Rethinking Female Beauty – ‘I Heart Girl’ is a Breathtaking Exploration of Women’s Femininity

Take a look at the new portfolio of work by New York photographer Jessica Yatrofsky – I Heart Girl, which is a breathtaking exploration of women’s femininity.

“I’ve always been drawn to depicting the body. I think it’s very important to make images that represent a facet that reflects the current cultural landscape, which is why both [‘I Heart Boy’ and ‘I Heart Girl’] highlight gender identification.”

Talking to i-D, Yatrofsky  said that while some of her subjects are unclothed, all of them project a vulnerability that is important to understanding how they present their gender and sexual identities.

“It’s an impossible task to de-sexualize women. I think sexual identity is important for the self and I care about celebrating and honouring what resonates with how each subject chooses to express herself.”

The I Heart Girl monograph, a follow-up to Yatrofsky’s successful 2011 book I Heart Boy, will be released this summer. The book of portraits shows the huge breadth of people that identify as feminine, urging the viewer to rethink female beauty.

Tom Ford Celebrates the Diversity of Female Beauty with Yaya DaCosta and Trans Model Valentijn de Hingh

Tom Ford  is planning to celebrate female beauty in his latest advertising campaign. The designer revealed his new fall/winter womenswear campaign, will showcase ‘the diversity of female beauty’ with rising stars such as Gigi Hadid, Ashleigh Good, Yaya DaCosta, and trans model Valentijn de Hingh.

As a fierce advocate of equal representation of LGBT models in the fashion industry, Ford selected the stunning Valentijn de Hingh, a transgender Dutch model who recently participated in Bruce Weber’s spring campaign for Barneys with a cast of 17 transgender people.

“The concept is individual style, which was the idea behind my first women’s show in New York. The campaign is focused on the personal, individual style of different types of women.”

Yaya DaCosta is best known for her stint on America’s Next Top Model as Season 3’s runner-up, and was recently cast as Whitney Houston in the upcoming Lifetime biopic, I Will Always Love You. She shines in Tom Ford’s new campaign, alongside others notable beauties.

The star-studded shot also features Ashleigh Good, who closed the Spring 2013 Chanel Haute Couture show as a lesbian bride in response to gay-marriage inequality in France.

Celebrating Female Beauty – John Legend’s New Single ‘You & I’

John Legend has premiered the music video for new single, You & I (Nobody In The World), that includes women of all kinds.

Directed by Mishka Kornai, the video celebrates all kinds of female beauty as it shows a number of different women studying themselves and their own insecurities. That means it has a lesbian couple, Tig Notaro and Laverne Cox among many other beautiful ladies of all ages, shapes, colours and identities.

A documentary called ‘When I Look In The Mirror’ has also been created, which explores the stories of the women in the clip further – with the hope that both pieces will help raise awareness and increase engagement in the #OperationGirl Charity Challenge.

“We live in a world where egregious injustices occur regularly against girls and women. We have a responsibility to take action and disrupt the conditions that allow for such tragedies to occur. Through #OperationGirl we hope to amplify the voices and impact of the many organisations doing great work on behalf of girls and women.”
