spoke openly about her sexuality, saying that she’s in love with her girlfriend Annie Clark (known by her stage name, St. Vincent) and that she could fall for anyone of any gender.

Unfortunately, the Vogue interview seemed to frame her sexuality as a phase and not long after, Delevingne clarified, saying “my sexuality is not a phase. I am who I am”

Model and actress Patricia Velasquez is credited as being the world’s first Latina supermodel and in 1994 she was also the first Venezuelan model to be part of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. But what people didn’t know is that during that same decade – the 90s – Velasquez was also coming to terms with her identity as a gay woman.

In her memoir, Straight Walk: A Supermodel’s Journey to Finding Her Truth, she reveals that she first realised her sexuality after she fell for Sandra Bernhard and that

among the fashion world and fashion people, I always felt great because, you know, the fashion world is very open and I felt very welcome”.

10. Angel McCoughtry

Angel McCoughtry

Angel McCoughtry is one of the WNBA’s most talented players having helped the USA basketball team win Olympic gold and world championship gold, but earlier this year it wasn’t her basketball achievements that had everyone talking.

The sports web was abuzz as McCoughtry left Turkish club Fenerbahҫe (officially due to contractual disagreements) and came out on Instagram.

In an Instagram post with her fiancé, Brande Elise, the basketball star revealed that “yes we been discriminated against! We lost friends! Family members are upset! They said I disgraced my religion!” also claiming that Fenerbahҫe “threatened” her job if she didn’t post on social media saying that their relationship is a lie. Hardships aside, “one thing I do know”, wrote McCoughtry, “is that LOVE is a great feeling”

7 Of The Biggest Things To Affect Women in 2015

It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. 2015 has whizzed by like super progressive blur as so many important political decisions were made and so many important discussions were had about equality.

But what were the most influential? And which events made the most headlines?

Read on for our round up of the biggest things to affect women that happened in 2015.

1. Viola Davis’ Emmy Win

viola-davis

On this very site, we’ve mentioned countless times how Hollywood is happy to exclude and refuse to hire actors of colour altogether. So naturally, we (and many other people around the world) for ecstatic when Viola Davis won an Emmy Award for her role as bisexual lawyer Annalise Keating.

Making history as the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Viola Davis’ also gave an incredible speech that not only quoted abolitionist and humanitarian Harriet Tubman but it also name-checked other black actresses (such as Gabrielle Union and Kerry Washington) and called on Hollywood to offer the same opportunities to women of colour as it does to white women.

2. Misty Copeland Becomes the First Principal Dancer at the American Ballet Theatre

Misty Copeland

The ‘principal dancer’ is a dancer at the highest rank within a professional dance company; it’s the role that every ballet dancer would love to hold and it’s one that Misty Copeland, who has been a dancer at the American Ballet Theatre for 14 years, especially wanted to achieve. In her 2014 memoir, Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina, she revealed that “if I don’t rise to principal, people will feel I have failed them”.

But Misty Copeland needn’t have worried to much as in 2015 she was finally promoted to the role of principal dancer in a round of summer promotions. In her role, she became the very first African-American woman to become a principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre’s 75 year history and of the achievement.

3. Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage

Californians React To Supreme Court Rulings On Prop 8 And DOMA

In other historic news from 2015, in June, the United States’ Supreme Court finally had a vote on same-sex marriage. Previously, it had been up to each state in the country to decide individually whether or not same-sex couples could get married putting couples in a difficult position as it meant that they may have to travel hours away from home just to enjoy the same ‘big white wedding in a church’ privilege that opposite sex couples got to enjoy.

Thankfully, on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court voted to make same-sex marriage a right nationwide. This meant that one great obstacle on the road to equal rights had been defeated and that anywhere in the country, same sex couples could marry each other.

4. FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015

wambachkiss

Another big event making headlines over the summer of 2015 is the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Here at KitschMix we were excited not just because it’s always wonderful seeing talented women do what they do best but because many out athletes such as Megan Rapinoe, Casey Stoney and Abby Wambach would be taking part as well.

Not only did the England women’s national team reach their highest ever position in the tournament (they got 3rd place) but the final, where the USA beat Japan 5-2 also became the most watched football match in US history as it had 25.4 million viewers, beating the 18.2 million viewers who tuned into watch the US men take on Portugal the year before.

(That said, the tournament was also marred by criticism as FIFA made the women play on astro-turf unlike the men’s tournament which was played entirely on grass).

5. Hillary Clinton Running for President

Hillary Rodham Clinton Signs Copies Of Her Book 'Hard Choices' In New York

One of the dominating stories at the beginning of the year was whether or not Hillary Clinton – who had once tried to run for president in 2007 – would run for president again. In an official announcement video in April, Clinton confirmed that she’d be running for president and that she wanted to be a “champion” for “everyday Americans”.

While Clinton hasn’t always been so progressive (she was once against same-sex marriage), nor is she regarded as progressive as (fellow presidential candidate) Bernie Sanders, she has lots of viewpoints that could do some good. Clinton wants to reform the criminal justice system, offer comprehensive immigration reform with a “pathway to citizenship”, she supports LGBT equality and she hopes to close the wage gap between men too.

6. The Rise of the ‘F’ Word

0d306685e21c856d_455817550.xxxlarge_2x

Feminism, by definition, is the “advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of equality of the sexes” and while there are still plenty of people who do still think that it’s about women having more rights than men, in 2015, lots of influential women revealed why they were feminists,

These include Harry Potter star Emma Watson, girl group Fifth Harmony whose ‘Worth it’ music video included pro-women quotes and Taylor Swift who has spoken out about misogyny in the media and has championed powerful women with her ‘girl squad’ of friends including Serena Williams, supermodel Karlie Kloss and singer and actress Selena Gomez. Admittedly, a lot of the feminist rhetoric this year has surrounded cis, white women and has completely ignored the struggles of trans women and women of colour but it’s a positive step forward at least.

7. The MTV VMAs 2015

2015 MTV Video Music Awards - Press Room

And finally, we had the MTV Video Music Awards 2015. Hosted by professional headline-grabber and former Disney star Miley Cyrus, the MTV VMAs 2015 were always going to get serious attention and while they offended just as much as they did good (one example is comedian Rebel Wilson making light of police brutality), they did give us plenty to talk about.

In the run up to the show, Nicki Minaj called out MTV for ignoring her Anaconda music video saying that the company only “celebrates women with very slim bodies” and overlooks the contributions of black women. Then Taylor Swift got offended and accused the rapper of pitting women against each other and Miley Cyrus then chimed in saying that Minaj’s comments were “not polite”.

During the show, Nicki Minaj called Miley Cyrus out, before criticising her again in the days after the show, saying that Miley enjoys black culture without wanting to address the issues that face black people. It led to some very important and very necessary discussions about race in the media.

Also at the MTV VMAs, Blac Chyna and Amber Rose went as each others dates dressed in outfits emblazoned with things they’d been called (e.g ‘whore’, ‘bitch’, and ‘golddigger’) seemingly in an effort to reclaim those slurs. As eye-catching as their getups were, again, they got people having serious conversations.

Amy Schumer’s SNL Opening Monologue Was Genius

After Hillary Clinton hosted Saturday Night Live last week with special guest Miley Cyrus‘s tongue (well, that’s basically how I remember it), Amy Schumer was the star of this week’s much-improved episode.

2015_10_snlas_close

2015_10_snlas_mono2

Schumer’s opening monologue was a whirlwind tour de Schumer.

She talks about wanting better role models for young girls than the Kardashians and the time she thought she was dating Bradley Cooper.

Am I dating Bradley Cooper? I don’t know how Hollywood works, but I’m pretty sure that I’m dating Bradley Cooper.”

It was simple and no-frills and so good, just Shumer’s particular concoction of confidence and self-deprecation.

This year has arguably been the comedian’s biggest professional year: winning an Emmy, and starring in a hit movie.

Miley Cyrus’ New Album Contains Track About Sex With A Woman (Listen)

At the MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus, announced that she was following 2013’s Bangerz – her platinum-selling – major label pop album, with 23 sprawling new songs, now streaming free online.

And it would turn out the one of her songs Bang Me Box is about sex with a woman.

Miley Cyrus VMA 01

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1Bi0478cQE

In an interview with the New York Times, Cyrus talked about her identity and new album.

I feel very gender-fluid. For a long time I didn’t understand my own sexuality. I would get really frustrated and think I’d never understand what I am, because I can’t even figure out if I’m feeling more like a girl or boy. It took me talking to enough trans people to realize that I didn’t ever have to decide on one.”

Miley Cyrus Confirms She is Pansexual Not Bisexual

In a new interview with Elle Magazine, Miley Cyrus has clarified that she actually identifies as pansexual – the attraction to people regardless of sex or gender identity – rather than bisexual, which has been widely reported in the media.

Miley-Cyrus-September-2015-Cover-Star-ELLE-UK-01

She told the magazine:

I’m very open about it – I’m pansexual. But I’m not in a relationship. I’m 22, I’m going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I’m with.”

The Cyrus also spoke about to discusses why she decided to use her power, and popularity, to do something important by setting up her charity The Happy Hippie Foundation.

I was kind of embarrassed that I got paid money to shake my ass in a teddy bear costume. I should not be worth the amount I am while people live on the streets.”

Miley Cyrus 03

If you get your tits out, and they are all looking, then you can use that space to say something and get them to listen.”

The star says she has no plans to settle down just yet – with a person of any gender.

miley-cyrus-98

Earlier this year, when Cyrus revealed she had dated men and women

There are times in my life where I’ve had boyfriends or girlfriends. And there are times where I just love being with myself and don’t want to give part of myself away to someone else.

I think that’s a new freedom for women, especially. I don’t know that my mother would have been able to be 22 and secure in being alone. But my future doesn’t rely on having a partner.”

Miley Cyrus Goes Undercover To Find Out What The Public Really Think Of Her

Like her or loathe her, everyone has an opinion on Miley Cyrus. So the singer went undercover on Jimmy Kimmel’s show to see what people really thought of her.

Miley Cyrus

Cyrus disguised herself as an Australian called Janet for the talk show host’s ‘I Witness News’ segment and took to the streets of LA to see if, despite the tabloid frenzy, people actually thought she was a bad role model.

One interviewee not only blasted the entire Cyrus family, but later on suggested,

I think she’s starving for attention and that’s why she’s doing it all crazy like that. She’s missing something somewhere.”

miley-janet

Cyrus said, not missing a beat.

In her heart, probably. In her deep soul.”

The awkwardness continued. Cyrus spoke with a man who had no problem with her, but liked Taylor Swift better.

Speaking to another woman, Cyrus pretended to forget her own father’s name while the woman posited,

I think she lost her mind in the Hollywood madness.”

Still, Cyrus had some fun with some of her interviewees, including two teens who sang the chorus of “We Can’t Stop” before joining the eager, pant-suited Janet for a quick twerk. The entire bit ended with one man telling Janet straight up, “I think you’re Miley Cyrus right now.”

Turning towards the man and offering him a peak down her blouse.

Looks like Miley Cyrus, doesn’t it? I need you to keep that on the DL, but it’s Miley Cyrus’ titties. Janet up here, Miley down here.”

If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t hate Miley Cyrus, she is hosting the VMA music awards this weekend, which, given the fracas between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift last month, might make for quite good telly.>

Another Day, Another Picture of Miley Cryus & ‘Confirmed’ GF Stella Maxwell For Us to Pore Over

Ah it’s another day, and therefore there is another saucy picture of Miley Cyrus on social media for us pore over – 🙂

In a new image – taken by photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot for an upcoming W Magazine shoot – Cyrus is seen topless while the girlfriend (as confirmed by WStella Maxwell feeds her cake.

mert-marcus-1980s-01mert-marcus-1980s-03mert-marcus-1980s-02

Stella was first linked to Miley in May, but the pair confirmed they were more than good friends after they were spotted sharing a passionate smooch on the set of Miley’s video last month.

The kiss came after Miley, who was previously engaged to Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth, told Paper Magazine that she was open to bisexuality.

Just For Show: Singer Claims Miley Cyrus And Other Bisexual Stars Out Themselves For The PR

Dutch singer, Loona has voiced her opinion on bisexual female celebrities. Saying she believes they out themselves as bi as PR stunts.

Dutch singer, Loona

Talking on a German TV channel Punkt 12, the singer referred to Kristen Stewart, Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevingne.

On Cyrus’ relationship with Stella Maxwell, the singer doesn’t believe this honest.

Miley Cyrus is a girl only looking for publicity. So I don’t believe her; and it’s definitely a PR stunt.’

Intimate_In_pictures_obtained_by_Miley_Cyrus_and_Stel-a-3_1435790243967

She went on to describe Stewart (who is apparently dating Alicia Cargile), as being ‘more of a masculine type’, and that she ‘could accept it [bisexuality] from her.’

Kristen-Stewart-Alicia-Cargile-01

British model Delevingne, who recently made her relationship to singer Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) public, was the only one the Dutch singer believed to be honest about her sexuality.

cara-st_vincent-01

She’s got a bit of this manly… she’s a tough girl. But at some point, in ten, fifteen years, she’ll have a nice man and some lovely children.’

So why is Loona such an ‘authority’ on such matters. Well the singer admitted to faking a same-sex relationship with a German model for PR purposes in 2013. That stunt got her a lot of attention and much needed PR to push her career in the right direction.

Miley Cyrus and Stella Maxwell ‘Caught’ Making Out

Miley Cyrus and Victoria Secret’s model, Stella Maxwell, have been spending a lot of time together (see Instagram), resulting in a explosion dating rumours. Any gender fluid couple posting that many pictures together has got to be a couple right?

https://instagram.com/p/4DNNI4wzNA/

Well, the rumours are at least partially true. The pair were spotted kissing during a break on set of Cyrus’ upcoming music video, with TMZ catching them making out against a bus – capturing it on video.

Intimate_In_pictures_obtained_by_Miley_Cyrus_and_Stel-a-3_1435790243967

This appears to be an invasion of privacy that is not above TMZ, of course, (who loves a good sex tape). But don’t feel weird about watching the video (which, I may add, depicts a SERIOUS make out session. There’s ass grabbing and hands being shoved down pants and everything), Cyrus and Maxwell make eye-contact with the camera before going at it.

It’s reported that both were very aware that photographers were snapping photos of them, but the two seemed comfortable enough to ignore them. They both simply looked happy and not interested in hiding it.

In a candid interview with Paper Magazine back in June, Cyrus expressed,

I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult—anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.”

She recalled the first time she shared her attraction towards women with her mother and telling her,

I love them. I love them like I love boys.”

Maxwell also has spoken about Cyrus in the past, sharing the story of how they met with V Magazine:

We met through Grindr… Nah, joking. We met through mutual friends via Instagram, which is where Cheyne [Cyrus’s assistant] contacted me about taking some photos. It’s been a trip to hang out and see a little of their world. Felt very organic and right.”

But when asked if she considered Miley her significant other, Maxwell responded cryptically,

Define significant…”

13 Women Who Dare To Challenge Gender Stereotypes in the Media

From Miley Cyrus to Ruby Rose, stars are shedding a light on a different kind of gender identity.

These women refuse to adhere to dated, oppressive standards set on gender and beauty. They are changing the game and using their fame to help level the playing field for the women of tomorrow.

1. Ruby Rose

The 29-year-old stars as inmate Stella Carlin on season 3 of the show and thanks to her performance, her gorgeous androgynous looks and her openness about her gender fluidity, the model-now-actress is making waves when it comes gender perceptions in the media.

gender-stereotypes-celebs-02

We’re all really breaking down the whole gender binary system. It’s like hold on, I don’t identify as this and I don’t identify as that, I’m kind of somewhere in the middle and what does that mean? And society is being more supportive than ever before.”

2. Lena Dunham

gender-stereotypes-celebs-03

Despite Lena Dunham being an enormously successful writer, actress, and producer, she has been the subject of harsh criticism regarding her appearance. In an interview with Gothamist , Lena explained her body ‘Zen’ philosophy:

We’re one weight one day, we’re one weight another day, and some day our body just doesn’t even exist at all! It’s just a vessel I’ve been given to move through this life. I think about my body as a tool to do the stuff I need to do, but not the be all and end all of my existence.”

3. Samira Wiley

gender-stereotypes-celebs-04

Samira Wiley breakout role came playing Poussey Washington in the Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black. Wiley’s androgynous beauty is ever present in the show. However, even though her character is always dressed in khaki slacks and a baggy sweatshirt, she does like to mix things up in real life.

Over the past few years since my own public image has increased tenfold, I have been overwhelmed to witness the profound ways that I am able to make a difference simply by living my life openly, and with love.”

4. Lea Delaria

gender-stereotypes-celebs-05

Actress, comedienne, jazz musician, Lea Delaria has gained media traction with her recurring character on Orange is the New Black. However, before then she was the first openly gay comic to break the late-night talk-show barrier with her appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1993.

DeLaria has performed stand-up comedy for more than 25 years and is a prominent figure in the world of LGBT comedy. She began her career billing herself as “That [expletive] Dyke,” explaining that when she walked down the street, people would yell that at her.

I think the most basic prerequisite of being a woman is that you must WANT me. if you don’t want me, then your not a woman.”

5. Gwendolyn Christie

gender-stereotypes-celebs-08

Christie knew that having traditional aspects of feminity (long hair, heels, make-up) stripped away would be important for her work and in terms of her own development. “I would be confronting elements of myself that I didn’t want to confront.”

6. Ellen Degeneres

gender-stereotypes-celebs-09

Ellen Degeneres’s career was all but lost when she came out of the closet in 1997. Now she has a successful daytime talk show and has reclaimed not only her career, but has blazed a new path for people of the LGBT community who seek careers in the entertainment industry. She is an advocate for being true to oneself, and shows how beautiful honesty can be.

7. Rebel Wilson

gender-stereotypes-celebs-14

Actress and comedian Rebel Wilson knows the pressure on women in Hollywood to have skinny bodies, but she doesn’t let that get to her. Instead, she focuses on what her body can do, and how to take care of it.

8. Kristen Stewart

gender-stereotypes-celebs-06

Kristen Stewart has made it clear time and time again that she has never been much of a girly girl. So stepping out make-up free is the norm, and just look at how well she wears androgyny, hair short and tousled, a bare face, and rolled up sleeves.

The strangest part about being famous is you don’t get to give first impressions anymore. Everyone already has an impression of you before you meet them.”

9. Ellen Page

gender-stereotypes-celebs-07

At the Human Right’s Campaign inaugural Time To Thrive conference, Ellen Page memorably came out as a lesbian in a speech that grabbed headlines across the country. After calling E! News out for calling her gym style that of a “massive man,” Ellen articulated the suffocating burden of sexism and stereotypes in the mainstream media flawlessly.

There are pervasive stereotypes about masculinity and femininity that define how we’re all supposed to act, dress, and speak, and they serve no one. Anyone who defies these so called norms becomes worthy of comment and scrutiny, and the LGBT community knows this all too well.”

10. Mindy Kaling

gender-stereotypes-celebs-13

Writer, actress, producer, and all-around-amazing entertainer Mindy Kaling set the record straight about how some people in the media address her appearance. She’s not white or rail thin, yet she’s comfortable in her own skin, and is proud of the way she looks, regardless of how it compares to mainstream standards. Now THAT is real beauty.

11. Melissa McCarthy

gender-stereotypes-celebs-11

Comic powerhouse Melissa McCarthy has been the subject of harsh criticism regarding her weight, but she rarely acknowledges any of it. By opting out of a discussion about her weight, she’s creating a better world for her daughters as she explains on Anderson Cooper.

I want them to be confident, strong, healthy, happy women. And I want them to define themselves by their actions…and by how they treat other people…and I know everyone else is going to get all caught up in it, but my job is to always bring it back to what do you do, and how do you live, and what do you say to other people.”

12. Laverne Cox

gender-stereotypes-celebs-12

Laverne Cox, an actress on the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, is the first transgender woman of colour to play such a role on a scripted television show. She’s also an activist for the transgender community. During her interview with Katie Couric, she was asked about her genitalia. Instead of getting mad about such an invasive question, she answered with authority and grace about what is truly happening when she’s asked such things:

The preoccupation with transition and with surgery objectifies trans people and then we don’t get to really deal with the real lived experiences. The reality of trans people’s lives is that so often we’re targets of violence and discrimination disproportionately to the rest of the community.”

13. Miley Cyrus

gender-stereotypes-celebs-10

With the help of famous photographer Terry Richardson, Miley Cyrus set fire to the cute and innocent image of Hannah Montana back in 2013 with the iconic topless photo shoot. Since then, Cyrus has continued to test the limits. In recent months, the Grammy nominee has been vocal with her support for LGBT homeless youth and showed her disgust for the rich and powerful.

The two have been linked to each other’s Instagram feeds, so it’s not hard to imagine them being close in some way.

Miley has previously been linked to Patrick Schwarzenegger and Liam Hemsworth. However, although she says she has had relationships with women, she has chosen to keep those private.

She said:

As far as Stella and Miley (might we suggest “Stiley” if this sticks?), the two have reportedly been spending time together since Miley split from Schwarzenegger in March. Both gals have made numerous appearances on each other’s Instagram pages over the past few months.

Miley apparently met the 24-year-old runway bombshell through her friend/assistant Cheyne Thomas.

Miley Cyrus Discusses the Dynamics of Dating Men and Women

Miley Cyrus has once again opened up about on her sexuality and the experiences she’s shared when dating both men and women.

The former Hannah Montana recently did a interview with Time magazine, where she talked about her past relationships with both men and women, Instagram insecurities and her new role as an advocate for people across the gender spectrum.

In the interview, Cyrus discusses having a future that could involve a husband or wife or perhaps being a single mom by choice.

She’s also reflecting on how dissatisfied she felt in past romances, especially with the expectations for how men and women are supposed to act.

That made me feel like I had to be a femme-bot, which I’m not. And then when I was with a girl, I felt like, ‘Oh s–t, she’s going to need someone to protect her, so I’m going to need to have this macho energy.’ And that didn’t feel right either.”

As for what she’s looking for in a partner, Cyrus revealed it was about more than sex.

Miley-Cyrus-01

F–king is easy. You can find someone to f–k in five seconds. We want to find someone we can talk to. And be ourselves with. That’s fairly slim pickings.”

Cyrus’ former relationships include an engagement to Liam Hemsworth and a short-lived fling with Patrick Schwarzenegger. However, any future male suitors will have to get their act together before asking her out.

If I end up in a straight relationship, that’s fine. But I’m not going to be with f–king slob guys who are watching porn, making all their girls feel ugly.”

In addition to addressing her sexuality, Cyrus also revealed why she’s been so hell-bent on losing her Disney star persona.

Cyrus adds that she’s devoted to efforts, like her #InstaPride campaign, that make those in the LGBT community more comfortable with who they are.

Maybe if you’re finally getting to be yourself, it’s more of a celebration. Like, you are living your f–king life.”

Cyrus wrote on Instagram, accompanying a photo of smiley-faced balloons — a design that has become Miley’s logo lately.

I’m launching #InstaPride today, in partnership with @Instagram, to share stories of transgender and gender expansive people from around the country. Over the next 2 weeks, you’ll meet them and the people in their lives who support them, as we highlight their stories of resilience.”

Her Happy Hippie Foundation, an organisation that offers services to homeless and LGBT youth, also supports the effort. Miley, who has been vocal about her own gender fluidity recently, invited different people around the country to take part in the project. The first story revealed on the #InstaPride hashtag is of Leo Sheng, a transgender man who has been transitioning for the past year and a half.

For the past year and a half, my Instagram photos have been about my transition-filled life — graduating high school, starting college, making new connections. But the most obvious theme has been my transition from female to male. For me, a picture really does say a thousand words.”

Miley Cyrus Says She Identified as Bisexual While Filming ‘Hannah Montana’, But had to Keep Relationships with Women Private

Miley Cyrus has opened up about her sexuality and gender identity, revealing she told her mother Tish Cyrus she was bisexual at age 14.

Cyrus has always made it clear that she’s very comfortable with her sexuality, but for the first time she’s revealing that she realised at just 14 years old that she was bisexual.

In a new interview with Paper magazine, Cyrus reveals that she realised she was sexually attracted to girls as well as boys when she was still filming her hit television series, Hannah Montana.

She added she considers her sexuality and gender identity as fluid, saying she doesn’t ‘relate to being a boy or girl’ and doesn’t need her partner to relate to being a boy or girl either.

I remember telling [my mom] I admire women in a different way. And she asked me what that meant. And I said, I love them. I love them like I love boys. And it was so hard for her to understand. She didn’t want me to be judged and she didn’t want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has.”

Cyrus also opened up about her sex life, revealing

I am literally open to every single thing that’s consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age.

Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult – anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.’

Although Cyrus had opened up to her mom, she was still just 14 years old and the star of Disney’s Hannah Montana — so sharing the news publicly was not an option.

Interestingly enough, Miley also told the magazine that she’s had some very serious relationships with women that were never made public.

People never really looked at it, and I never brought it into the spotlight.”

Cyrus launched the Happy Hippie Foundation, a non-profit organisation aiming to raise awareness for issues facing homeless and LGBTI youth.

In particular, she aims to help young people who have run away from, or been rejected by their families.

What Does it Mean to be Gender Fluid?

For many people, the terms ‘gender’ is interchangeably. Both Miley Cyrus and Ruby Rose have spoken publicly how they about identifying as gender fluid. But what exactly is it and is it on the rise? If you’re not familiar with the term, gender fluidity refers to somebody viewing themselves as both male and female.

Some gender fluid people will alter their clothing depending on whether they feel more masculine or feminine while for others it’s a state of mind that they don’t outwardly express.

While you might have put Miley’s transition from girlie Hannah Montana to her current androgynous style down to fashion preference, but the child star has announced she doesn’t want to be boxed into one gender identity.

She recently told Out.

I didn’t want to be a boy … I kind of wanted to be nothing. I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box that I get put into.”

Meanwhile, Ruby Rose, soon to be star of Orange Is The New Black, shared a rare insight into being gender fluid in her short film Break Free, where she transitioned from an ultra feminine version of herself with long blonde hair to a masculine version in a suit.

The only reason it was a surprise was because gender fluidity doesn’t get talked about enough. Once the film went viral, the floodgate opened; to me, that said that this was something much bigger than I thought it was.”

Gender is all around us. It is actually taught to us from the moment we are born. Gender expectations and messages bombard us constantly. Upbringing, culture, peers, schools, community, media, and religion are some of the many influences that shape our understanding of this core aspect of self. How you learned and interacted with gender as a young child directly influences how you view the world today.

However, the diversity of gender is a normal part of the human experience, across cultures and throughout history.

Non-binary gender diversity exists all over the world, documented by countless historians and anthropologists. Examples of individuals living comfortably outside of typical male/female expectations and/or identities are found in every region of the globe.

The calabai, and calalai of Indonesia, two-spirit Native Americans, and the hijra of India all represent more complex understandings of gender than allowed for by a simplistic binary model.

Further, what might be considered gender-expansive in one period of history may become gender normative in another.

One need only examine trends related to men wearing earrings or women sporting tattoos to quickly see the malleability of social expectations about gender. Even the seemingly intractable “pink is for girls, blue is for boys” notions are relatively new. While there is some debate about the reasons why they reversed, what is well documented is that not until the mid-twentieth century were notions of pink for girls or blue for boys so firmly ensconced.

So, you can make the case that “pink is the new blue!”

Perhaps the most fundamental aspect of a person’s identity, gender deeply influences every part of their life.

In a society where this crucial aspect of self has been so narrowly defined and rigidly enforced, individuals who exists outside its norms face innumerable challenges.

Even those who vary only slightly from the norm can become targets of disapproval. Yet this does not have to be the case forever. Through a thoughtful consideration of the uniqueness and validity of every person’s experiences of self, we can develop greater acceptance for all.

Not only will this create greater inclusion for individuals who challenge the norms of gender, it will actually create space for all individuals to more fully explore and celebrate who they are.

Why are so Many Female Celebrities Opting to Not Label Themselves Bisexual?

Last week, when launching her Happy Hippie Foundation campaign to help homeless LGBT youth, Miley Cyrus told the Associated Press that not all her relationships have been “straight or heterosexual”, but no B word in play.

Raven-Symoné is also another women who does not want to be labelled. When asked by Oprah if was gay, Raven gave a very careful answer. “I don’t want to be labelled ‘gay,'” Raven says. “I want to be labelled ‘a human who loves humans.'”

Then there is also Gillian Anderson who also came out as having had a relationship with another woman after the death of an ex-lover. She told the Times newspaper she that she is “aware of the need for being open about fluid sexuality” but has not yet called herself bisexual.

The Oscar-nominated Maria Bello came out in a New York Times op-ed she titled Coming Out as a Modern Family. She openly wrote about falling in love and beginning a relationship with her best female friend, but refrained from using the ‘B’ word and instead called herself a, “whatever.”

Later she told the Huffington Post,

Things shift and change and it’s fluid, and I think the younger generation is knowing that more and [is] excited about it. It’s not static — life just isn’t — and we have to create better labels to embrace the beauty of who we are.”

In 2014 the ex-Spice Girl, Mel B, told the Guardian newspaper:

People call me lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, but I know who’s in my bed and that’s it. I have a huge libido and a great sex life… Well, I did have a four-year relationship with a woman. But I’ve been very happily married for seven years to a penis. Ha ha! An amazing guy.”

So why are so many women opting to call themselves Bisexual? Is it that they are simply pansexual, and not limiting their sexual choice to biological sex, gender, or gender identity? Or is it that labels are simply too oppressive?

I am from a generation where stating who I am and who I am dating was about pride. I am proud to call myself a gay woman – a lesbian. And my friends will equally address themselves as such – be it bisexual, queer or gay.

So why the uncomfortable shift to not label? We have seen many celebrities be burnt with announcing they’re bisexual, but ending up with a man – Jessie J managed to cause so much offence when she stated she was no longer bisexual.

The Sex and the City star, Cynthia Nixon, once told the Daily Beast…

I don’t pull out the ‘bisexual’ word because nobody likes the bisexuals. Everybody likes to dump on the bisexuals.”

Then there are others who champion their bisexuality. Anna Paquin went to town on Larry King when questioned her about her sexuality during an interview.

“Are you a non-practicing bisexual,” King asked her.

“Well, I am married to my husband [Stephen Moyer], and we are happily monogamously married,” she replied.

“But you were bisexual?” King asked.

“Well, I don’t think it’s a past tense thing,” she continued. “Are you still straight if you are with somebody?

“If you were to break up with them or if they were to die, it doesn’t prevent your sexuality from existing. It doesn’t really work like that.”

So does refusing to adopt the bisexual label contributed further to bi invisibility?

No stranger to the label debate is Australian actress and founder of feminist website herself.com, Caitlin Stasey. When interviewed last year, she stated she recently decided to steer clear of labelling her sexuality.

Because if I say I’m bisexual, people say it doesn’t exist, and if I say I’m gay, people say I’m belittling the plight of all other women who consider themselves gay. I found a word that I identified with, I was told I couldn’t have it, and now I just think fuck it. I’m attracted to whom I’m attracted to.”

Some of us live in a countries where same-sex relationships are still not legally recognised – where being a part of the LGBT community is still considered “other”.

So in one sense the coverage is good – it sparks conversations that hopefully help people realise sexuality lies on a spectrum, and where you fall is your place to label if you feel the need to do so.

Maybe one day bisexuality will be the norm. Or perhaps we’re slowly but surely entering an age, led by the politically correct Tumblr generation, in which we recognise, accept, and are no longer fearful of sexuality.

And beyond the labelling? Maybe one day we’ll wake to the news of a famous actress admitting she’s had relationships with many people, no mention of gender.
