The UK Gets Its First Drag King Bar

Sue Northover and wife Frankie Du Mongh have unveiled the UK’s first karaoke bar aimed at male impersonators.

Kings Bar, in Blackpool, is now pulling in crowds every night, with Sue working as compere at the bar whilst dressed as her male alter ego Rogue said:

We’re having an absolute blast.”

And although the bar’s website highlights that the bar is “owned by women for women” including transgender customers, everybody is more than welcome.

She told the Daily Star.

Absolutely everybody is welcome, and we do get all kinds in here, but we provide free moustaches for women that want to get in on the act.”

The pair – who also offer a Drag King Workshop – said the the reason they opened the bar is because they want “drag kings to be as respected as drag queens.

There shouldn’t be any difference between me performing a Queen classic and a drag queen singing a Whitney Houston song.”

Frankie also pointed out that drag is not always linked to homosexuality, stating:

People assume drag kings must be lesbians, but it’s not necessarily about sexuality, it’s about expressing yourself and embodying a different character.”
