The fear people went through – me included. Absolute terror. The horror of being found out. And it stayed with me throughout Coronation Street, until I left, because I would have got the sack. It was the attitudes of some people in it. They wouldn’t have worked with you if they knew.”

Are Lesbians Who Date Trans Men Really Lesbians?

NOTE: The opinions and statements in this article are only a summary of the views stated in the two videos below. This article has absolutely no relationship to my own views on the subject.

“Trans men aren’t really men.”

Transgender men are tired of hearing that.

Recently, two transgender men – Ryan Sallans and Sky – sat down with vlogger Arielle Scarcella to talk about their experiences with lesbians. They answered two questions: If a transgender man transitions to male while in a relationship with a lesbian, what should the lesbian do? And is a lesbian who says she “only dates women and trans men” really a lesbian?

Question 1. I’m a lesbian and my partner transitions. What do I do?

This is tricky. When your partner transitions, standing by his side isn’t always easy – he will experience physical, emotional and personality changes, for example. And if your female partner becomes biologically male, then you suddenly have to wrestle with your identity.

If you loved him as a biological woman, shouldn’t you love him as a biological man? Are you transphobic if you leave?

“It depends,” says Sallans.

According to Sallans, it comes down to the reasoning behind your decisions. If you leave your transitioning partner because his transition is straining the relationship and you’re not emotionally equipped to handle his changes, then that’s okay. However, Sallans believes that if you leave the relationship automatically without even considering attempting to date your partner in his new body, then that’s transphobic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwQ3cz3AqBg

Question 2. I’m a lesbian who dates trans men. Am I a lesbian?

Perhaps you’re a lesbian whose partner suddenly transitioned from female to male, and you find yourself dating a man for the first time. Or perhaps you’re a lesbian who only feels comfortable dating women and transgender men. Either way, can you call yourself a lesbian?

“Call yourself whatever you want,” says Sky. “Labels are for community, not for defining love.” In other words, it doesn’t matter what you call yourself as long as you treat your partners with respect.

However, Sky reminds lesbians who date trans men that calling themselves lesbians belittles the transgender man’s identity – it implies that you don’t see him as a “real” man, since you don’t want to date cisgender (read: “real”) men.

You could have a lot of reasons for not changing your label. Coming out again is hard. Wrestling with yourself is hard. But Sky believes that if you date a trans man, then it’s worth wondering whether your lesbian label negates his male one.

Why Are We Afraid of Butch/Butch Love?

Close your eyes and think of your favorite lesbian couple. Is it tomboy Ellen and glamorous Portia del Rossi? Is it fiery Rose and dreamy Luisa from Jane the Virgin? Is it the hot lesbian stud who lives next door and her adorable girlfriend?

Is it two butch lesbians?

For most people, probably not. Mainstream television is finally making it clear that lesbian relationships are okay…as long as they’re between two feminine lesbians, or (rarely) one masculine one and one feminine one. At your nearest lesbian bar, you are more likely to see a butch lesbian hitting on a girl in heels than you are to see two butch lesbians exchanging numbers.

Why is that? Well, our patriarchal society dictates that lesbians exist for the pleasure of men – and men supposedly want to see two attractive, feminine lesbians. Two attractive women does not threaten his masculinity. Besides, some men believe that no matter how gay a woman claims to be, she’ll always sleep with him.

Western society is also becoming tolerant of butch/femme relationships. A masculine body and a feminine body reinforce traditional heterosexual dynamics, even if both bodies are female.

However, butch/butch relationships make many people uneasy. A butch woman’s mere existence is an affront to manhood – how dare a woman not exist for his pleasure! When two butch lesbians come together, not only is each lesbian spitting in the face of traditional manhood by refusing to be feminine, but they’re also challenging the feminine/masculine dynamic that many believe is necessary for a “real” relationship.

Even certain butch women claim that they would never date a non-femme, because that would diminish their masculinity – they’re not exempt from #MasculinitySoFragile. Their internalized homophobia blinds them to romantic possibility.

In Butch Lesbians Explain: Dating Other Butch Women, YouTube vlogger Arielle Scarcella explores the dynamics of butch/butch relationships, and why society’s aversion to them is so problematic.

Check out the video below.

360 Degree Video Challenges Homophobia In All Directions

A lesbian vlogger, Arielle Scarcella, has teamed up with a group of other well-known youtubers to put together an inspiring film clip utilizing a 360-degree camera. The camera technique allows them all to get their message across in a very unique way, and everyone who has taken part tell their stories about coming out and finding love.

Youtubers Bria and Chrissy, known as BriaAndChrissy on youtube, both took part in the video and Bria describes her experience when she came out to her mum.

I remember she said to me, ‘when am I going to look at you and not see gay?’ I knew exactly what she meant because I couldn’t look at myself and not see gay.”

Chrissy, the other half of the duo recalls:

When I first came out I was really afraid of being judged by my conservative small-town community, and I was. It was really difficult to have people look at me in the face and not see me as the person that I was.”

But during the video both girls give out a positive vibe as well as they explain once they became involved in the LGBT community they slowly learned to accept themselves.  The participants talk about the need for accepting who you are and explain that universal love is a positive and good thing. Many of them found their self-acceptance through the LGBT community, even though the process was slow for some.

Another youtuber in the video, Stephanie Frosch, sums up the experience of self- acceptance and coming out by saying:

I think the important thing to remember is, no matter what the struggle you’re going through, it’s almost like a thunderstorm. You may not see happiness at the end of it, but just like thunder clouds go away, the sun is always there the whole time.”

The video is a brilliant piece of film with a positive and strong message to all so let’s hope it gets as much recognition as possible.

Bisexuals Explain Lesbians Dating (Video)

In this awesome video (Some) Bisexuals Explain Dating (Some) Lesbians – a follow up to Arielle Scarcella‘s Lesbians Explain Dating Bisexuals –  YouTuber Ashley Mardell delves into the subject of biphobia with fellow bisexuals YouTubers, and their subsequent experiences of dating lesbians.

The key issue raised with the lack of inclusion, especially from lesbian spaces.

Gaby Dunn explains

I don’t love the implication I get from lesbians that I’m somehow less than, like I shouldn’t be involved in their group or I’ve had it easier or like, well, ‘At the end of the day you could just date a man, and you’d be fine.’

There is biphobia in the lesbian community that makes it tough in that if you’re a lesbian who doesn’t have negative feelings about bisexuals, your friends might, and they might give you shit. Or the high-fiving over being gold star.”

Fellow YouTuber Rosie, highlights the issues in dating

I’ve had a problem from other people. It’s quite upsetting that people without knowing the facts would be like, ‘No, I’d never date a bisexual.’ If the relationship is going to work, there are other factors, like love and trust. Your sexuality doesn’t affect that.”

5 Lesbians To Follow On YouTube

For some reason, this generation seems to migrate towards expression on social media. I can’t say that I’m not wrapped up in it myself. One of the things that social media has brought us in the gay community is a way to network and find each other. Not too long ago, you had to hang out in the “gay scene” in order to know other gay people. Thank goodness we can find new lesbians to talk to without leaving the house now! (I’m not really sure if that’s sarcastic or not.)

In a way, this social media outlet has even created its own brand of celebrity – that is, the viral sensation celebrity. It’s something extra special because these viral celebrities often take the time to speak with their fans and actually get to know their community on a personal basis.

Read on to find the 5 lesbian YouTube channels you should be following, along with a selection of my favorite videos.

1. Bria and Chrissy

Bria and Chrissy have been some of my favorite lesbian celebs (celesbians?) for quite a while now. Their love is inspiring, and they’re also super funny and talented. If you haven’t had the chance to check out their channel yet, you won’t regret it. My favorite Bria and Chrissy video? “10 Worst Ways to Come Out”.

2. HartBeat

Hart is something else entirely. She also falls in the “funny and talented” category that Bria and Chrissy do, but she has a wealth of skits and characters that she uses to convey her message. One of my favorite Hart videos? “Lesbian Issues” – an amusing look at some of the things that we, as lesbians, need to stop doing. I challenge you to not get it stuck in your head!

3. Arielle Scarcella

Unlike most of the lesbians on this list, Arielle takes the unpopular approach of taking on the “serious” issues with a funny twist. Of course, personally I prefer the comedy, that doesn’t mean that her serious issues aren’t important. My favorite video of hers is “Sh*t that Scares Lesbians in Bed”. Pure comedy gold!

4. Hannah Hart

Hannah Hart doesn’t really market herself “as a lesbian”, which makes her different from many of the others on this list. She doesn’t cater to the gay community, but to people in general, which means that her videos have a bit broader of an audience than some of the other channels listed here. The fact is that she’s a comedy genius, and she’s sure to cement herself as one of your favorite comedians on YouTube. My favorite Harto video is “How to Ask if a Girl is Gay”, which totally explores the awkwardness of hitting on a girl who might be straight.

5. Haley Kiyoko

Unlike the rest of the lesbians on this list, Haley Kiyoko is primarily a musician rather than a comedienne. She’s got a nice sound that’s reminiscent of older pop songs (she brings to mind Aly and AJ from the early 2000’s, for me at least). If you’re looking for a lesbian musical influence to add to your play lists, don’t miss Haley Kiyoko. My favorite of her songs? “Girls Like Girls”.

How Do You Transition Your Gender (FTM)? (Video)

People identify with their biological sex in various ways. However, sex and gender are two distinct concepts. Sex refers to ones biological sex. Gender refers to the social constructs around sex.

As individuals we seek to expression our preferred or identified gender differently. Some of us are happy to take on the dress and mannerisms of another gender at times, others want to fully transition into living as their identified gender.

Why Lesbian Sex Is Better…

Ummm hello!! Do we really need explain why lesbian sex is better?

Because you do know scientist have already ascertained the sex between two women generates much better orgasms.

So merry early Christmas lesbians!

Researchers at the Kinsey Institute surveyed over 6,000 men and women about their sex lives and, boo-yah, the lesbians were revealed to be quite good at coming.

Watch the video below, as Arielle Scarcella breaks down why The Gay Ladies get to have better sex.

Women Explain The Science Behind Gaydar

It’s been said you can’t judge a book by its cover, but in our gay world there is this crazy little thing called ‘Gaydar’.

The idea of ‘Gaydar’ is that we gay people are highly accurate at detecting other gay people.

Hmmm, is it that easy? Can you look at someone and know if they are gay, bisexual, straight, pansexual… and so on?

I’m not too sure. I’ve always found it a lot harder to spot a lesbian. Some, women find it easier to hide their sexual orientation. Some do not fit those classy stereotypes the world has about lesbians – a) short hair, b) flat shoes and c) practical clothing.

[interaction id=”55e4bd3dd126414f21123128″]

The fact is, just like straight people, LGBT people come in all types. The only way to know anyone’s sexuality for sure is to ask.

And yes, that can be an intimidating task, but as long as you’re respectful and do it with a kind heart you’ll know for sure.

SeX.ED 101 | Vagina Confidence

Vagina. When was the last time you said the “V” word out loud and didn’t feel a little self-conscious?

In an age of skin-baring pop stars, crazed internet porn and the sexualisation of women, it seems ironic that vaginas are still considered the most taboo area of human anatomy.

So, why is it still so hard for women to talk openly about their vagina?

It took me while to feel comfortable with my vagina, and to even look at it. I used to think it was something to be hidden and ashamed of. But, in time I learnt to see the wonder in vaginas, especially in other women, and in time I saw that pleasure in mine.

According to a study in the U.S, women who feel confident and comfortable about their vaginas have more sex and get more head.

Body confidence is important. All vaginas are beautiful.

Did you know…

Vagina directly translated from Latin means sheath or scabbard. But its name is constantly changing over time. The most universal nicknames for vagina is pussy, muff, cootch, twat and c**t.

Australian feminist and scholar Germaine Greer once said that the latter “is one of the few remaining words in the English language with a genuine power to shock”.

C is a recognised word and can be found in various English-language dictionaries including our own Macquarie dictionary, where it is defined as “the female genitalia” as well as “a contemptible person”.

In various indigenous languages it is referred to as “nungle” and “kuckles” (also the name of a Broome-based band).

In French it is called “la chat”, “tarte au poile” (hairy tart) and more politely, “le foufoun”.

The dubious colloquialism “hokey” is used to describe a loose foofa. According to the urban dictionary, the term is derived from the song The Hokey-Pokey, meaning you can put your left leg in and shake it all about.

TV show host Oprah Winfrey even has a name for it – the vajayjay.

Then there’s foofa, box, pink, cock massager, one car garage, sperm dumpster, hoo-ha, axe wound, lady bits, china, vulva, blossomful of nectar, muffin, toolbox, velvety love folds, pastrami meat flaps, pin cushion, catchers mitt, cuckoos nest, the wound that never heals, bearded clam, beef curtains, tunatown, vertical taco, bajango, catpipe, nozzle trap, bushburger, front wedgie, meat hole, fanunu, pecker wetter, dirty south.

Come to think of it, maybe vagina isn’t so bad after all.

The Lies Lesbians Tell

Have you ever been in a relationship where the communication was lacking? Either one of you or even both weren’t being truthful with each other? You’re supposed to care for the person you’re in a relationship with…. right? So why do people constantly lie, cheat, and manipulate?

While most people generally want to be in healthy, truthful relationships, that isn’t always the way it plays out. First we have to think about human nature. We may not realize it, but lots of the decisions we make are based on ideas and instincts that were passed down to us from our ancestors. One of those traits is lying.

Lying is part of our human nature, because most of the time the decisions we make are based on our emotions. As we get closer to another person, we both intentionally and unintentionally share with them information about who we are. This is because as humans, we have a fundamental need to be understood.

While it is absolutely necessary to trust your significant other, this also lays the ground for deception. After all, who makes a better victim than someone who is eager and willing to trust everything you have to say?

What Should Lesbians Say When Mistaken For Men?

You know the scene. You’re walking around with your girl friend and some dude starts saying “Young man! Excuse me!” Then you look up at him (kind of in shock) and he goes “Oops, young lady, sorry!”

What to do? I’m not often mistaken as a boy, but I know how it can leave you feeling. Some people can be insulted some feel indifferent or even a little proud… It really depends on the person, just like anything else.

Top 10 Stupidest Anti Gay Laws in the USA

Even though same-sex marriage is now legal, the majority of US still has other discrimination laws against LGBT.

Most states do not have nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people in the workplace, public accommodations, or housing, which means you can be sacked for being gay, or refused to rent a home. Many schools across the country still lack enumerated policies that protect LGBT students from bullying and discrimination. Some states go so far as to have “no promo homo” laws in place, which forbid teachers in public schools from even mentioning homosexuality, at least in a positive light.

There is still along way to go LGBT civil rights in the USA.

Bisexual Women Myths Busted

You’ve probably heard a lot of stereotypes about bisexuality – the bastard stepchild of sexual orientations. Its something a lot gay and straight people struggle to figure out.

Most people can’t even agree on a definition of bisexuality, which has led to a lot of confusion, angst and prejudices.

bisexual-03

No one is really bisexual. It’s just a phase. They’re either gay and they can’t admit it, or they’re straight and they’re just experimenting. So, why can’t they make up their minds? Because you know, bisexuals can’t be trusted. They’ll just leave you for a man/woman.

They can’t be monogamous. They can’t be happy unless they’re sleeping with a man and a woman at the same time – bisexuals don’t have real relationships. They’re fun for a roll in the hay though.

Bisexual women are sleeping with the enemy. They are stealing lesbian energy and giving it to men. They just want heterosexual privilege. It’s easy to be bisexual because it’s chic.”

We’ve heard it all… so let bust that myth bubble once and for all.

The Undeclared Debate – Lesbians Explain Butts Vs. Boobs

There’s an undeclared debate among those turned on by female parts and it goes something like this: “Are you a boobs or a butt, guy/girl/person?”

Does society like boobs or butts?

Now, while we clearly stand firm that someone shouldn’t be defined by their body parts, a recent graphic by none other than porn sites PornHub and YouPorn, in partnership with Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten, found that the world is clearly divided on the issue.

boobs-butt-01

The findings suggest that some countries and states are lusting more over certain bits of human anatomy than others. People up north seem to go for boobs while those down south like their butts. The exceptions are Southeast Asia, Australia, India and Argentina, where busty searches are more common.

The Complex Dynamics of Lesbian Friendships

Ah the dynamics of lesbian friendships. Lines get blurred and boundaries have no limits, but we wouldn’t do without our lesbian BFFs.

What you have to remember though, is friendships are among the most complex, but meaningful relationships in our lives. These unique bonds often run deeper than family ties, and sometimes last longer than our relationships with spouses or lovers.

What Lesbians Say vs. What They Really Mean

Queer women can be a confusing and complex lot. No, we’re not trying to perpetuate a stereotype or make a mockery, it’s just sometimes true.

Human beings in general are complex creatures, and the sooner we accept this, the sooner we can learn to laugh at ourselves and move on.

We often hide behind sarcastic phrases and straight up lies in hopes of improving our reverse psychology skills, tricking people into believing what we want them to believe.

We say we’re fine when we are not, and we tell people we want to be friends, when really we want to be lovers. We have all been guilty of hiding behind claims and false expressions, hoping whomever we’re talking to can read our minds, or at least be tricked by our statements.
