Kelly Osbourne Calls Out Young Female Celebrities Pretending To Be Gay

While promoting her new memoir on the site Pride Source, There Is No F**king Secret: Letters from a Bad**s B**ch, Kelly Osbourne was asked about how she labels her own sexuality.

She answered that while she has never been in a relationship with a woman, she is not opposed to the possibility.

I’m open to loving anybody. It’s about the person. I don’t think it’s about sexuality at all… It’s not like I’m trying to be forward-thinking or progressive ― it’s just that sexuality is a word I try not to even define the way the world defines it. It’s the person who you are sexually attracted to… My whole rule is, never say never. I’ve never been in a relationship with a woman, but I don’t know that it’s not a possibility.”

However, Osbourne told the publication that one of her biggest frustrations when it comes to Hollywood’s relationship with the LGBTQ community is when “people claim to be gay and then are not.”

I also don’t like it when people claim to be gay and then not. There’s this whole generation of young Hollywood girls who can’t find love where they think it’s supposed to be, and then they come out being gay and two weeks later they have a boyfriend. It drives me nuts!”

She adds:

I’m like, I know you. I’ve known you pretty much since before you used to shit outside of a diaper. You are not gay! But I think outing somebody in that way is just as bad as outing somebody who has not come out of the closet. It’s one of those things I have to keep to myself… and it drives me fucking crazy!”

The 32-year-old television personality thinks its damaging the entire LGBT rights movement.

I think it takes all the proactive work the LGBT community has done and sets them back ‘Oh, so now you’re gay? Then two weeks later: “Oh no, that was just a phase.” You don’t get to do that.

I’ve marched till my feet bled for the right of equal love in the gay community, and you’re just gonna step in because it looks cool for you and now tell everybody that you’re a lesbian when you’ve never even seen another puss that’s not yours so you can get attention?”

Sarah Paulson Opens Up About Acting, And Dating Older Women

Last year, news broke American Horror actress Sarah Paulson, who was about to turn 41, was dating the actress Holland Taylor, who is 32 years her senior.

The online reaction was immediate and (rare for a celebrity dating story) almost entirely positive.

Paulson, for her part, found the sudden attention “surreal.”

In an interview with the New York Times, she says she tried to keep her distance from the hubbub but acknowledged,

My choices in romantic partners have not been conventional, and therefore the idea that it is ‘other’ makes it compelling.”

Before dating Taylor, Paulson was in a seven-year relationship with the actress Cherry Jones, who is 18 years older than she is. Before that, she dated men, including the actor and playwright Tracy Letts, who is nine years older and to whom she was engaged.

She never kept her same-sex relationships secret, but she has been wary of labelling her sexuality, for fear of being “skewered” should she change her dating habits later on.

If my life choices had to be predicated based on what was expected of me from a community on either side, that’s going to make me feel really straitjacketed, and I don’t want to feel that,” she said. “What I can say absolutely is that I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor.”

The women first met at a dinner party about a decade ago, when Paulson was still with Jones. Nevertheless, she thought that Taylor was “probably the most exquisitely beautiful woman I’d ever seen.”

They crossed paths again a few years later, when the actress Martha Plimpton asked both to record videos for her reproductive-rights organization, A Is For.

Paulson was filming American Horror Story: Asylum at the time, and Taylor was working on her one-woman play, Ann, about the former Texas governor Ann Richards.

After that, they followed each other on Twitter and exchanged direct messages before finally deciding to go out for dinner. They have now been together for a little more than a year.

Paulson said she had never seriously dated anyone her own age.

There’s a poignancy to being with someone older. I think there’s a greater appreciation of time and what you have together and what’s important, and it can make the little things seem very small. It puts a kind of sharp light mixed with a sort of diffused light on something. I can’t say it any other way than there’s a poignancy to it, and a heightened sense of time and the value of time.”

She has always gravitated toward her elders, she added, beginning in junior high school.

I had a complicated home life, and my teachers, predominantly my theatre teachers and my English teachers, were very dedicated to taking care of me in a particular way. And in doing so, I think I developed a very easy rapport with people older than myself.”

Hunger Games’ Star Amandla Stenberg Says She “Identifies as a Black, Bisexual Woman”

Amandla Stenberg, the actress who played beloved character Rue in the first Hunger Games film, revealed that she is bisexual in a heartfelt video on Thursday.

The 17-year-old actress opened up about her sexuality while taking overTeen Vogue’s Snapchat account, telling fans about how difficult it has been to keep a part of herself hidden.

The Hunger Games star spoke about identity and the other women like Solange Knowles (who interviewed the star for the magazine’s January issue) and Ava Duvernay who have inspired her in being herself.

https://twitter.com/amandlastenberg/status/685491403829321728

Talking in the video, she says:

I cannot stress enough how important representation is, so the concept that I can provide for other black girls is mind-blowing. It’s a really really hard thing to be silenced, and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and just mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in,”

amandla-cover-02 (1)

As someone who identifies as a black bisexual woman, I’ve been through it, and it hurts and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable. But then I realized, because of Solange and Ava Duvernay and Willow [Smith] and all the black girls watching this right now, there’s absolutely nothing but change. We cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears, to be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow. I definitely believe in the concept of rebellion through selfhood, and rebellion through embracing your true identity, no matter what you’re being told. Here I am, being myself, and it’s hard and vulnerable, and it’s definitely a process, but I’m learning and growing. Thank you for supporting me and doing this, and thank you to Teen Vogue. This is just the beginning, though; we have a lot of work to do for all women of color. We need more representation in film and television. We need our voices to be louder in the media. And not just women of color—bisexual women, gay women, transgender women, mentally ill women. I’m sick of all the misogyny and homophobia and transphobia that I see around me, and I know you are too. Thank you for listening and goodnight.”

CA2.tif

This is especially powerful coming from someone so young (17!). There are still so few public figures that are both black women and out, and Amandla talking about intersectionality is certainly something to be celebrated. Young women that are fans of her work will be inspired by her words and actions, just as we are today.

I think that as a black girl you grow up internalizing all these messages that say you shouldn’t accept your hair or your skin tone or your natural features, or that you shouldn’t have a voice, or that you aren’t smart,” Amandla told Teen Vogue. “I feel like the only way to fight that is to just be yourself on the most genuine level and to connect with other black girls who are awakening and realizing that they’ve been trying to conform.”

Next up for Amandla, the film As You Are, where she plays a young girl whose friendship group is the focus of a police investigation in the early 1990s.

Top 11 Lesbians And Bisexual Women In Hollywood Right Now

There has been a huge shift in the dynamics of Hollywood lately. Where once it was quite taboo to come out of the closet, now there are many men and women who are embracing their sexuality and being honest with their fans. It’s nice to see how successful and happy they are.

Read on to find the top 11 (out) lesbians and bisexual women who are active in Hollywood. These women might not represent the rest of us and our “real world problems”, but they have their own set of problems associated with coming out.

11. Amber Heard

Amber Heard 02

Amber Heard is a beautiful young woman from Texas who rose to fame with such movies as Zombieland, Pineapple Express, and The Rum Diary. Contrary to some statements that have been publicized, Amber herself has said that she is not “out” – because she was never “in”. She also adds that she is “totally open” to love, and doesn’t want to be labeled one way or another. She’s just a woman trying to make it in Hollywood, and she doesn’t want people to focus on whether she’s with a man or a woman.

10. Clementine Ford

Clementine Ford 02

Clementine Ford is the daughter of Cybill Shepherd, both in real life as well as in The L Word. Their on-screen chemistry shows just how much the two have in common; they work so well together! But she admitted she hated growing up with a famous mother: “It was horrible. I had friends in high school who wanted to have sex with my mother. I’m not going to blame her for being beautiful – but it’s still gross.” Clementine herself is an out bisexual woman.

9. Anna Paquin

anna-paquin-01

I’ll admit that I’ve had a big fat crush on Anna Paquin since 2000, when she played in X-Men. There was a brief period of time that I fell out of my crush with her, but it was recently reinvigorated with her response to body shamers. She stands up strong for the LGBT+ community and is herself a proud bisexual woman.

8. Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan

One of the most prominent child stars of my generation, Lindsay Lohan has had her fair share of struggles with fame, family, and addiction, but her relationship with the DJ Samantha Ronson gained her a fair share of publicity on its own. She has stated that she is not exclusively a lesbian, but she embraces her bisexuality and doesn’t let the negativity bring her down.

7. Ruby Rose

ruby rose

Ruby Rose has sort of come crashing onto the scene lately after her role as Stella on Orange is the New Black. The truth is, she’s been active for much longer than that, but it took the wide-reaching audience of OITNB to catapult her into the sights of a bunch of women who instantly began questioning whether they were really straight after all. She is an androgynous lesbian who identifies as “gender fluid”, and caused gender fluidity to be much more of a mainstream discussion than it ever was before.

6. Tila Tequila

There are likely to be many people against Tila Tequila being on this list, because she used her bisexuality to fuel the fame that was fleeting after she stopped doing nude photoshoots. However, she has recently come out as not bisexual, but rather a lesbian, and in some ways she is inspirational as a testament of what a woman can accomplish. She owns several businesses, has been featured in a number of TV shows, and even featured in an all-female sex tape. And yes, she’s a lesbian.

5. Kristanna Loken

Kristanna Loken

Kristanna Loken is a model-turned-actress who burst her way into the lesbian limelight with her role on The L Word, playing Shane’s brief love interest, Paige. She has also been in a myriad of other movies and says she loves when people recognize her from her earlier works – but her role in Terminator 3 certainly catapulted her out of “anonymity”. She was quoted as saying “If the person with whom I connect happens to be a female, that’s just the way it is. That’s what makes my wheels turn.” This cements her position as a proud bisexual actress, paving the way for those who may be struggling to come out.

4. Michelle Rodriguez

Michelle Rodriguez 99

Most lesbians and bisexual women see Michelle Rodriguez as one of the hottest women to pine over in Hollywood. She’s been a prominent action star, rising to fame with the Fast & Furious franchise, but she has also starred in such movies as Turbo and Avatar – although she is typically cast as the more handy type. Some sources say that she is a lesbian, but she prefers to keep her options open. “I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too fucking curious to sit here and not try when I can. Men are intriguing. So are chicks.” Well, Michelle, that’s a solid way to look at it.

3. Evan Rachel Wood

Evan-Rachel-Wood-2

Evan Rachel Wood is another actress that I’ve had a bit of a crush on for a long time. In 2011, she came out as bisexual in one of the simplest ways she could: “I’m for anything. Meet a nice guy, meet a nice girl.” This has proven to be one of the easiest ways to get Hollywood to stay off your back about who you’re seeing, as we’ve seen from many other actresses – and although we have not uncovered any images of Evan with a woman, I’m certain they’re out there somewhere.

2. Chely Wright

Chely Wright

Unless you’re a fan of American country music (or a close follower of celebrities coming out), you likely haven’t heard of Chely Wright. She was a huge name on the country music scene during the 90s, and she was one of the first country singers to come out publicly as being gay.  She has spoken up for the gay community on many occasions, including her coming out speech: “I hear the word tolerance – that some people are trying to teach people to be tolerant of gays. I’m not satisfied with that word. I am gay, and I am not seeking to be ‘tolerated’.” Way to go Chely!

1. Ellen Page

ellen-page-436

Ellen Page has been a celebrity crush of mine since I first saw her in Hard Candy. She’s gorgeous, intelligent, and just a bit awkward, which of course had lesbians all over the world thinking that she was playing for our team, right? Well, she did end up coming out publicly in 2014, although she had been out of the closet to friends and family for much longer. She has been in a number of high-profile roles, where she usually plays a witty, lovable characters.

3. Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli 02

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli aren’t just a cute couple — they’ve also played a huge role creating one of Netflix’s best original shows – Morelli as writer, and Wiley as actress. This Orange is the New Black power couple got together in 2014, and are still going strong.

hannah-hart-ingrid-01

YouTube power couple Hart and Nilsen confirmed their relationship this year. Talking to DIVA Magazine in October, Hart gushed..

Her name is Ingrid and she is a big YouTuber. But she’s also one of the most brilliant, soulful people I’ve ever met. It’s so good.”

10. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

The 41st Annual People's Choice Awards - Arrivals

Although rumors of divorce seem to always trouble Ellen and Portia, they still are the queen and queen of lesbian couples. They have been together since 2004 and tied the knot in 2008 – the equivalent of a 30-year marriage in celebrity years. They have both kept their successful careers going, and always seem to be incredibly psyched on each other.

11. Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner

Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner

Actress Lily Tomlin and writer Jane Wagner may have gotten legally married in 2013, but the pair met 44 years ago, in 1971.

In the 2012 book We Killed, legendary comic Tomlin told the story of how she’d wanted to come out about her relationship with writer Wagner at the height of the career in ’70s, but was told she couldn’t because it would ruin her career.

And then, after that, we had to go outside to the car, which was in front of the theatre. There was a huge audience, and when we got in the car, her fans were rocking the car back and forth. And the idea that somebody’s career could actually be ruined and that their lives could get ruined was astonishing. To go from that to ‘You can’t let out that you’re gay or they’ll hate you’ struck me.”

Forty years later, they are out and people still love Lily.

12. Lauren Blitzer and Chely Wright

Lauren Blitzer and Chely Wright

Another awesome married couple. Chely and Lauren met only two weeks after Chely came out of the closet in 2010, and they were married soon after. The now have twin sons and post loads of pictures of them on Twitter. Chely has been a great advocate for LGBT rights and did a documentary about her coming out story.

13. Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey

Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey

The band mates went public about their relationship in 2011 after they were discriminated against on a Southwest flight. They don’t talk much about their romantic relationship, but they did say in their statement, “We were simply being affectionate like any normal couple.” Just any normal hot couple.

14. Melissa Etheridge and Linda Wallem

Melissa Etheridge and Linda Wallem

The musician and TV writer were best friends for years before they took it to the next level and Melissa couldn’t be happier.

Finally through relationships and through my own growth process and understanding of my life and my own choices, here I am in a situation where I’m in a relationship with someone who I’ve been friends with for 10 years. We’ve got a track record of friendship-love to begin with. Then to bring that closer was just really natural and a beautiful thing. It’s the most supportive, healthy relationship I’ve ever been in, so I’m not surprised that my music is reflecting that.”

15. Lena Waithe and Alana Mayo

Lena Waithe and Alana Mayo

Producer, writer, and actress Lena Waithe may be on her way to being a household name, but the other half of this power couple is equally impressive. 31-year-old Alana Mayo is the VP of Production at Paramount and was named one of Hollywood’s Up-and-Coming Execs 35 and Under by The Hollywood Reporter. These two could take over the world together.

16. Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne

Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne

Comedian Tig Notaro and wife Stephanie Allynne quietly tied the knot in October. Notaro joked on Twitter: “I’m getting married today. My only fear is that instead of ‘I do’ I’ll say ‘I do do’.”

Netflix’s documentary, Tig, showcases their relationship, including Allynne supporting Notaro through her battle with breast cancer.

17. Rachel Maddow & Susan Mikula

Rachel Maddow & Susan Mikula

MSNBC Superstar Rachel Maddow and artist Susan Mikula have been together since 1999, when Maddow was hired to do yard work on Mikula’s Berkshires property. They now live together in a pre-Civil War farmhouse in western Massachusetts. Livin’ the dream much?

18. Amber Laign and Robin Roberts

Amber Laign and Robin Roberts

Amber Laign and Robin Roberts met while on a blind date. Robin Roberts came out publicly in 2013 over Facebook, and announced that she had been in a relationship with Laign since 2005.

19. Jenna Wolfe & Stephanie Gosk

Wolfe and Gosk (both NBC News correspondents) are some kind of NBC super couple. We’re not sure how they first met, but we’re guessing it was at some kind of super posh Olympics coverage party. We do know that they have two daughters, and are both pretty much rocking this power couple game.

20. Cynthia Nixon & Christine Marinoni

Cynthia Nixon & Christine Marinoni

Since finishing her run on Sex and the City, Cynthia Nixon has stuck to acting in short form pieces of fried gold like Alpha House and Hannibal, while her wife, Christine Marinoni, has been working as a special adviser for community partnerships in the Department of Education in New York. If a politician marrying a hot actress isn’t the definition of a power couple, then what is?

21. Sara Gilbert and Linda Perry

The Talk co-host Sara Gilbert and award-winning songwriter Linda Perry married in 2014 and still seem to be in their honeymoon phase – we dare you to find one photo in which they aren’t both smiling. However, 2015 was a big year for the couple. Gilbert gave birth to the couple’s son, Rhodes Emilio Gilbert Perry, back in February, and the duo released the children’s album Deer Sounds that features Rhodes.

22. Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor

In December 2015, reports revealed that American Horror Story star Sarah Paulson was in a committed relationship with Two and a Half Men actress Holland Taylor. Before then, Taylor, who is 32 years older than Paulson, had admitted to being in a serious relationship with a woman, although she wouldn’t say who it was.

12 Celebrities We Wish Were Gay

With as many celebrities have been turning up lately and saying they’re gay, bisexual, or they “refuse to label themselves”, it has our little lady-loving hearts all aflutter. There are lesbians and bisexual women and genderfluid women all over Hollywood now and I personally am loving it.

Many of my celebrity crushes have already come out as Celesbians in the past few years and I get downright giddy every time I hear about a new one. But there are still a few women left who we would love to come out of the closet in 2016 – here’s our list of the top 12!

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel

There is something about Zooey Deschanel that has completely captured my heart ever since the first thing I saw her in. She’s goofy and cute and bubbly and that makes me feel all fuzzy inside. Sadly, I know she’s not a lesbian – but I wish she’d give us a little glimmer of hope and hint at bisexuality!

Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel came crashing into everyone’s hearts with the release of Disney’s “Frozen”, and she holds a special place for lesbians. After all, she plays a character who doesn’t really seem interested in guys, right? Like, we could all picture Elsa being gay – and you know how bad lesbians want the actors who play lesbian characters to be… Well, lesbians. Right? Well, I’m not sure if Idina (or Elsa) really loves ladies, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream about it.

Indira Varma

Indira Varma

If you aren’t familiar with Indira Varma, she’s one of the actresses on Game of Thrones. She’s been in a lot of other things, too, but she’s most recognized as Ellaria Sand. She’s got everything we want in a celesbian: gorgeous looks, a propensity to play the “badass” female character, and even a sexy voice. All that’s missing is a confession of lady loving!

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson

Ah, Janet Jackson… Making ladies swoon since, well, forever ago. We’re pretty certain that she’s never going to come out, but she’s another one that’s fun to think about. Tell me who hasn’t fantasized about her at least once!

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

J-Lo is another one of those celebrities that you just know is definitely not gay – but you hold out hope that maybe someday she’ll say she’s “always been interested in girls, but had to keep it a secret”.  Hey, she’ll always be welcome as one of us – even if she’s straight.

Emma Watson

giphy

Emma Watson may have started off as the nerdiest in the Harry Potter trio, but she has warmed our hearts by growing into the most incredible young woman. Not only is she a superb actress with an adorable smile, she’s also a great role model for girls everywhere – and she could be a lesbian hero (if it turned out she was a lesbian!).

Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz

We all know I’m a big softie for musicians, and Zoe Kravitz is no exception. She’s gorgeous and talented, and even a multi-tasker: Not only does she act and model, she also creates wonderful music. On top of that, she’s insanely sexy – giving lesbians everywhere something to dream about.

Shay Mitchell

Shay Mitchell

Playing a lesbian character will, of course, make you stand out as a lesbian icon. (Obviously – lesbians love other lesbians, even on TV and in books.) Truth be told, she’s not my favorite Pretty Little Liars star, but that’s not to say I wouldn’t love to hear her come out. Probably not going to happen – but we can dream!

Lena Headey

Lena Headey

Of course Lena Headey would make this list too. Many lesbians fell in love with her back when Imagine Me & You came out (myself included), but her interest has been renewed as she plays the character Cersei on Game of Thrones. She’s still just as sexy as ever, but sadly married to a man – sorry ladies!

Olivia Munn

n9soz

Okay, this is going to make me sound a little lame, but… I was crushing on Olivia Munn before it was cool. I fell in love with her when she was on Attack of the Show! – but she captured the mainstream attention with her role as Sloan on The Newsroom. She actually speaks Japanese and is a total nerd in real life – something that makes her both relatable and badass, all at the same time.

Rosario Dawson

WearyGiganticDorking

Rosario Dawson should go without introduction. She’s the star of Rent and Clerks II (okay, maybe not the star, but she’s got pretty prominent roles in both). She’s always a bit on the tough side, with a soft inner core – definitely something most of us gravitate towards. We’ll welcome you with open arms if you decide to come out, Rosario!

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence has made quite a name for herself in her short time in the spot light, and she’s a face that’s not going to go anywhere, either. Between The Hunger Games series and Silver Linings Playbook, I can’t decide what to like about her more – and I would definitely be OK with her coming out!

Of course this list is just for entertainment, and it’s not really a good idea to make speculations about people’s sexuality. If you have a name to add to our list, drop it in the comments with a quick explanation why!

These Kids Reacting to Caitlyn Jenner Will Give You Hope (Video)

This video showing how children react to Caitlyn Jenner‘s transition is making me tear up with happiness, as I think about a world that is more accepting of the trans community.

The children who participated in the focus group video were presented with two pictures.

The first was a photo of a muscular 1976 Bruce Jenner in all his Olympic glory and the second a photo of Caitlyn Jenner in a red dress from her recent photo spread in Vanity Fair.

Caitlyn Jenner

They were then told the photos showed the same person.

While one child said, “How could a boy turn into a girl? That’s impossible,” the conversation eventually turned into one of acceptance.

One child saying…

It’s important to be yourself because if you’re not yourself, then who are you?”

hatch-cropped-2

The kids were also shown some of the reaction, both positive and negative, to Jenner on social media.

They looked at each other in astonishment when read a tweet, which read:

Bruce Jenner is a sick man and I don’t need a psychiatrist to tell me Bruce Jenner has a mental disorder.”

Several had thoughtful and mature reactions.

hatch-cropped013

I think they’re just scared of change, I think they just want everything to stay the same because they just don’t know how to handle it. It’s important for you to be yourself because if you’re not yourself then who are you?”

TV-show host and comedian Ellen Degeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi took a trip to unannounced trip to Dubai over the weekend – causing a social media storm in the process. The celebrity couple apparently flew from the USA, last Friday to attend The Act Dubai in the Shangri-La Hotel on Sunday evening.

However, the media in the United Arab Emirates have been a little confused on how to address the fact that the couples are married, as being homosexual is illegal in the United Arab Emirates.

In fact, none of the UAE media mentioned the fact that the duo are married, choosing to skirt the issue entirely.

The National

We’ll just have to wait to see what the American chat show host Ellen DeGeneres and her friend, Scandal and Arrested Development actress Portia de Rossi, are doing in Dubai.”

Of course, we would hope America’s favourite lesbians are also friends . . .

Gulf News

Very little is known about the pair’s visit to the city except that they were invited for dinner by the club’s management.”

Hmmm . . . “pair” is a little different than the word “couple.”

Time Out Dubai

The comedienne was joined by actress Portia de Rossi for dinner at the Peruvian place too.”

Interesting, another random actress joined her on her vacation - Oh wait, that’s her wife!

Arabian Business

Best known for hosting her daytime comedy chat show, DeGeneres was spotted with ‘Scandal’ actress Portia de Rossi on Sunday night.”

How bizarre, Ellen was “spotted” hanging out with her own wife!

Ahlan Live

After the show both stars happily posed for pictures with the performers, before heading back to their hotel.”

Do you think they would have said “both stars” if it was Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Hmmm, we wonder.

However, Al Bawaba, which is based in Amman, Jordan, but has an office in Dubai got the full story. Props to them.

The internet was ablaze yesterday, when TV host and Oscar presenter Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, actress Portia di Rossi were spotted in departures at Los Angeles’ LAX.”

Now that wasn’t so hard, was it?

Degeneres has been a pioneer for LGBT rights in the United States, coming out publicly as a lesbian in 1997 on her television sitcom. She and de Rossi were married in 2008 but have been together since 2004.

Why are so Many Female Celebrities Opting to Not Label Themselves Bisexual?

Last week, when launching her Happy Hippie Foundation campaign to help homeless LGBT youth, Miley Cyrus told the Associated Press that not all her relationships have been “straight or heterosexual”, but no B word in play.

Raven-Symoné is also another women who does not want to be labelled. When asked by Oprah if was gay, Raven gave a very careful answer. “I don’t want to be labelled ‘gay,'” Raven says. “I want to be labelled ‘a human who loves humans.'”

Then there is also Gillian Anderson who also came out as having had a relationship with another woman after the death of an ex-lover. She told the Times newspaper she that she is “aware of the need for being open about fluid sexuality” but has not yet called herself bisexual.

The Oscar-nominated Maria Bello came out in a New York Times op-ed she titled Coming Out as a Modern Family. She openly wrote about falling in love and beginning a relationship with her best female friend, but refrained from using the ‘B’ word and instead called herself a, “whatever.”

Later she told the Huffington Post,

Things shift and change and it’s fluid, and I think the younger generation is knowing that more and [is] excited about it. It’s not static — life just isn’t — and we have to create better labels to embrace the beauty of who we are.”

In 2014 the ex-Spice Girl, Mel B, told the Guardian newspaper:

People call me lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, but I know who’s in my bed and that’s it. I have a huge libido and a great sex life… Well, I did have a four-year relationship with a woman. But I’ve been very happily married for seven years to a penis. Ha ha! An amazing guy.”

So why are so many women opting to call themselves Bisexual? Is it that they are simply pansexual, and not limiting their sexual choice to biological sex, gender, or gender identity? Or is it that labels are simply too oppressive?

I am from a generation where stating who I am and who I am dating was about pride. I am proud to call myself a gay woman – a lesbian. And my friends will equally address themselves as such – be it bisexual, queer or gay.

So why the uncomfortable shift to not label? We have seen many celebrities be burnt with announcing they’re bisexual, but ending up with a man – Jessie J managed to cause so much offence when she stated she was no longer bisexual.

The Sex and the City star, Cynthia Nixon, once told the Daily Beast…

I don’t pull out the ‘bisexual’ word because nobody likes the bisexuals. Everybody likes to dump on the bisexuals.”

Then there are others who champion their bisexuality. Anna Paquin went to town on Larry King when questioned her about her sexuality during an interview.

“Are you a non-practicing bisexual,” King asked her.

“Well, I am married to my husband [Stephen Moyer], and we are happily monogamously married,” she replied.

“But you were bisexual?” King asked.

“Well, I don’t think it’s a past tense thing,” she continued. “Are you still straight if you are with somebody?

“If you were to break up with them or if they were to die, it doesn’t prevent your sexuality from existing. It doesn’t really work like that.”

So does refusing to adopt the bisexual label contributed further to bi invisibility?

No stranger to the label debate is Australian actress and founder of feminist website herself.com, Caitlin Stasey. When interviewed last year, she stated she recently decided to steer clear of labelling her sexuality.

Because if I say I’m bisexual, people say it doesn’t exist, and if I say I’m gay, people say I’m belittling the plight of all other women who consider themselves gay. I found a word that I identified with, I was told I couldn’t have it, and now I just think fuck it. I’m attracted to whom I’m attracted to.”

Some of us live in a countries where same-sex relationships are still not legally recognised – where being a part of the LGBT community is still considered “other”.

So in one sense the coverage is good – it sparks conversations that hopefully help people realise sexuality lies on a spectrum, and where you fall is your place to label if you feel the need to do so.

Maybe one day bisexuality will be the norm. Or perhaps we’re slowly but surely entering an age, led by the politically correct Tumblr generation, in which we recognise, accept, and are no longer fearful of sexuality.

And beyond the labelling? Maybe one day we’ll wake to the news of a famous actress admitting she’s had relationships with many people, no mention of gender.
