Ellen DeGeneres Moved To Tears By Wife Portia De Rossi’s Birthday Gift

Ellen DeGeneres has just celebrated her 60th birthday in a special episode of her hit television show and was moved to tears by a special gift from wife Portia de Rossi.

Talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres, turned 60 last Friday, and received plenty of birthday wishes.

But it was a thoughtful present from wife Portia de Rossi that moved DeGeneres to tears.

In a surprise appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that aired Thursday, de Rossi presented her wife with the gift to end all gifts.

“It’s your 60th birthday, and this gift had to be really special and it had to represent who you are and what you really care about. So, I combined that with the fact that literally guys, for like the last two years, Ellen has said to me, ‘I feel like I’m not doing enough.’ Every day, almost. So, I put all that together and I got you this gift.”

De Rossi then played a recorded birthday message that highlighted DeGeneres’ hero, Dian Fossey, an American scientist who studied gorillas in Africa. Fossey founded the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda to observe and protect mountain gorillas.

Though she was murdered in 1985, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund continues her work. And now, thanks to de Rossi, the fund will have an Ellen DeGeneres Campus.

“So, for your birthday, Ellen, I am bringing you and your hero Dian together by building the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Ellen, you will carry on Dian’s legacy by giving them a permanent home in Rwanda. Now, you will join Dian as a protector and champion of these amazing animals, the mountain gorillas,” de Rossi added. “Happy birthday.”

Is anyone else getting misty-eyed, or is that just us?

Ellen DeGeneres To Oprah: “I Didn’t Ever Think I Was Going To Come Out”

Oprah’s Master Class returned this Sunday, with Ellen DeGeneres sharing what she’s learned on her path to becoming a beloved daytime talk show host.

In 1997, Ellen became an unintentional activist when she announced she was gay around the same time that her television character came out on the show.

This decision, Ellen admits, was one she never thought she’d make. Talking to Oprah Winfrey, the comedian said she feared that coming out would end her career.

I certainly didn’t ever that I was going to come out. Period. And I didn’t think I’d be coming out on a show, ever.”

DeGeneres said she changed her mind after a friend gave her a ‘hippie retreat’ at the Esalen Institute called Changing the Inner Dialogue as a gift.

I wanted to know what the inner dialogue of my subconscious mind was, and it was scary and crazy. What came out of listening to what I had been saying to myself is. “Would I still be famous? Would they still love me if they knew I was gay?” And my fear was, “No, they wouldn’t.”

But DeGeneres said she felt shame that she was hiding her sexuality.

I just didn’t want to pretend to be somebody else anymore so that people would like.”

Forget The Seven-Year-Itch, Ellen DeGeneres And Portia De Rossi Are As Happy As Ever.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has dismissed rumours that she is to divorce her wife Portia de Rossi, saying:

There’s not one ounce of truth to any of it.”

Speaking on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show, DeGeneres said:

We really don’t almost break up, we don’t fight, we’re madly in love, and I guess it’s boring. It’s so ridiculous to me,’ she continued. ‘There’s not one ounce of truth to any of it. I’m very happily married. In fact, the only thing we ever argue about is who loves who more. That is all. It’s really true.”

Explaining that she doesn’t pay attention to showbiz gossip, she said:

We don’t know anything about it until somebody tells us. I don’t read the tabloids, I don’t have a publicist. I don’t know why they do this. We’re kind of flattered because for a while no one cared about us and we thought “Oh, lesbians aren’t worthy of tabloid stories” so now we’re kind of flattered that they care about us.”

Having celebrated their seventh anniversary last month, the grinning pair walked hand-in-hand through New York on Thursday.

DeGeneres and de Rossi first started dating in 2004, and married in August 2008.

Ellen DeGeneres Questions Caitlyn Jenner’s Subdued Support Of Marriage Equality

When Caitlyn Jenner appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show last week, Ellen’s reactions were mixed, especially in response to Jenner’s views on same-sex marriage.

Calling herself a “traditionalist,” Jenner admitted that she used to oppose equal marriage, before publicly coming out as transgender.

I think, like a lot of people on this issue, I have really changed my thinking here to, ‘I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.’ That’s not my job, okay?”

Explaining that she had changed her mind on the issue, she said:

If the word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.”

However, DeGeneres appears to have been taken aback by the answer – telling SiriusXM host Howard Stern that she was baffled.

She said:

Caitlyn Jenner is on the show today, and she really still has a judgement about gay marriage. I said to her: ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you – this is like really confusing to people – but you still have a judgement about gay people and marriage’.

She said ‘if the word marriage is that important’ …and I was like, ‘it is, because that’s the word!’. We want the same thing as everybody.”

DeGeneres also questioned the star’s Republican beliefs – despite Republicans actively opposing trans rights.

She’s a Republican and conservative – and I think a lot of Republicans are wishing she wasn’t a Republican.”

The entertainer also revealed that Jenner refused to dance with her – which most guests including President Obama have done on her talk show.

She said:

No, she didn’t dance. I don’t think she’s a dancer. Maybe she didn’t want to dance with me cause I’m a lesbian! She was great, it was a great interview. I don’t really know her, and I’m trying to understand it, because I don’t fully understand it either.

I also want everyone to be happy I don’t fully understand all of that, but I want her to be happy. Which is what I want for her, for me.”

The Ellen DeGeneres Show was once again was the pace-setter for nominations for the 2015 Daytime Emmy Awards. However, she was not the only LGBT women to be in contention for a Daytime Emmy.

DeGeneres’ Show looks to continues its dominance in the category of outstanding talk show/entertainment, an award the show has already won an astounding eight times.

DeGeneres is also nominated as executive producer of the show, but not as outstanding talk show host after taking herself out of the running in that category several years ago after six wins in seven years.

Her show will compete with Live With Kelly and Michael, The Wendy Williams Show, and The Talk which earned nominations for Sara Gilbert both as an executive producer and a host.

Nominated with Gilbert are her co-hosts Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler and Sheryl Underwood.

Missing from the nominations as a show and for its hosts was The View, which suffered this season from the departure of Rosie O’Donnell.

Transgender actress and activist Laverne Cox earned a nomination in the category of Outstanding Special Class Special for the MTV program Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word.

Out actress Meredith Baxter, best known for her role on Family Ties, was nominated as Outstanding Special Guest Performer in a drama series for her recurring role last year in The Young and the Restless.

This year’s Daytime Emmycast is set to air April 26 on cabler Pop, originating from a soundstage on the Warner Bros. lot. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is hoping to restore some stature to the event after several years of decline. Last year’s ceremony aired only as a webcast, resulting in a slew of no-shows among winners.

Sam Smith Talks Coming Out, And Being a Spokesperson for the Gay Community With Ellen DeGeneres

Sam Smith is a star on the rise. With a beautiful voice, the British singer has risen to the charts with tracks like ‘La La La’, ‘I’m Not the Only One’ and ‘Stay With Me’.

He’s also racked up a plethora of awards for his talent including MOBOs for Best Song, Best Album and Best Male Artist while at the American Music Awards he won for Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock. And on top of this, he’s also making a name for himself in Hollywood with friends such as Taylor Swift, Dianna Agron and Katy Perry.

But earlier this year the singer made headlines for an entirely different reason when after coming out as gay earlier this year (his album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ is about an ex-boyfriend) he said that he didn’t want to be a spokesperson for the gay community. However, in a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show he clarified his comments.

sam-smith

“I’m a singer and a songwriter. I get upset sometimes because I don’t talk about it too much. People say, ‘he doesn’t want to be a spokesperson for the gay community.’ I do, of course I do. I want to be a spokesperson for everyone. Ya know, straight people, gay people, bisexual. I don’t want to be limited.”

Sam Smith

Understandably the singer doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed nor does he want to be put on a pedestal for his gayness – after all ‘spokesperson’ is a nice title to have but as Sam Smith is only 22 years old it seems like an unnecessary weight to place on his shoulders. And, as Ellen noted, for many people his coming out is enough as it shows people that he is gay and successful and could inspire others to feel better about their own sexuality.

During the interview he also added that he’s known he was gay from a young age and that coming out in the public eye felt “brave”:

“It didn’t feel like a coming out. I came out when I was like four years old, my mom said she knew when I was like three. So I didn’t have to actually properly come out.”

The Long Arm of the Modelling, Photoshop Fail Flagged by Ellen DeGeneres

After facing a photoshopping scandal, Ellen invited this young model to discuss the controversy. The results may surprise you.

Photo-shopping models is becoming a massive taboo, with many calling for its ban (with some success), but retailers are still using unrealistic photos of women to distortion the reality of beauty.

Last month a Target swimsuit ad proved to be target for its ridiculous photoshop fails – you know, the one with the crotch cut out and arms reaching past the model’s knees.

On her show, Ellen DeGeneres decided to give the model a chance to explain just how much the photo was actually retouched…

Target has issued a response to the backlash and criticism it received when they published photos to their website. The statement reads: “In response to your query about the swimsuit image on Target.com, this was an unfortunate error on our part and we apologise. We have removed the image from our Web site,” a company spokesman said. Asked how the mistake occurred, “It was the result of a photo editing error on our part.”

Lesbian Icon: Generation Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres might be one of the most un-supposing heralds of gay pride in the United States. As a comedienne, her humor has always been remarkably lacking in the edgy, mean-spiritedness that almost anyone aspiring to stand-up comedy seemed to think was a need in order to succeed. Ellen’s persona was straight-faced, beneath that warm and insightful—generally likable. She came out as gay in 1997, amidst great controversy and more than a little vitriol. Her television show at that time, a sit-com entitled “Ellen”, ran for a year after DeGeneres’ announcement, and irrepressibly continued to stand for the representation of lesbians in the media. The plot of her show gave her character a girlfriend, and this was aired, as in seen onscreen, during prime time, in a nation and at a time where cultural attitudes that supported such a thing were very much in the minority. The network itself even added a parental advisory to the show for merely kissing.

In the past fifteen or so years, attitudes have changed. Such a change in so many people, whether great or gradual, did not come from waiting in silence. It took someone like Ellen DeGeneres to break the silence and put herself in the line of fire, and continue to speak up regardless.

DeGeneres currently runs a talk show where she continues to be the one of the primary voices, and the widest-reaching in the nation, when it comes to speaking up against bullying related to gender-orientation, and bias crimes.

This passionate steadfastness has immense value to those who continue to suffer from gender orientation discrimination. At the same time, Ellen naturally maintains a broad appeal to multiple audience demographics interested in a variety of issues and topics. She gave her voice to the scatterbrained fish character Dory in the 2003 animated film Finding Nemo. According to the DVD commentary, that character had been conceived as male until writer-director Andrew Stanton overheard an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that his wife was watching.
