Why Sexual Assault Cases Often Go Unreported

I want to take a few minutes to talk about something that’s deeply personal to me, and to many other women (and men) across the world. It’s estimated that one in four women will be victims of sexual assault at some point in their lives, but most cases don’t even get reported to the police.

I don’t talk about my situation very often, because – even after all this time – it’s still painful to talk about. Starting in early 2014, and not ending until late 2015, I was the target of multiple sexual assaults by the same perpetrator. I’ve always considered myself a pretty strong woman – with three older brothers, I learned how to fight at a pretty young age, and I’ve always been able to stand up for myself when the situation called for it.

But not with my rapist.

I wasn’t able to talk about it with my family until it had already been going on for over a year (which was immediately before it stopped – thankfully my family took my side and took actions to protect me from him). They never pushed me to talk about it, or to press charges, or any of that… They simply made sure that he would never get in touch with me again.

That didn’t mean that I never saw him again. In fact, he was arrested once in the parking lot of my apartment building with a gun. I assume he was coming after me, but I obviously never asked him about this. (He was soon released – he hadn’t committed any verifiable crimes, beyond carrying an unlicensed weapon.) Another time, I was alone in a different parking lot, and he passed less than three feet in front of my car, making direct eye contact with me. All the previous incidents flashed through my mind all at once, and I panicked and ran inside to find my mother.

It wasn’t until 2017 that I had the courage to file a police report. I was informed that the statute of limitations for pressing charges had expired already, but I could file a report to help someone else’s case, if another report was filed against him in the future. This is when I found out that I wasn’t his only victim up until that point. The other victim was a 12-year-old girl, and while they couldn’t tell me any details about her report, it absolutely broke my heart knowing that I wasn’t his first, and I probably wouldn’t be his last, either.

The same person I told my story to, who told me that my report could help someone else, asked me, “Why didn’t you report this sooner? We might have actually been able to do something.” Well, in short, there are tons of reasons why someone might not report a sexual assault. Here are a few of mine.

They fear retaliation.

If you file a rape or sexual assault report, and the prosecutors determine that it’s “unfounded” (which happens far more often than we’d like to think about), the rapist is free – and they know that you have made a report against them. Considering their willingness to use force and violence to get their way, you can only imagine what happens when they feel someone has tarnished their reputation. In my case, I told family members – he was also a member of my family, by marriage – and he came after me once he was kicked out of his home.

The chance for justice is low.

Most sexual assault perpetrators who are taken to trial don’t serve even a single day in prison, despite a near-universal agreement that “rape is bad.” But rape isn’t the only form of sexual assault, and up until 2013, it was the only form of sexual assault that was considered bad enough to even warrant an investigation… And, even still, the laws are fuzzy about what “counts.” The statute of limitations exists, and although it varies from region to region, it’s hard to talk about, so many women choose not to.

The victims who do report are blamed for their own assault.

Rape culture penalizes the victims of these heinous crimes by asking what they did to provoke the attack. As far as I’m aware, this is the only crime in which the victim must prove their own innocence before their attacker has to prove theirs – and, in many cases, it’s impossible to prove that you “did enough” to prevent it. My rapist told me that I should “be grateful” that someone like him was “even interested” in someone like me. Never mind the fact that I had told him that I was not interested in him.

Their assaulter is stronger than they are.

Rape isn’t a “sex crime” – it’s a crime of power. No one sexually assaults someone who is stronger than them (although sexual harassment of someone bigger and stronger is a real possibility – but that’s not what we’re talking about here). In one instance, my rapist shoved me against a wall and told me, “It doesn’t really matter what you say – I’m stronger than you are.” Because his use of force was implied, rather than exercised, that instance wouldn’t have been considered a “real” rape, under many jurisdictions.

They black out and have memory gaps.

Blacking out is a psychological defense mechanism that lets us pretend a traumatic event never happened. This has been well-documented in other cases of PTSD, but when it happens to a sexual assault victim, it’s often twisted that the victim is false-reporting an event that never really happened. In many cases (mine included), the victim may even struggle to determine whether the rapes were real or imagined – there are still a few instances of assault that I’m not 100% clear on (such as one case where I woke to find my attacker already on top of and inside me).

They’re ashamed of what it says about them.

In a society where women who have sex are considered sluts, and women who don’t want sex are considered prudes, a woman who is forced into sex when she doesn’t want it is in a category all its own. My rapist told me once that I was “the best fuck” he’d ever had, and commenting on how wet I was at the time. (I was on my period, which was yet another reason for me to feel ashamed.)

They don’t want to disappoint their family.

In many cases, the perpetrator is a member of the victim’s family, either directly or indirectly. My rapist was my sister-in-law’s step-brother. I had known him for almost my entire life. Most people associate rapists with a stranger in a dark alley, and when the rapist is a little closer to home, there’s a chance that the victim will be blamed for “breaking up the family.” I am eternally grateful for my family members who stood by me during this time – I know of others who weren’t so lucky.

They didn’t do enough to stop it.

Even though I had learned how to fight from my brothers, all that knowledge went out the window when I was alone with him. I was pretty pudgy at the time (TBH, I still am, but that’s mostly unrelated) and he was very muscular. If I had fought back, he may have killed me. No, I don’t know this for sure, but I do know that he was arrested in 2008 for armed robbery and assault in a separate case. I don’t know if he had a knife or a gun with him any of the times he assaulted me, but I do know that he was strong enough to lift me off the ground, even though I weighed a good 30 pounds more than he did.

They’re gaslighted by their attacker.

Many rape victims are told that they must enjoy it, because they’re “so wet” when it happens. Truthfully, this happens as a defense mechanism by the body, in trying to make the rape as painless as possible (and it doesn’t always work). My rapist even told another family member, who suspected there was something going on, that the suspicion was stupid because, and I quote, “You know I don’t like fat girls.” When I heard that Trump’s defense against one sexual assault allegation was, “Just look at her! I don’t think so.” … I was horrified. Comments like that prove that sexual assault isn’t about sex at all – it’s about power and control.

Victims who do report are forced to relive the event.

When a lawyer represents an alleged rapist, it is their job to prove, without a doubt, that their client is innocent. Even when a woman files an informal report – one which doesn’t explicitly tarnish the accused’s name – the person taking the report needs as much of the information as possible, to prevent false accusations from getting through. I was questioned several times, over several days, just to see if they could catch me in a lie. There was only me, the police officer, and my sister-in-law in the room, and I cried with almost every question. If I had pushed my case to trial, I would have had to relive it again in front of dozens of people.

Their own (perceived) promiscuity will be held on trial, too.

When a rape allegation goes to trial, the victim is asked intrusive questions about how many sexual partners they’ve had, what they were wearing, and whether they were intoxicated. In almost every instance (that I can remember) with my rapist, I was wearing pajamas – because I was in my own home. The first time, I had been drinking to celebrate my first day in a new city. I was drunk for most of the other times, too, in an attempt to “wash” the traumatic event out of my mind. And, I wasn’t a virgin when the first rape happened – even though I had literally only had sex once before that. If I had ever had consensual sex with my rapist, it would be assumed that I wanted it this time, too.

There is often no physical evidence.

In my case, the physical evidence had “expired” – as I didn’t tell police until my sexual assault had finally come to an end. In other cases, the attacker may use a condom, and in the eyes of the law, if the rapist has time to use a condom, the victim has time to get away. (This isn’t always true.) In cases where the victim gives into the rape to prevent the situation from escalating – as I had on more than one occasion – it’s legally deemed “consensual,” even if there was a verbal threat of violence for non-compliance. You can’t usually prove what someone says to you, so if there aren’t any signs of a struggle, there’s no proof of force.

Because talking about sexual assault is really hard.

Even if none of the above were true in my situation, it would still be really, really hard to talk about my rape, because of the way our society is set up. Women are shunned for talking about sex, and feminists are shunned for letting themselves be victims. (As a side note, who “lets themselves” be victimized? But I digress.) Our society is set up to make it really, really difficult to talk about sexual assault – and we have convicted rapists doing very little time, in relation to how long their victims will live with the effects of what happened to them.

It’s been over ten years since my rapist left my life. I’ve moved six times, but I still worry that I’m going to run into him somewhere. It’s been over eight years since I reported my case to the police, and I’m still crying as I write this. I still have nightmares about what happened, and I still have a hard time doing certain consensual sexual activities with my partner. I still try to mask the pain in whatever ways I can – there’s whiskey in my coffee this morning just so I can be calm enough to write this. Obviously, the whiskey doesn’t fix the problem, but it makes it easier to talk about.

It doesn’t matter why you don’t report your rape or sexual assault – your reasons are just as valid as mine, and I want you to know that I’m right here with you. If you feel comfortable doing so, I invite you to share your story in the comments below. Just know that you are not alone, and you are a survivor.

Ellen: Trump Is Not Welcome On My Show Because He’s Dangerous To Gay People

As we al know, Ellen DeGeneres regularly hosted President Obama and his wife Michelle on her show during their time in office.

She has even hosted figures from across party lines – including John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

But TV host has admitted there is one guest who will never be welcome on her show – the current President of the United States, Donald Trump.

This week, Megyn Kelly sat down with DeGeneres to discuss her new NBC News show.

Ellen asked Kelly if she would ever invite President Donald Trump on her show.

“Definitely,” Kelly responded. “I mean, I would not say no to the sitting president of the United States.”

“Really?” Ellen responded, a bit surprised.

“Absolutely not. Would you?” Kelly asked.

“Yeah,” DeGeneres said, without a second thought, to huge cheers and applause. “I would not have him on the show.”

DeGeneres continued;

He is who he is and he gets enough attention and he has his Twitter account and he has ways to get his message across. There’s nothing I’m going to say to him that’s going to change him and I don’t want to give him a platform, because it just validates him.

And for me to have someone on the show, I have to at least admire them in some way. And I can’t have someone that I feel is not only dangerous – for the country, and for me personally as a gay woman – but to the world. He’s dividing all of us. I just don’t want him on the show.”

Model Teddy Quinlivan Comes Out As Transgender

If you don’t know who Quinlivan is by name, that’s okay. But we’re sure you’ve seen her a lot over the past year.

She’s walked hundreds of shows, starred in editorials from Vogue to LOVE to InStyle (and dozens more), modeled in the lookbooks of top tier designers like Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs, and worked with just about every photographer, makeup artist, and hair stylist you can imagine.

This week, in a candid CNN interview, the model capped off a busy New York Fashion Week by coming out as transgender

Quinlivan told CNN’s Clive Martin that she began her transition at 16, but decided to open up about her gender identity for the first time publicly because of “the political climate in the world right now ― particularly in the United States.”

Quinlivan said she felt “a great sense of urgency” given a recent spate of anti-trans violence, as well as the various ways in which President Donald Trump’s administration has rolled back rights for transgender Americans.

We made an amazing progression under the Obama administration, and since the new administration took office there’s been a kind of backlash. There’s been violence against transgender people ― particularly transgender women of color ― since before I even knew what transgender was. I’m very fortunate to be in [a] position [that] I never really thought I would be. It’s really important to take advantage of a time like this.”

Quinlivan – who has presented as a cisgender female since her modelling career took off – is also aware that, despite the fashion industry’s increasing acceptance toward people who don’t fit the stereotypical model mold, she may now be referred to as a transgender model, instead of simply a model.

If being transgender is something that gets attached to my name throughout my career, then it’s for a worthy cause. But I look forward to the day when it doesn’t matter. The transgender community needs more visibility. And with more visibility will come more acceptance.”

This week, Quinlivan also posted a short film detailing her transition on Instagram.

So far, the response has been positive. Designer Marc Jacobs told CNN that he “respects, admires and supports” Quinlivan for coming out.

Now more than ever it is vital that we pledge our allegiance to the LGBT community and use our voices to encourage and inspire acceptance, equality, understanding and love.”

Quinlivan joins a small but visible lineup of openly transgender models in high-end fashion, including Hari Nef and Andreja Pejić.

Lauren Jauregui Slams Trump Over His Transgender Ban And Stance On Charlottesville

Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui – who came out as bisexual in a powerful open letter to Donald Trump supporters – has slammed Trump as “disgusting”, following his decision to ban trans people from the military, and his reaction to white supremacists marching in Charlottesville.

Over the weekend, the singer picked up Best Pop Video at the MTV VMAs with the rest of her bandmates.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BYYZV1RF-mL

After the awards she said she had a responsibility to use her platform and fight back against Trump’s hatred, as demonstrated by his reluctance to condemn Nazis who chanted “f*** you faggots”.

On Fifth Harmony’s new self-titled album, a track called Bridges stands out as a clear anti-Trump protest song.

We’ve come way too far in our stories to build these walls and to blind ourselves,” the superstars sing, adding that “love’s worth fighting for. And I know the world can be cold, we can’t let it divide us”.

The key passage is “we build bridges / Bridges, not walls,” as the band uses the popular line from anti-Trump protests to stand against all of the administration’s divisive policies.

In an interview with Complex, Jauregui said that the song “alludes to everything going on right now and how we feel about it. It’s a really powerful message of positivity.”

I have a few million followers… if I’ve got all these young people watching me and caring about what I have to say, I should say something important, because I’m so passionate about it”.

He’s been inciting these things and instigating them and being indifferent about things that are super important to the way that we treat each other. We picked him as a leader and when people look at a leader, they look at influence.

His influence has literally incited neo-Nazism and all of these crazy things that we didn’t think could have a resurgence.

We disconnected ourselves so much from history and how immediate it was that we have lost touch with what’s right and what’s wrong.

We keep talking about: “Wow, this is so crazy that this is happening,” but no no, this is the way it goes. History repeats because we forget and we don’t move forward socially.

We’re too worried about money and paychecks and advancing those things to focus on who we are as humans.”

Jauregui said that the divisions created by Trump’s administration, for example between trans people and everyone else, were ridiculous.

When you really look at science, if two people fall on pavement, they’re both going to break bones because we’re all made up of the same s***.

So how is it that we divide ourselves over things as silly as skin tone and gender? How are we being so primitive in this day and age with all the technology and advancements we speak of?”

Following Trump’s announcement that trans people would be banned from serving in the military, Jauregui encouraged her followers to donate to the Transgender Law Centre.

Joint Chiefs To Troops: No Change To Military’s Policy On Transgender Service Members

Gen. Joseph Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, announced today that despite Donald Trump’s tweet to the contrary there has been no change yet to the military’s policy regarding transgender personnel.

In the message, which was sent to the chiefs of the military branches and senior enlisted leaders, Dunford said that the military will continue to “treat all of our personnel with respect.”

I know there are questions about yesterday’s announcement on the transgender policy by the President. There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President’s direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance.”

In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect. As importantly, given the current fight and the challenges we face, we will all remain focused on accomplishing our assigned missions.”

About 15,000 transgender troops are currently serving openly in the United States military. In June of 2016, then-Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced that already-serving transgender troops could come out without fear of discharge. He also established a plan to let openly transgender people enroll in the military within one year.

On Wednesday morning, however, Trump declared on Twitter that “the United States Government will not accept or allow” transgender individuals “to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.” Trump’s proclamation raised the real possibility that the thousands of transgender troops in uniform might be purged.

But Trump made his announcement without consulting the Pentagon. He reportedly did not even discuss the issue with his Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, who has strongly supported open transgender service in the past. Trump’s sudden decision threatened to jettison years of careful planning and preparation on the part of the military.

It also left military leaders in a lurch, caught between the president’s tweets and formal policy. The Navy has clarified that, at least for now, transgender troops may still serve and receive transition-related medical care; Dunford’s letter makes clear that remains official policy in every branch of the armed forces.

Yesterday Senator John McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee and a decorated war hero, criticized Trump’s social-media fiat.

The President’s tweet this morning regarding transgender Americans in the military is yet another example of why major policy announcements should not be made via Twitter.

The statement was unclear. The Department of Defense has already decided to allow currently-serving transgender individuals to stay in the military, and many are serving honorably today. Any American who meets current medical and readiness standards should be allowed to continue serving. There is no reason to force service members who are able to fight, train, and deploy to leave the military—regardless of their gender identity. We should all be guided by the principle that any American who wants to serve our country and is able to meet the standards should have the opportunity to do so—and should be treated as the patriots they are.

The Department of Defense is currently conducting a study on the medical obligations it would incur, the impact on military readiness, and related questions associated with the accession of transgender individuals who are not currently serving in uniform and wish to join the military. I do not believe that any new policy decision is appropriate until that study is complete and thoroughly reviewed by the Secretary of Defense, our military leadership, and the Congress.

The Senate Armed Services Committee will continue to follow closely and conduct oversight on the issue of transgender individuals serving in the military.

Trump, With A Single Tweet, Bans Transgender People From Serving In The US Military

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised to turn the page on years of Republican hostility to progress on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights by being an even better friend to the LGBTQ community than his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

He waved a rainbow flag. He denounced Clinton and her foundation for taking donations from ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia, and warned the gay community after the Orlando massacre that Clinton’s immigration stance would bring “more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs”.

Then just weeks after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis ordered a six month review on the Defense Department’s transgender policy, Trump announced over Twitter that the government will not accept or allow transgender individuals in the military.

The move came as a total surprise to most people, even in his own party.

Like the travel ban before it, it was quickly released and poorly thought out. Announced on Twitter, with no detail to follow, the futures of thousands of people were thrown into doubt. Would those already serving in the US and abroad be discharged? When would this happen and how? Press secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders couldn’t say on Wednesday, and threatened to shut down the press briefing when reporters kept asking questions.

Major advocacy groups depicted Mr Trump’s pronouncement as an appeal to the portion of his conservative base that opposes the recent civil-rights gains by the LGBT community.

Sarah Kate Ellis of GLAAD said:

President Trump today issued a direct attack on transgender Americans, and his administration will stop at nothing to implement its anti-LGBTQ ideology within our government – even if it means denying some of our bravest Americans the right to serve and protect our nation.

Today further exposed President Trump’s overall goal to erase LGBTQ Americans from this nation. Trump has never been a friend to LGBTQ Americans, and this action couldn’t make that any more clear.”

The Democrats said:

Right this moment, around the world, brave transgender service members are protecting the American people – including Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

While the White House claims to be celebrating ‘American Heroes’ week, the president and vice president are shoving real American patriots back in the closet and putting our nation’s security at risk.

Donald Trump said he would protect LGBTQ people, but today’s decision to ban transgender Americans from serving in the military proves his promise was another bald-faced lie.

Democrats stand with the transgender community and we will fight this administration’s bigotry tooth-and-nail. Those who defend our right to live freely should be able to serve freely.

This cowardly statement by Donald Trump shames our nation and its history of advancing diversity in our military – from the integration of African-Americans into the military by President Truman to President Obama’s ending of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell – and it is an insult to the millions of Americans who have courageously served our nation.”

The Human Rights Campaign attacked the White House for a “deeply troubling and patently unpatriotic assault on military families”.

The group added:

[Trump and Pence should] be working to ensure all service members and their families are getting the support and resources they need and deserve, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.”

Chad Griffin added:

Today Donald Trump has proven himself as unpatriotic as he is unfit to serve as Commander in Chief. He has put a target on the backs of the more than 15,000 transgender troops proudly serving in our military.

This heinous and disgusting action endangers the lives of American service members, undermines military readiness and makes our country less safe.

It is also the latest effort by Trump and Mike Pence to undo our progress and drag LGBTQ people back into the closet by using our lives as political pawns.”

The President famously dodged the draft four times during the Vietnam war, and has never served in the military.

Trump’s new ban is reminiscent of rules that banned gay people from openly serving in the military.

Backstreet Boy AJ McLean has made a bold statement, saying he hopes both of his daughters  (currently four years old and two months) turn out to be gay. (Refinery29).

He told Refinery29:

I will also go on record by saying, and I told my wife this, I hope that both of my daughters are gay because that takes all p***s out of my life — I do not want to deal with boys ever. But if I do have to, they’re going to have to go through quite a lot of trials to go through me because my daughters are my life.”

I co-wrote and star in a new film called ‘Duck Butter,’ which opens later this year,” she said. “I love that it was written for a man and a woman, but we couldn’t find the right guy, so now it happens to star two women [as lovers]. I used to be less outspoken. But as a woman, an Arab-American, and a member of the LGBTQ community, I have to use whatever voice I have. There’s no more delicacy in being quiet.

Ellen DeGeneres Says Donald Trump Is Not Welcome On Show

Ellen DeGeneres will not be inviting Donald Trump to her talk show.

The TV host shared her feelings about the current President of the United States with Today‘s Matt Lauer on Friday.

As for why she will not interview Trump: ‘Because I’m not going to change his mind.’

DeGeneres came out as gay 20 years ago and is active in social causes including UNICEF, breast cancer and PETA.

She won a People’s Choice Award in 2016 for her humanitarian work.

We need to look at someone else who looks different than us and believes in something that we don’t believe in and still accept them and still let them have their rights.”

DeGeneres said she had met Trump in the early days of her Emmy-winning talk show as they filmed a bit with him as the host of Celebrity Apprentice. She even gave him baby gifts in an episode from 2006.

DeGeneres has had other notable political figures on her show in the past including President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders.

In the interview with Today, DeGeneres also reflected on her ground-breaking, yet difficult, decision to come out of the closet.

There were death threats and that was negative. The biggest thing was I lost my career. For three years I could not work, was not offered one thing. I was running out of money, and I didn’t know if I was going to work again. And then I just thought I gotta do something about this. It taught me compassion. It taught me that I was strong enough to start all over again, and it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”

Trump’s Long-Lost Lesbian Muslim Daughter Is Finally Speaking Out

Ayesha Trump is finally speaking out about her father, Donald J. Trump.

As a half-Pakistani lesbian Muslim, she feels it is finally time to tell the world who she is and to reveal her father’s own hypocrisy.

As much as we all wish this were true, Ayesha Trump is the fictional creation of Fawiza Mirza, a Chicago-based comedian.

Mirza, who is a lesbian Muslim in real life, grew frustrated at Trump’s homophobic, misoygnisitic, Islamophobic comments. “What can a little brown girl do?” she asked herself. “Well, I can make something. I can do comedy.”

She has created a twenty-minute satirical exposé on Ayesha Trump. This intense interview follows the style of many groundbreaking documentaries, complete with close-ups on Ayesha playing with a Trump-Gandhi coloring book, dramatic voiceovers, and nail-biting Gotcha! questions like this one.

INTERVIEWER: How many terrorists are in your family?

(Ayesha counts.)

AYESHA: Zero.

INTERVIEW: Why were you counting?

AYESHA: Oh, sorry. There are no terrorists in my Pakistani family. But there are at least three terrorists on my Trump side.

Will comedy like this stop Trump’s Islamophobic legislature? Not directly. But Ayesha has a way of turning the interviewer’s questions and expectations on their head – even though she is a bit ditzy herself (inherited from her father).

Another gem of a line:

INTERVIEWER: Do you have any aspirations?

AYESHA: The only aspiration I have is the sweat that comes out of my body. That’s how I aspire.

Unlike Ayesha, who is only now coming forward, Mirza has been an openly queer powerhouse on the Internet for quite sometime. She often posts videos talking about human rights, Islam and coming out. Before starring as Ayesha, she created hilarious webseries such as Kam Kardashian, which follows the exploits of the long-lost lesbian sister from the famous family, and Brown Girl Problems, which details the lives of quirky South Asian women.

They Key to Defeating Donald Trump? Lesbian Theatre

In the two months since Trump was elected President, America has become even more dangerous for the LGBT community.

In response, queer women have protested and marched. They’ve run for office. They’ve gotten magical powers.

And now they’re hosting radical theatre pop-up shows.

The experimental theatre project Sanctuary is a reality-disrupting venture that puts LGBT people and other minority artists at the center of art creation.

Sanctuary is a home for queer, feminist, POC, and other marginalized voices to respond through art and action to the incoming administration and the onslaught of attacks against progress, decency, and the safety of our community. We are creating Sanctuary to bring together artists and individuals in a coordinated series of programming to process, grieve, organize, learn, and ultimately unite for a brighter future.

This ongoing festival kicked off with an Inaugural Ball that lined up with the less awesome ball in Washington D.C. during inauguration weekend.

How does it work? Over the next two months, Sanctuary will showcase plays written by queer and minority artists. Selections include:

Pussy Sludge: A lesbian achieves value in society by menstruating crude oil.

Holding – A Queer Black Love Story: If society doesn’t want you because you’re black, female and gay, what does it mean for you to love yourself and find love in someone else?

Revolution: In a dystopian future that looks chillingingly like everyday life, cops, activists, clergymen and soldiers struggle with oppressive systems.

Next Nation: A series of narratives prove that young gay men need to stand up for the rights of all.

La Sirene: Freedom was born in Cuba.

That’s just the beginning of the festival. Other works include “A History of Nasty Women,” “Black Girl Magic Show,” and many more.

Sanctuary’s creators hope to spark dialogue among groups of people, Republican and Democrat, privileged and oppressed. However, their main goal is to create a space of community for queer people during Trump’s presidency.

Says the show’s creator,

If they’re feeling lost, if they’re feeling scared,” Salberg says, “they know that almost any night of the week there will be a community of people who are waiting there with open arms.”

LGBT Group In London Drops Solidarity Banner Over Vauxhall bridge

A London LGBT group has hung a banner reading “Queer Solidarity Smashes Borders” over Vauxhall Bridge on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration. The protesters of the group released smoke in rainbow colours, and the demonstration attracted many.

The banner hanging was part of a bigger, worldwide movement that took place on the 20th of January 2017, the day when Donald Trump was sworn into office. The movement is called “Bridges Not Walls” and started from the UK as a collective demonstration of solidarity to minority groups, women and others threatened by Trump’s racist, sexist and homophobic agenda, as well as a protest against the rise of right wing politics in many countries.

There have been over 250 banner drops all over the world where citizens, campaigners and activist groups have gathered to hang a banner over a famous bridge, and then take a photo to upload on the program’s Dropbox and raise visibility and solidarity on those issues. There is a video on the official website that shares the slogan: “They say build walls but we say build bridges.” Participants have registered their event on the action map so people in their area can find and join them.

The initiative started by Hastings ice cream man and homeless shelter worker Will Stevens after the result of the US election, in order to phrase the anxiety of the people who have directly been threatened by Trump’s upcoming presidency.

Spokesperson of Bridges not Walls, Nona Hurkmans, said: “On Trump’s inauguration day we’re taking action to show our support for groups under attack – here in the UK, across Europe and in the USA – and to reject the rise of a dangerous and divisive far rights politics. We won’t let the politics of hate peddled by the likes of Donald Trump take hold. What happens next is up to us and by standing together we can show that the rhetoric of fear and hate have no place in our society.”

Chief Executive of Migrants Organise, Zrinka Bralo, said: “We stand in solidarity with colleagues and friends in the US. We have all read reports of an increase in hate attacks. The emergence of neo-Nazis and white supremacists is scary; the attempt to normalize what is going on is even scarier. We have the responsibility to fight against attempts to divide us. Our shared values of justice, respect for dignity, human rights and the truth must shine through these difficult times.”

The movement has spread as far as Ethiopia, Cambodia, Australia, the USA and many European cities. More than 150 of the banner drops have taken place in the UK, including London’s most iconic bridges. A 25m big banner reading “Bridges not Walls” was planned to be dropped from Tower Bridge in London. Other signs include “No silence on UK violence #BlackLivesMatter” at London Bridge, “What happens next is up to us” at Millenium Foot Bridge, a banner against islamophobia at Southwark Bridge, one for the rights of immigrants and refuges on Westminster bridge, and a Women’s rights banner on Waterloo bridge.

Among the LGBT activists at Vauxhall bridge was the comedian Joe Sutherland, who sent a message of solidarity to all LGBT people anxious about their futures worldwide. He said: “As a queer comedian it’s my job to find funny ways to deal with a bad situation. But what we’re facing now isn’t funny, it’s terrifying. The dirty tactics of mainstream media and politicians in UK, Europe and the USA are trying to divide us into smaller and smaller groups and make us fear each other. I’m here as part of my LGBTQ+ community to show that we stand with others who feel threatened: migrants, muslims, women, people of colour and disabled people. If we support each other then we don’t have to be afraid.”

#DressLikeAWoman: Trump Causes Twitter Storm With Sexist Dress Code

News website Axios were informed by an anonymous source that women who work for the Trump campaign feel pressured to wear dresses. Mike Allen cited this claim in Axios newsletter.

According to the report, male employees “need to have a certain look”, but Trump didn’t really like the suit his press secretary, Sean Spicer, wore for his first briefing, and expects his male employees, according to the same source, to wear a tie, either a Trump one, or try to get away with Brooks Brothers and Armani.

Well, you can also get away if you’re Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon.

As we read in Allen’s citation, women who work for Trump are supposed to “look neat and orderly” even if they’re in jeans, even if they’re not in positions that are going to get much coverage or have to attend “glitzy events”.

Michael Allen refused to give further details when he was asked to this Friday.

But whether “dress like a woman” were Trump’s actual words to refer to him expecting more feminine attire by his female employees or not, it’s quite safe to assume that it very clearly characterizes his overall view when it comes to women and their reduction to their appearance.

After all, he does have a history of rating them on a scale from 1 to 10, of insulting women who criticized him based on their appearance, and of hurrying to get back to people who used arguments against his own appearance, like his hair or the size of his hands.

Everybody knows that he also happens to be an openly sexist bigot, working actively to ruin the lives of whoever is not a cis straight white Christian man, so yeah.

It makes much sense that uproar was caused on Twitter after the news for the White House dress code instructions became known, especially after 8 years of Barack and Michelle Obama establishing a more relaxed attitude towards the dress code that people in the White House were supposed to follow.

Twitter Users used the hashtag #dresslikeawoman to go a step further from the problematic character of narcissistic Trump directing extremely important real life issues based on appearance as if he’s still part of a glamorous reality show. Women on Twitter tried to question what it means to dress like a woman.

According to Maddie Soper (@misformaddie), a handy guide on how to #dresslikeawoman includes: “1. Identify as a woman” and “2. Get dressed”.

People posted pictures of accomplished women, such as astronauts, politicians in the parliament, pastors, judges, and Olympic champions, in the attire of their work.

Feminists from the navy or the army in camo suits, firefighters, surgeons and racecar drivers, all in their according suits, flooded the internet, accompanied by sarcastic comments directing Trump’s sexist, demeaning behaviour towards women.

As Erin Coulehan writes, even the mainstream, high fashion the rules of which Trump believes he leads his life by, considers such notions about women and their appearance outmoded.

I could gush about how it’s men’s fashion week in New York right now, and designers like Alejandro Gomez Palomo are challenging masculinity in sartorial form through androgynous genius to showcase the myriad facets of menswear to include looks distinctly feminine. I could discuss how forward-thinking it is the 24-year-old designer doesn’t really see the point in going along with gender binaries because that would be boring and it’s way more fulfilling to shake things up.”

Unfortunately, it is up to a man of priorities much more ridiculous and problematic than those that of my horny, paw-licking cat has at the moment, to govern the country that influences the entire planet more than any other. And I wish I could finish this article with a note of optimism, but I have no more left.

So the only thing I can remind myself and everyone reading this, is that we need to stand in absolute solidarity with all our sisters (and not just cisters) in the US, and take in mind not only their gender, but all different intersecting oppressions they might be facing through dark times.

Trump Claims That His Immigration Ban Helps Lesbians. He Is Very, Very Wrong.

It’s difficult to be queer. It’s even more difficult to be queer and Muslim, especially if you’re a person of color. Yet Trump claims that his blanket ban on travelers from Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, Libya and Iran does queer people a favor.

Trump cited LGBT rights as one of his reasons for the ban. He claimed that people from those seven countries “would oppress members of [marginalized] gender or sexual orientation.”

The assumption is, of course, that all people coming from these countries are Muslim, and that all Muslims are intolerant of LGBT people. He is completely erasing the growing population of Muslims who openly identify as transgender or queer.

The Advocate puts it well:

What happens now to the lesbian asylum seeker in search of a semblance of safety in the U.S.? What happens to the bisexual student who came here on a visa and now does not know if they can return? What happens to the parents of a transgender child, who can no longer come to the U.S. even to visit?”

In short, Donald Trump is not doing us any favors. He’s hurting members of the LGBT community hoping to find freedom in the United States, and he’s tearing apart the families of queer Muslims by barring them from entry.

Trump acts as if all non-Americans are heathens swarming on the United States in order to steal our resources, bomb our cities and impose their beliefs. He ignores the reason why so many people from these countries are traveling to the U.S. – the United States has destroyed many parts of their countries.

The U.N. recently confirmed that in Yemen, U.S. drone strikes have killed more innocent civilians than al Queda has. And the U.S. has been dragging the Iraq War out for nine long years, which makes it the third-longest war in U.S. history after Vietnam and Afghanistan.

What happens when you go to war with a country for a decade? You leave that country in ruins and force the citizens to become refugees – refugees that the U.S. is now denying entry.

So what can you do? Find a protest near you and fight back!

New Press Secretary Unsure Whether Trump Will Undo Obama’s LGBT Executive Order

Sean Spicer, the press secretary for the Trump administration said yesterday that he doesn’t know if Trump is planning to overturn Barack Obama‘s executive order banning anti-LGBT discrimination among federal contractors.

This week, Spicer responded to a question from the Washington Blade in a press briefing, saying:

I don’t know on that one. I have to get back to you on that. I don’t think that we’ve gotten that far in the list of executive orders, but I’d be glad to get back to you.”

When pressed about executive orders about LGBT rights in general, Spicer responded,

Again, it’s not — I just don’t know the answer. I’ll try to get back to you on that.”

The new President has never released a policy plan on LGBT issues, and also has no policy plan on HIV/AIDS.

He also failed to detail policies on either issue during his election campaign.

However, Trump said he planned to overturn many of Obama’s executive orders. He did not specifically mention any executive order related to LGBT rights.

Madonna Says Speech At Women’s Rally ‘Taken Wildly Out Of Context’

While taking part in a protest march in Washington DC on Saturday, Madonna said she had thought “an awful lot about blowing up the White House”.

Trump supporters reacted angrily, claiming that there would have been uproar if such a comment had been made about former president Barack Obama.

Madonna has now said her remarks were taken “wildly out of context”.

I am not a violent person, I do not promote violence and it’s important people hear and understand my speech in it’s entirety rather than one phrase.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPk8lY7AOTn/

She added she was trying to express there are two ways to respond to Donald Trump’s election – with hope or with anger – and said she wanted to start a “revolution of love”.

After Madonna made the comments, White House chief of staff Reince Priebus told Fox News:

One of the singers said she wanted to blow up the White House. I mean, can you imagine saying that about President Obama?”

Kellyanne Conway, a senior White House aide, described Madonna’s speech as “destructive”.

She also drew attention to some reports that the secret service had been made aware of the singer’s comments.

Ellen Page Confronts Homophobic Preacher At D.C. Protest

Ellen Page – who is in D.C. for some inaugural events (including the Women’s March this weekend) – confronted a homophobic preacher during Donald Trump’s swearing in ceremony.

Page confronted the man who wore a t-shirt worn, which said that LGBT people are “worse than animals”. During the debate he continued to preach that homosexuality is “demonic”.

Page kept her cool, despite being talked over by the preacher, who abruptly left.

Trump Administration Delete LGBT, Climate Change Issues From New White House Website

Day 1 and it begins!!!

Back in December, Trump reportedly gave “assurances” that he will take action to undermine laws that are seen as protecting the rights of gay people in the US.

Sadly almost all of Trump’s cabinet, including his Vice President Mike Pence, share anti-LGBT views.

Under Obamas leadership marriage equality became a reality in all 50 States, the US army set out to lift the ban on transgender service personnel, and in 2014 he issued an executive order banning LGBT discrimination by Federal contractors across the board.

Unfortunately, that looks like it could be set to change.

As the old administration departs the White House, change is underway.

Trump’s new staff have begun to take over offices, Twitter accounts and the White House’s official website.

It’s on this website that a certain page has been deleted.

The whitehouse.gov site, which previously featured a page on Obama and his relationship with the progress of the LGBT community, now shows up with a “page not found” message under whitehouse.gov/lgbt.

This is a worrying sign for America’s LGBT community, and the change hasn’t gone unnoticed.

https://twitter.com/AntonioArellano/status/822527402236637184

The Department of Labor’s page also no longer includes a page on Advancing LGBT Workplace Rights. Pages for civil rights, climate change, and National HIV/AIDS Strategy, and the White House Counsel on Women and Girls have also been removed

Scarlett Johansson, America Ferrera, Amy Schumer, & Lea DeLaria To Participate In Women’s March On Washington

Hollywood will be turning out in force for the women’s march on Washington set to follow Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Actress America Ferrera will attend the march along with Amy Schumer, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand and Zendaya.

In a statement, Ferrara said

Since the election, so many fear that their voices will go unheard. As artists, women, and most importantly dedicated Americans, it is critical that we stand together in solidarity for the protection, dignity and rights of our communities.”

Johansson, criticizing the incoming administration for “attacking” reproductive rights, said she would participate to “make my voice heard and stand up for what I believe in.”

Organizers expect more than 100,000 people to turn out for the march on Jan. 21, one day after Trump’s inauguration.

Chelsea Handler will lead a sister march in Park City, Utah, one of more than 150 solidarity marches planned around the country and the world that day.

Others who plan to participate in the Washington march include Uzo Aduba, Lea DeLaria, Diane Guerrero, Margo Jefferson, Hari Nef and Constance Wu.

A number of other celebrities will either participate in the march or express solidarity with the marchers in other ways, organizers said, including Katy Perry, Julianne Moore, Cher and Debra Messing

Is Your State Pro-LGBT?

2016 was both the best and the worst year for LGBT rights. On one hand, the country elected Donald Trump, who’s been installing an anti-LGBT cabinet. On the other hand, more than 500 pro-LGBT bills were introduced to Congress.

Let’s take a look at the good and the bad with help from Mother Jones.

The Good

Massachusetts strengthened their nondiscrimination laws in order to allow transgender people to use the bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity.

Governors in four states – Montana, Louisiana, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania – signed executive orders in order to protect LGBT state employees.

In the wake of the Pulse Nightclub Shooting, twice as many hate crime laws were proposed in 2016 as in 2015.

In Hawaii, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan and Pennsylvania, it is now illegal for healthcare insurers to refuse to insure transgender patients.

Six states passed bills to prevent suicide, especially in children and teenagers, and to prevent harassment in schools.

Vermont and New York joined the small but growing list of states that outlaw conversion therapy.

The Bad

North Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina. The House Bill 2 (HB-2) struck down antidiscrimination protections for LGBT employees and, most infamously, demanded that transgender people use the bathrooms that correspond to their biological sex.

Despite the public opposition to the bill and the fact that the governor who pushed the bill through has been swiftly booted out of office, 14 other states have propped up their own bathroom bills. The list includes even blue states such as New York and Washington. Track the progress of those bills here.

252 anti-LGBT laws were proposed in 2016. Thankfully, only 8 of them passed.

What’s Left to Be Done?

In eight states, teachers aren’t allowed to mention anything related to LGBT issues.

In nineteen states, transgender people are ineligible for Medicaid.

In more than two dozen states, LGBT people are not protected by antidiscrimination legislation in housing, employment, education and public accommodation.

Broken But United: The LGBTQ Community In A Trump Presidency

I will remember that morning forever. I thought I was stuck in a dream when I woke up and anxiously checked my phone expecting a great celebration and sigh of relief when I saw Hillary was the new president.

As you are aware, this story doesn’t end with a celebration nor a sigh of relief, but rather a state of disbelief and denial.

How could the majority of American voters decide my rights as a queer immigrant woman do not matter?

As I reached out to my American friends, one sentence echoed higher than the outrage and anger, “I am here for ýou.”

Although we feel broken and defeated at this point, I can feel support and love pouring in our community. More than just protests, we are here for each other, supporting our brothers and sisters like never before.

And this sentiment transcends borders and sexual orientation. Throughout Europe, Latin America, Canada, and all around the globe, you can feel alliance and outreach not only between the queer community but also from our straight allies, parents and friends.

Although fear and doubt may cast a dark cloud on queer Americans, we will stand tall and proud once again.

We are the “nasty women”; the ones who fought for our rights and lost; the ones who will not let sexism, homophobia, and racism beat us. And most importantly, we are the ones here for you.

As I read that LGBTQ suicide hotlines blew up as the news of Trump’s election spread, I knew I needed to take action.

And although a simple post may seem frivolous, I knew I had to share my support with those in need.

Here are some helpful contacts for U.S. queer people in need:

Transgender suicide hotline: 877-565-8860;

Trevor Lifeline: 1-866-488-7386;

Suicide Lifelines per statehttp://www.suicide.org/suicide-hotlines.html;

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline :1-800-273-8255

The GLBT National Help Center: Hotline: 1-888-843-4564; Youth Talkline: 1-800-246-7743

We’ll get through this together. We may be now feel broken, but we will always be united.

Queer Radical Books To Read If You’re Worried About The Trump Presidency

Queer (In)Justice: The Criminalization of LGBT People in the United States

Do you remember the villain “Him” from The Powerpuff Girls? Him was a genderbending “monster” who looked like the devil, had a male body and wore feminine clothing. Him’s main transgression was the unwillingness to conform to traditional gender roles, and yet people called Him “The Man Without a Name,” “The Evilest of Evils,” “The Cruelest of Cruel” and “King of Darkness.”

The media is constantly portraying gay, transgender and genderqueer people as villains who spread disease, corrupt children and erode society. This book asks, “Why?” By using true stories, human rights information and scientific data, the authors indict the United States for indicting the LGBT community.

Seeing as the Vice President-elect Mike Pence has a history of criminalizing gay people, this book is a must-read if you live in the United States.

Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches

Black lesbian poet and feminist activist Audre Lorde is a prophet for intersectional lesbians. If you’re feeling marginalized on multiple sides – such as if you’re a person of color, if you’re an immigrant, if you’re poor – then Audre’s notions of being a “Sister Outsider” will ring true for you. Lorde tackles sexism, racism, ageism, homophobia, and class in this slim book.

This book is just as important today as when it was written in 1984, and it may help you get through the difficult four years ahead.

Sexuality and Socialism: History, Politics and Theory of LGBT Liberation

This intense book will have you highlighting every page and questioning society as you know it. Sexuality and Socialism discusses:

  • the roots of LGBT oppression
  • the construction of sexual and gender identities
  • the history of the gay movement
  • and “how to unite the oppressed and exploited to win sexual liberation for all.”

Unlike many books about sexuality and theory, Sexuality and Socialism is easy to read, because it was written for average LGBT people who just want to know why they keep facing oppression.

Reviewers compared the author, Sherry Wolf, to Lady Gaga, and said that this book was “surprisingly funny.”

The more powerful statement in the book: “What humans have constructed, they can tear down.”

Sia, Pink, Lady GaGa, & Over THREE MILLION People Petition For The Electoral College To Make Hillary Clinton President

If you’re still in shock following Donald Trump’s surprise Presidential win, then do we have some good news for you.

Despite Hillary Clinton already conceding the race to Trump, there’s actually a petition going around that could legally make her the Commander-in-Chief after all!

As things currently stand, Donald will become President of the United States once the Electoral College casts its official votes for the Republican on December 19.

However, an online petition has been set up to demand the Electoral College, who still have to cast their votes to cement the billionaire’s presidency, go against the will of the people and elect Clinton president instead.

The petition on Change.org is demanding the Electoral College, which is made up of party members elected by local people to represent them in Congress, take advantage of this constitutional loophole.

The petition, which was created by Elijah Berg, states:

Mr. Trump is unfit to serve. His scapegoating of so many Americans, and his impulsivity, bullying, lying, admitted history of sexual assault, and utter lack of experience make him a danger to the Republic.”

He added:

Hillary won the popular vote. The only reason Trump “won” is because of the Electoral College.”

Already 3.3 MILLION people have given their signatures to urge the small body of electors to follow the popular vote.

Celebrities such as Lady GaGa, Sia, Pink, and Laverne Cox have already all given their signatures too.

https://twitter.com/Sia/status/796917332601880576

https://twitter.com/Pink/status/796888179957579777

The petition, which urges electors to ignore their states’ vote, looks set to reach the 4.5 million signatures mark in the coming days.

Even after the electorate has voted, the Electoral College are given another vote to determine who becomes president because of a loophole in the US Constitution.

The Electoral College is set to meet on December 19 and should an elector vote against the will of the people – known as going ‘faithless’ – then it could have a huge sway on who becomes the next US leader.

Going faithless is very rare, however, with the most recent faithless vote coming in 2004 when an anonymous Minnesota voter decided not to vote for Democrat John Kerry and instead cast a vote for Kerry’s running mate, John Edwards.

Faithless voters have not yet managed to reverse an election result, but following the uproar caused by Trump’s election win there is a slim chance that Hillary Clinton could sneak into the White House.

Ellen DeGeneres Addresses Presidential Election: ‘We’re Far More Alike Than We Are Different’

Ellen DeGeneres addressed the 2016 presidential election on Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, in remarks that were actually taped before Donald Trump was officially elected president.

Despite the divided attitudes heading into the election, DeGeneres chose to see the best in America and the people who live here.

People have been very passionate about this race. And I think it’s because we all love our country — we just have different ideas about what’s best for it, which is part of what makes America great.

And I believe we can all come together because if you take away the labels, you realize we’re far more alike than we are different.”

hillary-clinton-ellen-degeneres-2015-billboard-650

DeGeneres openly supported Clinton, attending fundraisers and interviewing on her show several times.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a liberal or if you’re conservative, we’ve all passed out watching Netflix and woke up not knowing what episode we’re on, what season we’re on, whose couch we’re on.”

DeGeneres ended her monologue with a message of hope and perseverance.

What I’m trying to say is that we have so much in common, our differences actually make us stronger. We need to have the kindness and respect for one another. Here’s where I make the exception: the people that leave the shopping carts in the middle of your parking spot. Out of the country. Kick them out of the country. Bring the shopping cart back!”

Thousands March To Protest Trump’s Presidential Victory

Less than 24 hours after it was called that Donald Trump had defeated Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President of the United States, demonstrators have been held in several US cities.

Many shouted the slogan “Not my president”. Others burned orange-haired effigies of the businessman.

In New York, thousands – including Lady Gaga – marched on Trump Tower, attacking Trump’s policies on immigration, gay rights and reproductive rights.

https://twitter.com/TheAnonnMessage/status/796561942324383745

Gaga, a prominent supporter of Clinton, was photographed protesting outside Trump Tower in New York City in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The star stood on a sanitation truck, holding a sign reading ‘Love trumps hate.’ A Trump Tower clock can be seen in the background.

Thousands of people also poured into the streets of downtown Los Angeles, and hundreds of them later spilled onto the 101 Freeway, shutting down traffic as they forcefully denounced Trumps victory.

In Chicago, crowds blocked the entrance to Trump Tower, chanting: “No Trump, No KKK, No Fascists USA”

In Portland, Oregon, demonstrators temporarily closed an interstate highway.

In Washington DC, protesters held a candlelit vigil.

Demonstrations also took place in Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle and San Francisco, among other cities.

Trump is due to meet current White House incumbent Barack Obama for talks aimed at ensuring a smooth transition.

Mr Obama – who had branded Mr Trump “unfit” for office and campaigned against him – urged all Americans to accept the result of Tuesday’s election.

We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country.”

Defeated Mrs Clinton also told supporters Mr Trump had to be given a “chance to lead”.

How Will Donald Trump’s Victory Affect Our LGBT Rights?

Many of us have woken up this morning to the news that Donald Trump is the president-elect.

But what does a Trump presidency mean for same-sex marriage, and LGBT rights in America?

When Trump takes office in January, the GOP will be in full control of both the executive and the legislature for the first time since 2005.

Trump has flip-flopped on his views on LGBTQ rights since he first contemplated a run for the presidency in 2000.

Sixteen years ago, he declared “the institution of marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

Since then, Trump has continued to state that he does not believe in “non-traditional marriages,” implying that he doesn’t support LGBTQ rights in general.

He definitely doesn’t agree with the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision to make same-sex marriage available across the country, as he’s stated that he believes the question should be left up to the states.

Trup told Fox News in January, “I wish that it was done by the state. I don’t like the way they ruled“:

I disagree with the Supreme Court from the standpoint they should have given the state — it should be a states’ rights issue. … This is a very surprising ruling. And I — I can see changes coming down the line, frankly. But I would have much preferred that they ruled at a state level and allowed the states to make those rulings themselves. … If I’m elected I would be very strong in putting certain judges on the bench that maybe could change thing, but they have a long way to go.

During the Presidential debates, Trump confirmed that he would appoint justices in the mould of the late Antonin Scalia, who opposed the decriminalisation of sodomy and penned a blistering dissent against the equal marriage ruling.

A public shortlist of Supreme Court candidates released by Mr Trump featured only anti-LGBT conservatives.

Trump has also pledged to sign the ‘First Amendment Defence Act’ to permit religious homophobic discrimination.

His running mate Mike Pence has already confirmed a plan to dismantle Barack Obama’s protections for LGBT people, as part of an ‘immediate’ review of executive orders issued by President Obama.

Pence previously suggested that HIV prevention funding be drained in order to fund state-sponsored ‘gay cure’ therapy, and earlier this year appeared unable to answer when asked whether it should be legal to fire people because of their sexuality.

Trump and Pence could also look to repeal Barack Obama’s 2014 executive order that extended LGBT anti-discrimination protections to federal contractors.

Likewise, the Republican victory confirms that the Democrat-backed ‘Equality Act’ – a bill that would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to finally outlaw discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation on a federal level – is now effectively dead in the water.

Trump has affirmed his support for local state anti-transgender laws, though he does not have a declared national policy on the issue.

Yet despite all of this, Trump has promised to protect the LGTBQ community from terrorism – as he declared during a speech after the Orlando shooting… whatever that kind of promise means.

Given his inflammatory statements about depriving Muslim Americans and women of their rights, you’ve got to wonder whether he’d actually keep his word on any promise to protect queer individuals.

President-elect Trump will take office in January.

Hillary Clinton: “Equal Rights And Rule of Law Must Be Defended”

Speaking in New York, Hillary Clinton – who thought she would wake up Wednesday as the first woman president-elect but crashed to a stunning election defeat to Donald Trump – made her first comments since conceding defeat in the US presidential election.

We must accept this result. Donald Trump is going to be president. We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.”

Hillary Clinton also said the peaceful transfer of power is a cornerstone of US democracy, and urges her supporters to approach the Trump presidency “with an open mind”.

I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans.”

She also said, the US owes an “enormous debt of gratitude” to outgoing President Barack Obama and the First family.

2d638254-c7ca-42ec-ba28-4d734f839c61

She also addresses the women who backed her to become America’s first woman president:

Nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion.”

And to the “little girls” of America, she says:

Never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every opportunity.”

Here’s How The Outcome Of The Presidential Race Could Implicate Your LGBT Rights

It’s countdown time to the presidential election and although some LGBT rights are now the laws of the land, there are other battles going on related to civil rights and non-discrimination protections for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.

There are two important questions in particular, on both sides of the argument.

What sort of access should transgender people have to public bathrooms? Are the advances for LGBT rights infringing on the religious freedom of some Americans?

Hillary Clinton is a firm supporter of LGBT rights and she has endorsed the Equality Act which is a proposed federal law that would provide comprehensive protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Donald Trump says he would be a better president for gays, yet major LGBT-rights groups strongly oppose him. There are many reasons for this. He has hesitated at endorsing same-sex marriage.

He has an evangelical advisory board that includes major opponents who disprove advances in LGBT rights.

Running mate Mike Pence, who is Indiana’s governor, signed a law last year that critics said would allow businesses to deny service to gay people for religious reasons.

No matter who wins the presidency there is only so much they can do to influence the LGBT rights policies. For example, if Clinton wins and there is a Republic controlled house it is unlikely that her Equality Act will get anywhere.

It’s highly unlikely that the same sex marriage law would be affected but some conservatives hope that a Supreme Court that has been reconfigured by trump might reverse the 2015 ruling that permitted same sex marriage in all 50 states.

There are some areas that could be majorly affected because it would depend on how active the new president would be in pushing LGBT rights forwards. For example, Clinton would probably push through the work of Obama to get transgender rights approved.

This might mean that schools and colleges would come under pressure to allow students to use a bathroom according to their gender identity and not according to the sex they were given on their birth certificate.

Many transgendered students have said they have faced issues such as discomfort and harassment when forced to use a bathroom they do not feel comfortable with.

Trump has told the conservatives that he will seek to protect Christians from having to violate their religious beliefs. This could mean for example that a professional working in the wedding industry could openly refuse to work on a same sex marriage and would not be punished for discrimination. They would even be able to publically announce they will not work with same sex couples.

Many states have democratic candidates that have declared they will oppose laws that restrict the rights of the LGBT community and they will push for LGBT civil rights if they are elected.

Some of the Republican candidates are on the other side of this and have vowed to endorse laws that Christians feel go against their religion such as transgender issues and same sex marriage.

It can only be hoped that our LGBT rights are looked after and pushed forwards but a lot of that will depend on the presidential win and the governors elected in each individual state.

Hillary Clinton’s Reiterates Her Commitment To LGBTQ Equality In New HRC Campaign Video Ad

HRC released a new video ad featuring Hillary Clinton’s historic commitment to fighting for full LGBTQ equality.

In the video,Clinton says,

We need to build an America where no one has to worry that they can get married on Saturday and be fired on Monday; where kids aren’t bullied just because of who they are; and where every American has the chance to live up to his or her God-given potential, no matter who they are or who they love.”

In addition to her long record as a champion for LGBTQ rights both in the U.S. and around the globe, Hillary Clinton has proposed the most robust pro-LGBTQ equality agenda of any presidential candidate in history.

She has called the Equality Act her “highest priority,” and her detailed LGBTQ policy platform specifically calls for outlawing dangerous “conversion therapy” for minors, ending the epidemic of transgender violence, and supporting HIV prevention and affordable treatment, among other proposals that would advance equality and support the LGBTQ community.

HRC President Chad Griffin, added

Time and again Hillary Clinton has demonstrated through her words and actions that she is committed to fighting for full LGBTQ equality. All of the progress we’ve achieved is at stake in this election. While Donald Trump continues his hate-filled campaign and threatens to drag us backwards, Hillary Clinton will fight to break down the walls of discrimination that still hold us back. It’s crucially important that pro-equality Americans turn out and vote for Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States.”

‘Vaginas Against Trump’: OITNB Cast & Crew Send Donald Trump A Clear Message

Taking to Instagram, the cast and crew of Netlix’s Orange Is the New Black took a stand against Donald Trump, who is under fire for lewd comments he made about women with then-Access Hollywood co-host Billy Bush in a leaked video from 2005.

In the photo, which was originally posted by Lea DeLaria, the group don orange and black T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase, Vaginas Against Trump.

The shirts speak for themselves. Vaginas and the people who love them are really really done.”

The high profile posting drew ire from some with one user responding to the image with an equally strongly worded message:

Love diminishing women as just a body part. So classy.”

DeLaria, 58, wrote back.

You’re right! I’m objectifying women. I’m so glad this straight white guy was able to point out my evil ways.”

Vaginas Against Trump shirts are being sold through an organization by the same name which was set up a week before Trump’s video was unearthed.

‘Mr. Trump, We see your sexist, racist, and oppressive ways and today we say NO MORE! We stand united with those you consistently devalue and demean,’ the group wrote.

Hillary Clinton Writes Historic Pro-LGBTQ Op-Ed

Hillary Clinton may have started out with a confusing and sometimes embattled relationship to the LGBTQ community, but now she is asserting her commitment to progress and equal rights.

In a historic op-ed published in Philadelphia Gay News, Clinton talks marriage equality, and workplace discrimination.

The simple truth is that even now, in 2016, there are still too many states in America where LGBT people can be fired or evicted from their home because of who they are or who they love. Pennsylvania is one of them. Here, you can get married on Sunday and fired on Monday, just for being gay or transgender.

That goes against everything we stand for as a country. We need to act on the federal level to take on discrimination in all its forms. That’s what I’ll do as President — with your help.”

She also discusses the effects her opponent Donald Trump would have on the community if he were to win the presidential race.

Donald Trump must not be elected president. He would rip away so much of the progress we’ve made. He would appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn marriage equality and rescind many of President Obama’s executive orders — including those protecting LGBT people.”

Clinton also took this opportunity to point out the shameful anti-LGBTQ history of her opponent’s choice for Vice President:

Mike Pence is one of the most anti-LGBT public officials in America. As governor of Indiana, Pence supported a bill that legalized discrimination against LGBT people. As a member of Congress, he voted against expanding the definition of hate crimes to include sexual orientation and gender identity. He opposed the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ saying doing so would be ‘social experimentation.’ And he’s said that homosexuality would bring about ‘societal collapse.'”

Smartly, Hillary also noted the importance of inter-sectionality in discussions of LGBTQ people:

The danger [of violence] is compounded for LGBT people of color, who face intersectional pressures and dangers, particularly transgender people of color.”

The article marks the first time a presidential candidate from a major party has written for an LGBTQ newspaper, and is a way for Clinton to silence critics who have questioned her commitments to these issues.
