Cynthia Nixon’s ‘Unqualified Lesbian’ Campaign Merch Is Iconic

Last month, actress Cynthia Nixon AKA Sex and the City’s Miranda gave the people of New York what they deserve, announcing that she would be running for governor.

A cause of celebration for all, with the exception of council speaker Christine Quinn, who said Nixon’s interest was a “flight of fancy” and branded her an “unqualified lesbian”.

Quinn told the New York Post last month, referencing her own unsuccessful mayoral bid.

“Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn’t qualified to be the governor.”

Nixon addressed the comments at her campaign launch by saying:

“I don’t have my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs, but in my defence, there is a lot of paperwork involved.”

To support the campaign, pins and T-Shirts with the message ‘unqualified lesbian’ are now for sale on her site.

The former Sex and the City star is challenging New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

Nixon has previously said her lack of political experience is actually a strength because “sometimes a little naiveté is exactly what is needed.”

Qualified and unqualified lesbians alike (and all others), if you want to show your support for Nixon – our rightful governor – you can buy pins (and hopefully more merch soon) here.

Daily Juice: Miley Cyrus Claims Katy Perry’s Hit ‘I Kissed A Girl’ Is Actually About Her

Miley Cyrus Claims Katy Perry’s Hit ‘I Kissed A Girl’ Is Actually About Her

In 2008, Katy Perry told the world through song that she kissed a girl and she liked it. Now, almost 10 years later, Miley Cyrus is saying she’s the girl who inspired the track. (HuffPost)

In an interview with WKTU Cyrus said;

When she came out with ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ I was doing the ‘Hannah Montana’ movie, and I heard her on the radio, they said, ‘Who’d you write that about?’ And she said me.”

Gossipmongers say Ellen DeGeneres is ‘miserable’ with Portia de Rossi

Amid reports that Ellen DeGeneres and her wife of nearly 9 years have been observed in embarrassing fights on the set of her show, caught looking glum at dinners out on the town in addition to their decision to sell their magnificent weekend getaway mansion in Santa Barbara, tongues are wagging in Hollywood that a breakup is looming for the hot power couple. (LGBTQ Nation )

A source said

They’ve been trying really hard to keep their marriage together, but it seems like time is running out. They’re just always at each other’s throats.

Ellen wants to plan an elaborate anniversary and Portia just wants her to concentrate on fixing their marriage,” the insider told the publication.

She feels like Ellen puts a Band-Aid on their problems.”

The gossip comes after $58.6m of the couple’s assets were put up for sale, including a home in Santa Barbara, California, which Ellen had previously described as her “forever” home.

They are also selling a luxury condo in Beverley Hills, which they bought in 2014.

They’re not only headed for a divorce, but they’re also secretly splitting up their assets before they make an official announcement. Not only will they not be growing old in that [Santa Barbara] home, which was their dream, but they won’t be growing old together, period,”

Grey’s Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw says playing a lesbian has changed her life

Grey’s Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw, who is Arizona on the show, has opened up about how playing a lesbian has changed her life.

She told Yahoo Style.

I never would have imagined that I would be able to play a character that would feel like it does so much good.”

She added, it could also provide a crucial tool in teaching family members or friends about homosexuality.

If it’s someone watching it who has someone in their life who is gay, and they might have not understood it before … all of a sudden they have another person or another thing to point to and say: ‘Oh, that’s a different context.’

Being able to play a lesbian as a series regular on television has been enormously rewarding.”

Capshaw, who has also appeared on The L Word and Bones, proudly recalled an example of how representation can help how people see the LGBT community.

My daughter goes to preschool, and the preschool has all kinds of families. “And I guess one of the kids said: ‘You have to have a mom and a dad to have a baby.’ And my daughter said: ‘No. No, you don’t.’ And this was all overheard and told to me later. She said, in a very kind and patient way to that child: ‘There can be a mom and a mom and a dad and a mom and there can be a dad and a dad.’”

Cynthia Nixon had no idea she is quoted in Ivanka Trump’s new book

Staceyann Chin, Rosie O’Donnell, Cynthia Nixon Team Up to Bring ‘MotherStruck!’ to the Stage

In 2011, writer/performer Staceyann Chin published an article called ‘A Single Lesbian’s Quest for Motherhood’ on the Huffington Post website.

Detailing Chin’s decision to dive into motherhood as well as the trials, tribulations and (sometimes comic) mishaps of the process, the article was soon spun off into a series of articles about her experience.

As wonderfully written as all of those pieces are, though, readers and theatre goers alike now have the opportunity to experience them on stage as Chin (with the help of Cynthia Nixon as director and Rosie O’Donnell as a producer) has turned it into a solo show called ‘MotherStruck!’.

110426

The 100 minute (plus the intermission) show covers much of Chin’s life including her childhood in Jamaica, growing up without a mother, Chin’s realisation that she’s a lesbian, the hunt for a sperm donor and even the birth of her daughter.

548290917_1280x720

Of her decision to take MotherStruck from the page to the stage, Chin tells AfterEllen that:

I have always done one-person shows at the Culture Project and so when Allen Buchman [the artistic director] said, “What are you working on?” I said, “Oh, there’s this play”—and it wasn’t really a play yet; it was just a bunch of things that I had written and I was reading aloud. I started doing readings at the Culture Project, and people loved them so much that we started kind of trying to craft a narrative.”

JKC_151214_0075

But do people love the show as much as they loved those readings? For the most part, yes.

David Spencer at The Village Voice says that “Chin’s script is well structured, funny, and moving” and that “her comic delivery exhibits veteran game”, while Charles Isherwood at The New York Times adds that “Chin’s easygoing radiance helps keep you hooked, even when the writing grows slightly slack” and that her story “has plenty of hairpin curves and alarming surprises — no shortage of drama”.

MotherStruck! is now on at The Lynn Redgrave Theatre until January 29, 2016. Head to Culture Project to find out more.

10. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

The 41st Annual People's Choice Awards - Arrivals

Although rumors of divorce seem to always trouble Ellen and Portia, they still are the queen and queen of lesbian couples. They have been together since 2004 and tied the knot in 2008 – the equivalent of a 30-year marriage in celebrity years. They have both kept their successful careers going, and always seem to be incredibly psyched on each other.

11. Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner

Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner

Actress Lily Tomlin and writer Jane Wagner may have gotten legally married in 2013, but the pair met 44 years ago, in 1971.

In the 2012 book We Killed, legendary comic Tomlin told the story of how she’d wanted to come out about her relationship with writer Wagner at the height of the career in ’70s, but was told she couldn’t because it would ruin her career.

And then, after that, we had to go outside to the car, which was in front of the theatre. There was a huge audience, and when we got in the car, her fans were rocking the car back and forth. And the idea that somebody’s career could actually be ruined and that their lives could get ruined was astonishing. To go from that to ‘You can’t let out that you’re gay or they’ll hate you’ struck me.”

Forty years later, they are out and people still love Lily.

12. Lauren Blitzer and Chely Wright

Lauren Blitzer and Chely Wright

Another awesome married couple. Chely and Lauren met only two weeks after Chely came out of the closet in 2010, and they were married soon after. The now have twin sons and post loads of pictures of them on Twitter. Chely has been a great advocate for LGBT rights and did a documentary about her coming out story.

14. Melissa Etheridge and Linda Wallem

Melissa Etheridge and Linda Wallem

The musician and TV writer were best friends for years before they took it to the next level and Melissa couldn’t be happier.

Finally through relationships and through my own growth process and understanding of my life and my own choices, here I am in a situation where I’m in a relationship with someone who I’ve been friends with for 10 years. We’ve got a track record of friendship-love to begin with. Then to bring that closer was just really natural and a beautiful thing. It’s the most supportive, healthy relationship I’ve ever been in, so I’m not surprised that my music is reflecting that.”

15. Lena Waithe and Alana Mayo

Lena Waithe and Alana Mayo

Producer, writer, and actress Lena Waithe may be on her way to being a household name, but the other half of this power couple is equally impressive. 31-year-old Alana Mayo is the VP of Production at Paramount and was named one of Hollywood’s Up-and-Coming Execs 35 and Under by The Hollywood Reporter. These two could take over the world together.

16. Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne

Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne

Comedian Tig Notaro and wife Stephanie Allynne quietly tied the knot in October. Notaro joked on Twitter: “I’m getting married today. My only fear is that instead of ‘I do’ I’ll say ‘I do do’.”

Netflix’s documentary, Tig, showcases their relationship, including Allynne supporting Notaro through her battle with breast cancer.

17. Rachel Maddow & Susan Mikula

Rachel Maddow & Susan Mikula

MSNBC Superstar Rachel Maddow and artist Susan Mikula have been together since 1999, when Maddow was hired to do yard work on Mikula’s Berkshires property. They now live together in a pre-Civil War farmhouse in western Massachusetts. Livin’ the dream much?

18. Amber Laign and Robin Roberts

Amber Laign and Robin Roberts

Amber Laign and Robin Roberts met while on a blind date. Robin Roberts came out publicly in 2013 over Facebook, and announced that she had been in a relationship with Laign since 2005.

19. Jenna Wolfe & Stephanie Gosk

Wolfe and Gosk (both NBC News correspondents) are some kind of NBC super couple. We’re not sure how they first met, but we’re guessing it was at some kind of super posh Olympics coverage party. We do know that they have two daughters, and are both pretty much rocking this power couple game.

20. Cynthia Nixon & Christine Marinoni

Cynthia Nixon & Christine Marinoni

Since finishing her run on Sex and the City, Cynthia Nixon has stuck to acting in short form pieces of fried gold like Alpha House and Hannibal, while her wife, Christine Marinoni, has been working as a special adviser for community partnerships in the Department of Education in New York. If a politician marrying a hot actress isn’t the definition of a power couple, then what is?

21. Sara Gilbert and Linda Perry

The Talk co-host Sara Gilbert and award-winning songwriter Linda Perry married in 2014 and still seem to be in their honeymoon phase – we dare you to find one photo in which they aren’t both smiling. Gilbert gave birth to the couple’s son, Rhodes Emilio Gilbert Perry, back in February, and the duo released the children’s album Deer Sounds that features Rhodes.

22. Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor

In December 2015, reports revealed that American Horror Story star Sarah Paulson was in a committed relationship with Two and a Half Men actress Holland Taylor. Before then, Taylor, who is 32 years older than Paulson, had admitted to being in a serious relationship with a woman, although she wouldn’t say who it was.

Cynthia Nixon Urges Us to Continue the Fight for LGBT Rights

Two-time Emmy-winner Cynthia Nixon – famed for starring in Sex in the City – has written an op-ed in Variety urging LGBT activists and their allies to continue the fight for marriage equality.

Even though the Friday Supreme Court decision to legalise gay marriage across America may seem like the ultimate victory, Nixon argues that the work is not done yet.

cynthia-nixon-21

The reason the LGBT movement has come so far is constant perseverance both in the face of adversity and after achieving community goals, she said.

Equality proponents knew they were going to win, but didn’t take it for granted for a moment; they worked, they organized, leaving no stone unturned. And to have the vote come from the general population was absolutely game-changing.

The important thing to remember going forward, though, is no outcome is ever 100% assured. We have to keep organizing like our lives depend on it.”

Nixon has been active in the fight for marriage equality and married a woman herself in 2012.

Cynthia Nixon

But she offers a note of caution, adding,

The important thing to remember going forward, though, is no outcome is ever 100% assured. We have to keep organizing like our lives depend on it.”

And the bisexual mother-of-two insists it’s now more important than ever to be true and honest about your sexuality if you’re gay, adding,

LGBT characters aren’t new; everybody has LGBT people in their family, and everybody needs to make the effort to come out in any and every way they can.

If people who are opposed to equality realized how many individuals they already like, admire or even love are LGBT, the battle would be over. It’s important to come out to our parents, children, co-workers, boss – you name it.”

Spotlight | Cynthia Nixon – Twice Loved, Twice Controversial

Sex and the City, and currently you can spot the actress in the NBC hit series Hannibal.

In 2012 the radiant mother-of-two came out publicly, married her long-term companion Christine Marinoni and fully embraced her new real life role as an LGBTQ rights activist.

cynthia-nixon-320Nixon’s portrayal of lawyer Miranda has empowered a generation of young career-oriented women, and that alone would be a reason for us to admire her, but now with her activist persona unfolding the KitschMix crew simply cannot help but fall in love with her. Unfortunately, many gay rights activists do not share our enthusiasm for Nixon’s work.

And why is that? Let me explain.

This is why we love Cynthia Nixon

After getting married, Nixon has been publicly outspoken about her sexual orientation (= lesbian or bisexual) and her views on marriage (= gender equal). She has campaigned for equality time after time and shown her support for various liberal political candidates.

Also, did you know that Nixon is a breast cancer survivor and a cancer activist, raising public consciousness on the sickness? Well, she is.

All of this considered, the following shortcoming might not seem like a big deal…

Still, this is why we (kind of) hate her

Our biggest problem with Nixon is that in 2012 she told New York Times interviewer that being gay is a choice. Or at least that for her it is. Ouch.

Nixon’s statement is the exact opposite of what gay activists around the world have been desperately trying to say for the past century or two. So, it’s understandable that a lot of activists freaked out after the interview.

We at KitschMix understand Nixon. She is bisexual and she does admit that being bi is not a choice for her. What she meant was that she’s chosen to limit herself to women – or rather, one woman – so she is de facto homosexual.

But we still kind of hate her. She could have become the patron saint of bisexual women everywhere, but instead she opted not to identify as one simply because ”nobody likes bisexuals”. Very smooth, Cynthia.

Here at KitschMix we think that no matter your sexuality – pansexual, bisexual, homosexual, born this way or making a lifestyle choice – in the end the world is a mix which we should all aim to appreciate.

Let us end with a recollection of Nixon’s most beloved roles

  1. Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City (1998–2004) is Nixon’s best known character. For this performance she also received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
  2. In 2005, to film critics’ great delight, Nixon played president’s wife Eleanor Roosevelt in the TV bio-drama Warm Springs.
  3. Nixon’s role as Becca in the theatrical play Rabbit Hole earned her the 2006 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.
