My Favourite Picks From Kitsch Kandy’s Summer Sale

I don’t usually get too excited about big sales (especially lately while I’m saving for my next big holiday, and making an effort to be especially frugal).

But when Kitsch Kandy has their summer sale, you just don’t ignore it. clothes

Kitsch Kandy is a web store that aims to cater for those whose style and personality does not conform to the traditional thoughts of society – women and femininity, males and masculinity.

They offer both home furnishings and fashion items that are aimed perfectly at lesbians and others in “marginalized” groups. While these gift items don’t scream “super gay”, they are designed to make you feel more comfortable in your own skin – whatever that means for you.

From jackets to underwear and T-Shirts to jeans and home goods, there are plenty of new items available at hugely discounted prices.

clothesWhen the sale event comes to an end, all items return to their regular prices. So these aren’t end-of-season or overstock items they’re trying to get rid of. They are brand new items on sale for a very limited time.

Plus they’re also offering a HUGE 20% extra off this week, which includes sale items too. Just use the promo code EXTRA20

It is, by far and away, the best time to snag new goodies at majorly discounted prices. And because I adore this sale oh so much, I decided to share it with all of you.

The items you see above are the ones I am specifically eyeing. Some are way out of my price range, but hey, I can still look at them, right?

I’m going to treat myself to a couple of the more realistically price items, although I’m still not able to completely narrow it down. I need to get on it though – I don’t want to miss out.

Who else is taking advantage of the best sale of the year? Any other Kitsch Kandy fans in the house?

14 Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas For You And Your Girl

Valentine’s Day is a special time of year. Whether you think it’s the day when you’re supposed to celebrate the fullest extent of your love or you think it’s a day for companies to mark up the price on “romantic crap” they sell all year anyway, it’s generally accepted that you’re supposed to buy your partner something for the occasion.

Most people go with flowers, chocolate, and jewelry, but we know your girlfriend is more special than that. No – she deserves something spectacularly different, right? Well, lucky you – this is one of the reasons Kitsch Kandy was created!

But the “perfect gift” for your girlfriend is going to depend on what message you want to send her. (And obviously you do have a message, since you didn’t want to get her the same thing every ex of hers has, right?)

So… What are you trying to say?

“You light up my life.”

l-e-d-circus-lights-love-p97-491_zoom

I strongly believe in the power of good lighting. Whether you’re trying to set the mood or just trying to see your books better, light is super important and we usually take advantage of it.

In the same way, we often take for granted the women who make our lives better. She does so much for you, and you just sort of figure she’s always going to. But if you don’t show her that you appreciate the things she does, she might not stick around that long!

‘Crazy In Love’ Heart Shaped Light Box

Sometimes, the best way to show her how you feel is quite literally. If you want to bring brightness to her world and also tell her how much she means to you, the Crazy In Love light box is a great choice. Available in pink and grey to suit any taste, this light is small and can be powered with the included cord or with AA batteries (not included).

‘Love’ Vegas Lights

There’s something cozy and charming about these Vegas lights – and if your girlfriend is also cozy and charming, you’ll be able to show her exactly how you feel, in a way that complements her décor! Our Love Vegas Lights come in multiple color variations to match whatever style she has in her home. Just like our other light boxes, these can be powered with the included cord or AA batteries (not included). Consider getting the matching Love Heart Vegas Light to make sure the message is heard loud and clear.

“You’ve helped me grow.”

63519_Bloomingville_Urtepotte__Bloom_and_grow__1

If your partner has influenced you to be a better person, whether directly or indirectly, it can be an empowering feeling. Sometimes we don’t know how much better our lives could be until someone comes along and inspires us to make it happen.

Then, one day, someone will show us how much we are capable of. Chances are, she wasn’t doing it for the recognition, and maybe she didn’t even do it on purpose. But isn’t that all the more reason to let her know how much it means to you?

‘Happiness Is A Form Of Courage’ Flowerpot

Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the woman who lifts others the most might not be able to lift herself up. Remind her that she has the right to be happy, too – and that beautiful things happen when she smiles. The Happiness is a Form of Courage flower pot offers a reason for her to be happy. Pro tip: it’s actually scientifically proven that keeping living plants inside the home or office is better for your health, focus, and overall sense of peace.

“You bring me peace.”

HomeBanner_03

Everyone wants to be with someone who makes them feel safe, calm, and relaxed. Maybe we don’t want peace and tranquility all the time (hey, angry sex is pretty nice sometimes), but there are going to be times when you just want to relax and smile. If your girlfriend brings you that sense of peace, you should try to give it to her, too.

One of the simplest ways to do this is to give her a good massage. I know I’m especially guilty of taking every massage thrown my way and forgetting to return the favor. (Although, I’ll never say no if she asks for one.) Just in case massages aren’t really your thing, or you’re looking for something to go along with the massage, we’ve got a few items that might help.

Bath Bombs and Fizzes

If your girlfriend likes taking baths, even occasionally, bath bombs are a luxurious way to help her relax and release the stress within. Whether you choose the sensual rose & petals, the soothing lavender heart, the simple chamomile & honey heart, or the warm rose, lavender, and patchouli cake, melting one of these fizzes in her bath is sure to melt her heart, too. Try giving her a combination – we have many more varieties available, as well!

Herbal Soaps

Some women shy away from giving soaps and perfumes as a gift, because it might send the message that you think your partner smells. However, most women I know would love to know that they smell irresistible to their partner. Go with an herbal soap, as they often have added aromatherapy benefits, aside from the marvelous scents and skin-softening qualities. If you want one with a particularly romantic touch, this handmade soap also has flower petals in it – lovely!

“You keep me on track.”
290f1680fa51477f1198def0bb7177cf

Every now and then, things come up that might make us fall out of sync with what we need to be doing. If your girlfriend helps keep you motivated, so that you keep reaching for your goals, she’s extra special – and she deserves to be treated as such.

One of the simplest ways to thank a woman for keeping you moving forward is to help her take a little time off. If you can help her out with household errands, or even just make a simple grocery run, chances are, it’ll be greatly appreciated. If all you can offer is moral support, then don’t skimp on that!

A Clock

Okay, maybe clocks aren’t the most common gift – but that’s part of what makes them charming and romantic. Chances are, she’s got a place to put a beautiful clock. Maybe she’d like the George Nelson ‘Sunburst’ Clock in her dining room, the Newgate Bubble Desk Clock in her study, and the Pastel Rainbow Retro Ball Clock in her bathroom. I think our society is largely relying too much on our cell phones for everything – and the gift of a clock gives her freedom from one of the tethers of the technological age. (All of our clocks are battery powered, and there are more options available in our Home Living section.)

“I’m comfortable with you.”

bloomingville-quilted-round-cushion-rose-melange-2

Sometimes, we take comfort for granted. This can be particularly true if you and your partner are especially comfortable together – after a while, we let our mind tell us we’re bored. But we don’t think comfort needs to be a bad thing. In fact, I’m betting there have been a few times when your relationship thrived on the comfort you shared – so show her that you’re absolutely comfortable with her, and that’s a good thing.

Of course, one of my favorite non-material ways to show my partner I’m comfortable with her is by cuddling in the nude. The skin-to-skin contact stimulates the brain’s production of oxytocin, which allows the two of you to bond and develop a greater intimacy. (Plus, who doesn’t enjoy seeing their partner in the nude?)

A Sweatshirt

If you want a more material way to show her you’re comfortable with her, a sweatshirt can be a great way to keep her cozy. It might seem like it goes against the idea of being naked around each other, but the fact of the matter is – you can’t always run around in the nude. Sometimes, you actually have to go outside. Consider The Kiss sweatshirt to let her wear your kisses all over town (even when you’re apart). This Beautiful Sweatshirt may be a good choice if you want to let her know she’s gorgeous, too. If she needs a gentle reminder to comfort herself, too, the Good Vibes Sweatshirt is cozy and warm, which is sure to promote good vibes from within.

‘Make Magic Happen’ Tee

Sweatshirts are great, but sometimes your girlfriend can’t wear them all year long, right? Well, to cover the rest of the year, we recommend this cozy tee that lets her know she’s magical to you.

A Cushion

I’m not sure about you, but my girlfriend likes to nap. (She’s actually napping right now, as it happens.) While she’d probably rather use me as a pillow, many women enjoy cushions and pillows for a variety of reasons. We think it’s best to choose one that complements her style and offers a comfortable place to lay your head. Whether she’s interested in our Trichord Cushion, Camellia’s Cushion here, or maybe one with cute animals, we offer a wide variety to suit any taste. (My personal favorite right now is this mint bird pillow… Absolutely adorable!)

So, which is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

Introducing Kitsch Kandy; Home Décor And Tomboy Fashion

Kitsch Mix has been a part of your family for 18 months now, and in that time we’ve noticed a lot.

2 years ago, we formed to fill a big gaping hole in the LGBT community – that lack of real lesbian visibility in media. So often we compete in a very male dominated LGBT market. We share that space, but we seldom own it.

We looked to change this, and for the last year our ever-growing team has worked hard to re-shape this landscape and offer you something new.

As an independent brand, owned and run by women, we are looking to build a community that other women can benefit from, and feel part of. We’ve done this through this website, and our TV channel, but now we’re moving into a new arena: Fashion.

Enter Kitsch Kandy, a web store that aims to cater for those whose style and personality does not conform to the traditional thoughts of society – women and femininity, males and masculinity.

Stocksy_txp242f0ebbrEn000_Small_831482

We offer both home furnishings and fashion items that are aimed perfectly at lesbians and others in “marginalized” groups. While these gift items don’t scream “super gay”, they are designed to make you feel more comfortable in your own skin – whatever that means for you.

We believe that style and fashion are not always the same – and if we had to choose, we’d pick style every time. We believe that your personal style should be a reflection of your inner self, as opposed to covering it up. And we believe that a designer doesn’t have to be well-known to be wonderful.

12341535_885265014861276_3308903689263380335_n

That’s why, each month, we’ll hand-select a designer that caters to our community – offering you options that don’t feel like settling. We strive to turn your shopping trip into an all-out experience – something you’ll look forward to and tell all your friends about.

We want to help you write your own story – one that doesn’t conform to society’s rules of what you should or shouldn’t dress like.

You already know that Kitsch Mix is all about you. We opened our store with our readers in mind, and we look to improve it based on what you think – so share your opinions!

After all, this is for all of us.

Even though this store is still very new, there is a great selection of fun, classy gift ideas for the people who mean the most in your life (even if that’s yourself – as it should be!), and support from the community will help it to grow even further.

So spread the word to all the lesbians you know – Kitsch Kandy is here to stay!

‘Be Yourself At Prom’ Campaign Aims To Give Teens A Chance To Express Their Gender However They Want

Designers Sharpe Suiting and NiK Kacy are encouraging high school students to share their views on why gender expression is important – as well as their ideas for a dream prom outfit – in a short video clip.

56a7acb32a00002c0003149a

One winner will be chosen to receive a complete prom outfit, designed to their specifications.

The competition, known as the ‘Love Fellowship’, is named after Louisiana teen Claudetteia Love, who in 2015 fought for her right to wear a tuxedo to prom.

PROM_640x345_acf_cropped

Initally, she was barred from attending in ‘masculine’ attire, and planned to boycott the prom until her school changed their minds following a media backlash.

The Love Prom website explains;

The Love Fellowship celebrates the inclusion of all gender expressions. Historically prom, an important right of passage for high school teens, has upheld rigid gendered expectations.

In support of all the teens challenging gender norms, the Love Fellowship annually chooses one teen to receive a complete prom outfit tailor made to match their gender identity.’

Sharpe-Suiting-13

Speaking to the Huffington Post, Wu said:

Hand delivering that custom Sharpe burgundy tux and matching shoes provided by NiK Kacy to Love’s house and seeing her face when she tried her prom outfit on for the first time was one of the highlights of my career so far, and it reminded me, yet again, of why I founded Sharpe in the first place.’

High school is a time in a person’s life when they start exploring who they are going to be and how they are going to express themselves.

How are they seen in the world? Will the world accept them for who they are?… Forcing youth to conform to rigid male-female gender expressions that don’t accurately reflect their identities nullifies this celebration.”

Sharpe-Suiting-03

Adding:

We should be striving to nurture individuality and creativity, and understand that each expression of self is valid.’

A winner will be chosen after February 15th.

Jaden Smith Is The New Face Of Louis Vuitton’s SS16 Womenswear Campaign

Will and Jada’s 17-year-old heir has just been announced as the newest face of the fashion house’s Spring/Summer 2016 campaign.

e6d5f00231f8ad7ca2e9ac4411fe522c6ddb1da2

In an Instagram post by the brand’s artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière, a shoot (snapped by photographer Bruce Weber) features Jaden Smith in pieces from Louis Vuitton’s women’s collection, debuted at Paris Fashion Week.

Smith’s barrier-breaking clothing styles have been buzzed about since he was first seen rocking a dress back in April.

He has since worn a dress to prom, as well as a Batman costume to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding. In an interview with GQ, Smith discussed the motivations behind his fashion choices, marking them as a form of expression.

“I’m just expressing how I feel inside, which is really no particular way because everyday it changes how I feel about the world and myself, but I like wearing super drapey things so I can feel as though I’m a super hero, but don’t have to necessarily wear super hero costumes everyday,”

Peep the photos from Jaden’s upcoming Louis Vuitton campaign below:

Queer Fashion | The Shoeholic

Queer Fashion | Shoeholic – Updating your shoe closet this season? Before you head out to the mall on a shopping spree, check out our favourite footwear trends.

From trainers to heels, we’ve got you covered.

Skater Shoes

There were a lot of 90s inspired footwear this season, and the biggest indication of the 90s shoe invasion is the comeback of the skate shoe. Not straying far from its original silhouette, these sporty slip-ons, which are high on street cred, have gained high fashion cred as well. Givenchy, Lanvin, and Miu Miu, each have their own decked out version of this footwear trend. No need to shell out big bucks to be on trend. High street footwear brands like Steve Madden, Topshop, and Aldo have their own take on this trend. Typically playing on texture these comfy slip-ons comes in various prints and textiles like leopard print, snakeskin, pony hair, and floral print.

The Buck

Before you buy any other shoe, get yourself some Buck. It looks timeless. Its versatility is endless – whether plain toe or wing tip. Yes, this season is all about the suede Buck, because when it comes to shoes to wear with a smart-casual outfit they play the perfect part. So, if you’re going on a date, or you just want to look better than a t-shirt and jeans reach for the Buck.

Birkenstocks

Often thought as ‘staple dyke’ footwear, bloggers and editors from all over started jumping on the bandwagon of yet another 90s trend – Birkenstocks. Can we say hallelujah? Our feet could use some TLC from the cushioned soles and ergonomic design of these sandals. One rule remains, do not wear these with white socks.

Pointed Toe Flats

This season is all about flats. Pointed toe flats should be your staple this summer. You can update from the normal slip on style by choosing a pair with ankle strap detail or with a laser cut leather material. The hottest trend within this trend is the pointed D’orsay flat, feminine and flattering; this is definitely the must-have shoe of the summer.

According To New Study Wearing Black Actually Makes Apear Look More Confident

Just how much consideration do you give to the colour of your clothes?

For as long as we’ve worn cloth to cover our bodies, black clothes have been associated with dreary times and dark occasions.

black-is-happy-colur

That assumption may actually be wrong, though, as a recent study done on 1,000 people by shirt retailer Buy T-Shirts Online shows black clothes may actually inspire confidence within the wearers.

In a study on how different colours are perceived, 56% of people asked said they thought black was a “[colour] of confidence.”

black-clothes-01

This means wearing black on something like a first date or job interview may be the best option to increase your chances for success.

Throughout all our survey, black came first or second in most “good” traits (for example confidence, intelligence and sexiness) and barely figured in the “bad” traits (arrogance). It wasn’t a particularly good performer in the “generosity” scale, however, coming second to last after brown, but it’s hard to imagine is being any other way. Try getting your kid to sit on the knee of a black-clad Santa.

Benevolent nocturnal visitations aside, black is the colour to wear when you’re trying to impress, reassure or woo. There’s a certain trustworthiness about it on a person that would make you hand over your life savings and thank them for the privilege.

On the reverse side of all this, the study clearly showed you should never wear orange or brown to events where you need to be confident; only 4% of people thought it was fine to consider donning orange to a first date, and only 5% of people asked, overall, believed it was OK to wear brown.

Other findings in the study point to how red is considered the most arrogant colour, while pink is looked upon as the least intelligent one.

Before you go and chuck your whole wardrobe, let me just reemphasise this study was done by a t-shirt company with the least original name for a t-shirt company of all time.

Queer Fashion Week is a Brilliant, Diverse Alternative Fashion Event

When we look at the models who walk the runways at New York, London, Paris and Milan’s fashion weeks, we very rarely see faces and bodies that look like ours. Not only are these models chosen for the job because of their ethereal beauty (beauty that is said to be far superior to that of the common person) but they are rarely at or above the average weight and they don’t represent an ethnically diverse population either.

In fact, in Jezebel’s annual survey of the fashion industry, 78.69% of the models who walked in 2014 were white. Just 9.75% of models were black, 7.67% were Asian, 2.12% were Latina and the stats are even worse for models of other, non-white ethnic backgrounds as just 0.45% were called up to the runway ranks.

The same Jezebel report also suggested that the tide is turning and that indeed, more designers and those in the fashion industry are talking about diversity and how they can improve the numbers – but clearly, this is not enough. For the millions of non-white, not-skinny, not-so ‘traditionally beautiful’ faces around the globe, we need a solution now. We need queer fashion week.

Queer fashion week (QFW) took place last month in Oakland, California. Between April 16-19, over 25 queer-owned brands showed off their wares including: Haute Butch, Size Queen Clothing; Immigreat Designs, Sun Sun, Qwear Fashion and the brilliantly named Lady Lovers. QFW drew in over 1,000 attendees, which is impressive considering that fashion weeks are mostly done with and this is an event that’s happening outside of the usual industry sphere.

One of the core principles of the event was to get queer clothing in front of queer bodies but it was also about using queer fashion to power the conversation forward. For example; some fashion houses have used androgynous models or have clothed models in gender neutral clothing but when they are backed up racist hiring practices leading to a lack of diversity (even andro models are often white) there are clearly systemic issues there that need to be addressed, discussed and picked apart. QFW hopes to do this, boosting a discussions about intersectionality, racism, the gender binary, gender norms, classism and other topics that the LGBTQ+ community holds near and dear.

For those who were unable to attend Queer Fashion Week in 2015, the organised have already announced dates for next year – QF2 2016 takes place between April 14-17.

Erika Linder: “I Don’t Want to be Labeled”

Former soccer player and self-described tomboy from Sweden, Erika Linder is famed for showcasing her androgyny in campaigns for Tom Ford, a Vogue Italia spread, and even a Katy Perry music video.

Erika-Linder-tom-ford-01

In fact, her first-ever photo shoot, she posed — convincingly — as a young Leonardo DiCaprio circa his Nineties film “The Basketball Diaries.” It was a gig that marked the start of a versatile career path.

Erika Linder 03

Speaking with wwd.com the model recalled that period of time

Yeah. And back then, it wasn’t really happening as much. No one was really out there doing that. This guy hit me up who runs Candy magazine — Terry Richardson and Bruce Weber had shot for it — they shoot boys like girls and vice versa. This guy said, “I want to shoot you as young Leonardo DiCaprio from ‘The Basketball Diaries.’” The agency was like, “No, no, no.” They were weirded out about it. And I said, “But I would do that even if I wasn’t a model!” So I ended up doing it anyway. It was my first photo shoot.”

Back then she was 21, now she is 24-year-old and Los Angeles-based model, who lives with her girlfriend and their dog Butters.

erika-Linder-05

I’m not out there saying, ‘I’m a guy,’ I don’t want to be labeled. At the end of the day, I’m a girl. I don’t want to have a sex change. I don’t want to only model the men’s stuff. I’m just good at doing both.”

In addition to modeling, Linder, who at times bears a subtle resemblance to model Daria Werbowy and at others the late River Phoenix, also acts, plays music and recently launched a namesake unisex apparel line.

I had wanted to launch a unisex line for like a year. My friend in L.A. was like, “I’ll run the business and you will be the face of it.” We came up with a few things like hoodies, beanies, snapbacks, baseball shirts — very plain stuff. I’m having fun with it. Things are still in production, but people have been ordering it from Australia, Hong Kong and Sweden.”

But she is not limited to just fashion, Linder has her eyes set on other things.

I wanna do movies, I wanna do music when I’m not shy about it….I love outdoor stuff. I want to go to Yellowstone. But for me, at the end of this whole crazy thing, I just want to get a house in Sweden somewhere in the countryside with my dogs. That’s it.

Kristen Stewart Flaunts the Androgynous Look for Chanel Eyewear Campaign

The now androgynous beauty, Kristen Stewart, has spent plenty of time in front of the camera as the female lead, but for her latest campaign for Chanel, she stepped behind the lens.

kristen-stewart-chanel-eyewear-01

The 24-year-old Twilight Saga star has been signed up to model Chanel’s sunglasses and opticals range for spring/summer 2015, but for the shoot Stewart had a bit of a role reversal, facing off against Karl Lagerfeld with a camera.

In a statement, the French fashion house said the black and white images show the actress becoming ‘a charming photo-reporter, her gaze framed by the new optical eyewear and sunglasses’.

kristen-stewart-chanel-eyewear-02 kristen-stewart-chanel-eyewear-03

What we see, is that she can work a variety of frame shapes, from aviator to square frames.

On Chanel’s website, you’ll find more photos, and you can watch Kristen work all of the styles in a behind-the-scenes video.

The Perfect Fit: An Interview with Vanessa Craig of Sharpe Suiting

Tom Sykes: Sharpe Suiting makes customised apparel for the LGBTQ community. What sorts of clothing do LGBTQ people ask you to make?

Vanessa Craig: We specialise in LGBTQ clients because they have a hard time finding a good fit whether they’re buying off the rack or going to a standard tailor. A typical tailor doesn’t understand that butch women usually want a more masculine fit and he’ll make the clothes curvy and design them to more closely fit to the body. Sharpe Suiting does understand masculine tastes!

TS: How did you start up?

VC: My business partner, Leon Wu, is a trans guy and we had been talking about the idea of a masculine clothes line for a long time. A couple of businesses in San Francisco had started to offer these products and I thought, ‘Yeah we might be onto something here.’ It made sense because my background is in fashion, I went to fashion school and I’ve always loved suits. So Leon became the business guy and I the marketing/promotions person. We then found an awesome Ukrainian tailor, Oksana Putyatina, who had been working in menswear for 25 years. She really understands both menswear and womenswear and works with our clients to get the ideal tailored fit for them.

TS: Your website talks about your products being ‘inspired by social context’? Could you tell us a little bit more about that?

VC: When you look at the history of queer clothing, it’s always been hard for people like myself who do not identify with her assigned gender role. So if you identify as butch, even now there’s no big department store selling the clothes I want. With Sharpe Suiting we’re trying to meet that demand.

TS: You recently raised $69,000 using Kickstarter. How was the experience?

VC: I didn’t sleep in maybe two months because of the workload! I never realised how much effort fundraising is. We did great and went from $50,000 to $69,000 in just the last 7 days. Our final fundraising event was in Los Angeles on November 12th and it involved a model search, an auction and a trivia quiz night. Kickstarter is kinda like a baby; you have to give it constant attention.

TS: How do you plan to use the funding?

VC: Right now all we do is custom suiting and that’s a very personalised and finely-tuned service. We want to branch out into ready-to-wear so that people can buy our products online as well as in shops. What we’re hoping for with this expansion is that the straight shops will start carrying these more androgynous clothes that we make. We want a situation where anyone, wherever they are in the world, can get the suit they want.

TS: You have some high-profile lesbian clients and I wondered if you could talk a little bit about working with them.

VC: It’s always good to have a spokesperson for your brand who is part of your community and that your specific clientele can relate to. Our models are diverse: trans, butch, femme, every gender, every ethnicity. We try to incorporate them all into our brand because we have friends belonging to each of those subcultures.

Our main model is Kelsey Grace from The Real L Word. She has such a good reputation and the perfect look for the clothes. There’s nothing polarised about her; she’s neither extremely butch nor extremely femme, but somewhere in the middle. This is why she catches everyone’s attention and promotes the suits to all the various markets.

TS: Did you approach her?

VC: Yes. I’m an event promoter in LA so I’d worked with Kelsey on an event before she signed with Sharpe Suiting. Like a lot of celebrities here, she’s actually real down to earth and surprisingly easy to get in touch with.

We approached her, took her measurements and then asked her what sort of suit would she like. What would she feel comfortable in? She said she was going to a wedding and, for once in her life, wanted to look good in a suit so that her family would appreciate it.

At these kinds of events sometimes families don’t like the idea of women wearing non-traditional clothing. For that reason it was important for Kelsey to have the suit fit perfectly. She picked out a blue double-breasted, we had it tailored for her and she felt confident in it. Our minds were blown minds when we saw how good she looked! We’re so grateful to her for being part of our brand.

Sharpe-Suiting-15 Sharpe-Suiting-12

TS: What’s the most interesting suit you’ve ever been asked to create?

VC: Recently someone wanted a Boardwalk Empire-style 1920s gangster pin stripe suit for their wedding. It was very flashy and gorgeous and she was so excited. For a woman there is no other way to buy an outfit like this unless you get it made through custom suiting.

Films That Inspire Our Wardrobe | Rebel Without A Cause

James Dean was the epitome of cool in “Rebel Without A Cause” with his Lee 101 Rider jeans, white tee, and work boots. The outfit made the look famous and became a staple in everyday butch wear.

Why we love it

James Dean’s immortal sense of style is easy to infuse into your wardrobe, and the truth is, you’re probably already halfway there. Everyone has a T-shirt and jeans – right? They just have to be cut right.

Dean’s look comes from an era when clothes fitted properly by hugging the body rather than hanging. The ‘Rebel Without A Cause’ style is about understanding denim, and understanding the simple side of fashion.

And why we really love him

James Dean is also credited with popularising the vest as part of his Texas oil tycoon role in the posthumously released film Giant. He also had his hands on dressier duds like the shawl collar dinner jacket that he is recognized for having resurrected. From the familiar to the formal, James Dean was a timeless trendsetter.

His legacy will far outlives his short time on Earth for one simple reason: He embodied the essence of cool. He was one of the first male actors who garnered as much attention from women as he did from men. And while James Dean’s sexual past remains shrouded in mystery to this day, one thing is clear: Everyone either wanted him or wanted to be like him.

1. Ari Fitz (@itsarifitz)

It’s like an unspoken trust – that i will give them something powerful, unique, and new … every time i create.”

Ari Fitz

2. Jana Knauer (@janaknauer)

When you start your career as a fashion model, you usually know what the industry likes about you most. It is either your agent who tells you right away, or you will learn on jobs… for me: eyebrows.”

Jana Knauer

3. Elliott Sailors (@Elliottsailors)

It was a natural transition earlier on in my career, I would get frustrated because I thought I looked too masculine. I have a strong jaw, wide forehead, huge eyebrows. I thought I looked like a man wearing make-up… One of my favorite things, actually, about working in menswear is that people are much more direct about what they want.”

Elliott Sailors

4. Beck Holladay (@mickeypancake)

…dressing like a boy and having the biggest hair”

Beck Holladay

5. Erika Linder (@richiephoenix)

The fashion world always changes. You can’t keep up and it’s not something I keep up with to be honest. I think it’s hard for androgynous models to really get known or get a good gig. This world in general is hard to get into and do well I reckon. It all depends on how far you wanna go. I just imagine that I wanna be the best that I can be…”

Erika Linder

6. Courtney McCullough (@courtneymccullough6)

I find utter enjoyment in travel planning and researching rather than leaving it up to a travel agent. In another life, I’d be THE perfect travel agent; just give me a budget and what you’re looking for and I’ll create the perfect trip for you.”

Courtney McCullough

7. Agathe Mougin (@agathemougin)

8. Agyness Deyn (@agynessdeyn)

When I started modeling, I didn’t have a fucking clue what I was doing. Actually, I still don’t know what I’m doing while modeling. But at the beginning, it was like, “Oh, god, is this right? Is it not?” So I’m kind of going through that again, but I think it’s a discovery, which is fun.”

Films That Inspire Our Wardrobe | The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Rooney Mara’s adaptation of Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” helped bring the character’s bad-ass attitude – punky looks mixed with a leather-heavy wardrobe – to a mainstream audience. H&M even partnered with the film’s costume designer, Trish Summerville to bring out a range to mark the launch.

Why we love it

The whole style has that gothy-vibe going-on. Its a wearable classic and chic-looking, with a black coat, printed vest, denim jacket with leather sleeves, complete with leather pants and studs.

Tilda Swinton: Suited Muse

Tilda Swinton has honed her own signature when it comes to fashion, and at KitschMix we simply can’t get enough. Her androgynous beauty allows her to play everything from a Caravaggio muse to winter snow Queens.

Her fashion choices (like her movie roles) tend to stray from the Hollywood norm. From menswear-inspired pieces, to strong architectural details; Swinton is always guaranteed to shy away from the mainstream and wear something unexpected.

There is a reason the actress and fashion muse has been touted as one of today’s most original and visionary dressers.

Here, we pick our favourite Swinton fashion moments.

The New Prince(ss) of Androgynous Style; Fashion Model, Erika Linder

Erika Linder is androgynous modelling royalty, cultivating a successful career by creating her own modelling category. Neither feminine, nor masculine.

The fashion world always changes. You can’t keep up and it’s not something I keep up with to be honest. I think it’s hard for androgynous models to really get known or get a good gig. This world in general is hard to get into and do well I reckon. It all depends on how far you wanna go. I just imagine that I wanna be the best that I can be…

I feel like you have to be to get somewhere. Not pretend to be anything that you’re not. It’s easier for me. The term of being consider as an androgynous model is not something I really care about like that, not something I think about but I love doing both. It’s fun and interesting. I love getting into character. I’d be bored just doing one of the two. I’m just having loads of fun with it.

I have has pretty much embraced everything I’ve done. To be honest I feel like one of the first photo shoots I’ve done as a young Leonardo DiCaprio for Candy magazine back in 2011 made a big difference. It was the shoot that made people realize that I could shoot as both genders. I have done so much in such little time, it’s crazy. Commercial stuff mixed with edgy work and everything goes hand in hand so every little thing counts.

That’s what’s so great about it. Everything just works well together by being completely different. I have some major stuff coming out still, campaigns, movies, music and designing so I’m looking forward to that.”

Queer Fashion: Doing Male Fashion the Butch Way

Queer Fashion | Doing Male Fashion Style the Butch Way – When it comes to looking good, in any type of clothing whether it’s a dress or a 3-piece suit, fit is everything.

Wearing male fashion and looking good doing it is all about fit. If you can afford to buy a custom-made suit, consider yourself lucky. That’s pretty much the pinnacle of dapper butch fashion. Buying a suit or men’s clothing off-the-rack can be tough, you never want to look like you just grabbed your dad’s suit right? A possible solution is to have that purchase altered to fit your body. Finding a good tailor you can always go to takes a lot of time, money, and resources on your part. But believe me, it’ll be well worth it. Remember that when it comes to looking good, in any type of clothing whether it’s a dress or a 3-piece suit, fit is everything.

Here are some quick tips on how to do butch wear in style:

  1. Avoid bulky cuts. Always aspire to look sleek.
  2. Personalize your menswear look. Whether it’s a pair of colourful socks or antique cuff links, these little details are what make your outfit stand out.
  3. Don’t write off the women’s wear department. There has been an influx of menswear-inspired pieces on the runway as of late. Take advantage of this and open your mind to the possibilities of tailoring that is more suited to your body.
  4. The same goes for shoes too, there are so many colour options in the women’s shoe department that you won’t see in men’s.

On that note, here are some stores that fit your needs to a T, and will provide stylish butch fashion that goes beyond traditional suiting.

KitschKandy – A real mix of fashion, homeware, and everything in between

Androgyny This store makes button down shirts in different fabrications that’ll fit your perfectly. The shirt length is just right, and the conspicuous darting in women’s shirt is absent from their designs.

Marimacho The most noteworthy section is their swimwear. The swim separates are utilitarian and athletic.

Wildfang For a sportier tomboy style, look no further than Wildfang’s T-shirt, hoodies, and cardigans.

Queer Fashion | Power Dressing

Queer Fashion | Power dressing in 2014 is all about tailoring and accessorising.

The term ‘power dressing’ or ‘power suits’ conjure up bad images of shoulder pads, oversized and unflattering blazers, and perms. Eww.

Power dressing in 2014 is a bit different. Women’s wear has long taken a turn toward tailoring, and it looks like tailoring is becoming just as important for women’s fashion as it had always been in menswear.

Of course, the number one power-dressing item is and will always be the suit. Pantsuits are now one of the hottest looks in fashion. What’s great about pantsuits is the infinite ways you can style it to make it your own. If you’re in a more creative field like advertising or new media, you can be more adventurous with your pantsuit style. Try wearing a mismatching pantsuit; say a royal blue tuxedo jacket with black high-waist wide leg trousers and an embellished belt.

If you’re in a more corporate work environment, there are various ways to dress up your pantsuit. Don’t limit yourself to all black. Experiment with an all grey pantsuit and add pops of colour via your pumps or a scarf.

As always, fit is important. You may have the right accessories but if you wear an ill-fitting pantsuit, it’s all-downhill from there.

Another important element to power dressing is shirting. Gone are the days when women wore shiny satin button-down shirts underneath their work blazers. Make sure that your button-down shirts are in flattering cuts that cinch at the waits and end right above the hipbone. A shirt that is too long makes you look unpolished.

Cuff and collar details are elements that you should watch out for when picking out work-appropriate blouses. You can even take a cue from menswear and add pocket squares and cuff links to your ensemble.

Although there are lots of style guides (including this one) out there for power dressing, keep in mind that power dressing’s end goal is to make you feel confident and make you look capable. Any item that you wear that doesn’t make you feel that isn’t worth the closet space.

Suits, Shirts and Ties | The KitschMix Fashion Round

Suits, Shirts and Ties | The KitschMix Fashion Round – This season add some tailoring to your wardrobe. A shirt and tie has become a staple for any urban lesbian.

Wear a white shirt and black dress pants with a nice fitted black jacket, then add a vibrant color tie and you will be sexy and in fashion this season.

Suits can be worn to work or out on the town. The important thing to remember is to be sure of the fit of the suit is correct. Take in wear needed and let out wear needed.

It is also important to have it pressed or ironed regularly. Wrinkles are not in fashion and can ruin a look of a suit, shirt or tie over time. Shirts come in a variety of colors and this is great, just remember that if you have a neon pink tie that a bright neon green shirt can clash.

Remember, the suit can be a sexy fashionable clothing item to have in your wardrobe but you need to wear it and not let it wear you. Wear it with confidence because confidence is sexy.

Ties are a great accessory that can be found in solids or prints. Printed ties need to be a little tame, such as a small stripe rather than a large stripe. Small stripe ties look best and can give a little bit of accent to just a solid color tie.

Have fun with ties and you will always have a great accessory to add to your wardrobe. But remember, it is important to know how to tie a tie correctly, so practice

Tom Ford  is planning to celebrate female beauty in his latest advertising campaign. The designer revealed his new fall/winter womenswear campaign, will showcase ‘the diversity of female beauty’ with rising stars such as Gigi Hadid, Ashleigh Good, Yaya DaCosta, and trans model Valentijn de Hingh.

As a fierce advocate of equal representation of LGBT models in the fashion industry, Ford selected the stunning Valentijn de Hingh, a transgender Dutch model who recently participated in Bruce Weber’s spring campaign for Barneys with a cast of 17 transgender people.

“The concept is individual style, which was the idea behind my first women’s show in New York. The campaign is focused on the personal, individual style of different types of women.”

Tom Ford

Yaya DaCosta is best known for her stint on America’s Next Top Model as Season 3’s runner-up, and was recently cast as Whitney Houston in the upcoming Lifetime biopic, I Will Always Love You. She shines in Tom Ford’s new campaign, alongside others notable beauties.

Queer Fashion | Fit to A Tee

Queer Fashion | Fit to A Tee – To say that T-shirts are a style staple is an understatement. It is the comfiest and easiest thing to wear. It is easy to accessorize, easy to pair with anything in your closet. Did I mention that it’s comfy and cozy?

Denim and T-shirts are the uniform of the 21st century, still there’s no reason why we can’t mix it up. We know that white tees are the best (and they are), but we’re here to step away from basics and show you 4 new T-shirt designs that you’re sure to fall in love with.

Raglan T-shirts

Athletic-inspired fashion is all the rage these days, and a raglan tee is one of the simple ways you can mix some sportswear into your look. Remember, you’re not on the pitcher’s mound so don’t overdo this trend. Wear your raglan tee with a skirt or with jeans and strappy sandals for a more feminine casual look.

Tomboy T-shirts

Steal some ideas from the Tomboy’s department and grab a slouchy T-shirt. You don’t actually need a boyfriend to own this trend (you can borrow from your brother maybe), because there are so many stores that carry this style. The relaxed and loose fit of this tee is ideal for summer layering.

Striped T-shirts

We know that everyone has a basic white and basic black T-shirt that you practically live in. Here’s another T-shirt to add to your basics—the classic striped tee or the Breton shirt. These shirts were originally designed for French sailors, and now these tees are on the backs of the chicest celebs like Jessica Alba, Hillary Duff, and Mila Kunis.

Tunic T-shirts

Swap out your typical T-shirt length for tunic T-shirts that you can wear over leggings or jeans. These tees are made out of lightweight material and usually ends mid-thigh or just above the knee. You can also use these as a beach cover-up. For petite girls, tunic tees can even be worn as dresses!

Summer Boots: The KitschMix Fashion Round-Up

Summer boots are a must-have when the weather warms up; and come rain or shine, these boots will inject urban appeal into every outfit. So take your pick – from ankle boots and sports-luxe styles, to women’s Desert Boots and Chelsea boots.

Remember shoes trends come and go but ankle boots are always on the fashionista’s agenda; lighter than knee high boots but smarter than pumps, the summer boot is a wardrobe winner. Versatile, you can wear them with a pair of jeans or with funky tights and leggings.

Vogue’s Tomboy Styles Throughout Years

Hurrah – Vogue has a feature on Tomboy style throughout fashion history. From Coco Chanel to Daria Werbowy, to Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, Winona Ryder and lesbian favourite Cara Delevingne.

The word tomboy dates to the late 1500s, when it was used to describe a bold-spirited or immodest woman. Fashionably speaking, the tomboy came of age in the Roaring Twenties, a time of great liberation for women in every way, including dress. The Jazz Age gave birth to the garçonne—a word referring both to the sporty, bob-haired look that women adopted, and a specific type of dress (described at the time by Vogueas being “good for the woman who wishes to look trim and boyish. It is as simple as its name implies, straight in line, one-piece, beltless.”… read the article

Lesbian Fashion Icons – Yes We Have Them, and WOW They’re Hot

Our list of Lesbian Fashion Icons. From the way they wear a shirt, to the cut of their blazers, lesbian celebrities are certainly making their mark and the age of dyke chic is here…

Beth Ditto

We just adore Beth Ditto’s style. Why, because there is no one in this world quite like her or in her league when it comes to fashion. Known for her band, Gossip, Beth Ditto radical feminist ora could not give a crap if she is a size 26, as she has never heard of the term “self conscious”. In fact, give her an item of clothing three sizes too small and she’d be all over it. Her brightly coloured Lycra playsuits seem to be her favourite. She’s loud and proud and we look up to this.

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose certainly knows what she’s going to wear in the morning before she steps out the front door. She is the definition of style – tattoo’d sleeve, vests and skinny jeans is her signature outfit, along with quirky piece of jewellery, which she nails it every time. Ms Rose came out as a big lesbian young, and since then she has always had this edgy cool look about her – she is a women who know’s what she wants in life and that is always a positive thing.

Kate Moennig

In The L Word, Kate Moennig played the tomboy / butch, against the ultra femme backdrop. In playing Shane, she has started a trend, which queer girls all over the world began to copy. The look is simple – white vests with blazers, converse on feet, and straight black hair with a floppy fringe. Most want to be her, and in the L word every lesbian wanted her. Her just-out-of-bed hair, is now the definition of ‘alternative lifestyle haircut’ – its bends gender.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen’s classic suits, crisp trousers, body-conscious sweaters and vests are tailored to be youthful, trendy and flattering. Matched with bright, playful colours and worn with sporty white trainers, Ellen have carved a fashion look that American go crazy for. She is the lesbian staple when it comes to fashion – she proves that menswear is not just for stone butches, but soft and fuzzy day-time-TV super stylist divas too.

AzMarie Livingston

Far from being a classic metropolitan girl, AzMarie Livingston hails from the conservative mid-west town of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Standing almost 5’10″, AzMarie gay essence certainly informs her fashion style. Blazing her own trail, she is unafraid to show her tattoos and sports a crew cut. Her look is unique and she is stunning. We completely understand why Raven-Symoné is smiling so sweetly now.

Summer Shorts: The KitschMix Fashion Round-Up

It’s been a long time coming, but winter is officially behind us and summer is on its way, so shorts are now top of our wish list.

This means one vital change to your wardrobe – shorts. It’s time to ditch the jeans and invest in our key shapes for the season, whether you’re going away on a beach holiday or planning a much-needed stay-cation.

So are legs waxed and tanned to perfection? Well kinda –to the knee counts right?! So now the next question is which shorts style are you going for this season?

Sports shorts – yep, a pair of truly comfy, roomy shorts. For the standout summer look go for shorts have mesh detailing, which can go as part of a street inspired outfit, or lying poolside after a heavy night, or even as an option for gym.

Ripped Shorts – The staple check shirt and cut off tank are a must when it comes to building a retro inspired vacation outfit, but pair it with a pair of ripped denim shorts and you’ll be trending with the best.

Chino Shorts – Ladies when it comes to the dapper suit shorts, luxury printed chino shorts will make that statement this summer. Checks remain strong, along with luxury printed, but hot shades of blue, khaki, stone and burgundy should be a everyday staple. Remember, chinos are becoming a smarter alternative; and more.

Denim Shorts – Jeans are great, but sometimes they just aren’t right for what you’re doing. So when that is the case opt for the denim short, because this season it’s all about light washes, dark blues and black denim shorts.
