Sarah Paulson Finally Wins Her Emmy, Tells Girlfriend “I Love You” During Touching Acceptance Speech

It finally happened: Sarah Paulson has won her first Emmy, for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie, and ended her speech by telling her girlfriend, “Holland Taylor, I love you.”

Taylor has returned the love with this adorable tweet.

Paulson won for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in The People vs. OJ Simpson, an FX limited series on the infamous murder trial that made caused a media storm in the mid to late ‘90s.

Playing a real person while they are still living is a big responsibility. She is the mother to two children who were very young when the trial was going on, and were not really privy to a lot of what she was put through. I just kept thinking, I hope this doesn’t hurt Marcia any further. I hope the things that we are doing don’t inflict any more pain.”

During her acceptance speech, Paulson used her time onstage to publicly apologize to Clark—who was sitting in the audience—for misperceiving her, as much of the public did, during the O.J. Simpson trial. Afterward, Paulson told reporters why she brought Clark as her date and felt the public apology was necessary.

That wasn’t the only queer moment at this year’s Emmy Awards, with gay SNL and Ghostbusters actress Kate McKinnon winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

McKinnon appeared visibly moved, thanking her SNL boss Lorne Michaels and dedicating her trophy to her late father, who first introduced her to the NBC sketch staple at age 12.

McKinnon wins on her third consecutive nomination for Saturday Night Live.

And it appears the television academy members aren’t the only ones who thought McKinnon deserved this award:

Jeffrey Tambor, a cisgender male actor who plays a transgender woman in Transparent, won best actor.

In a moving acceptance speech, he addressed the lack of authentic representation of trans people in Hollywood.

Please give transgender talent a chance. Give them auditions. Give them their story. Do that… I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male playing a female transgender on television. We have work to do.”

Jill Soloway won the award for Best Directing for a Comedy Series (Transparent), her second win in the category.

Thank you to the trans community for your lived lives. We need to stop violence against transgender women and topple the patriarchy.”

Just before exiting the stage, clutching her golden trophy tight, Jill cheerily quipped, “Topple the patriarchy!”

Tatiana Maslany won the Emmy for best actress in a drama series for her performance in Orphan Black. The actress beat out Viola Davis in How to Get Away With Murder, Claire Danes in Homeland, Taraji P. Henson in Empire, Keri Russell in The Americans and Robin Wright in House of Cards.

And Clea DuVall joined her VEEP cast-mates for a Best Comedy Series win alongside Anna Chlumsky and Best Actress in a Comedy Series Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

‘Arrested Development’ Producer Announces Another 17 Episodes

The Bluth family is set to return for another hilarious season, so get your chicken dances at the ready.

In a fairly off-the-cuff remark amid a discussion at SXSW about his current hit show Empire, he said:

“I love Arrested Development, but it was never a huge thing. But people are loyal to it, and we’re going to do another 17 episodes. So stay tuned for Arrested Development.”

Fortunately, news that the show would return isn’t completely out of the blue, and follows comments last year from Netflix head Ted Sarandos, who said “It’s just a matter of when”, after being asked if new episodes were incoming, and from series actor Will Arnett, who said “It’s going to happen, we don’t know when but it is going to happen.”

Arrested-Development-01

Starring Arnett alongside Michael Cera, Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Jeffrey Tambor and Tony Hale, Arrested Development ran for three series on Fox between 2003 and 2006, attracting a cult following as well as a string of awards.

Cancelled by the network in 2006, the show was picked up by Netflix for a fourth series in August 2012 with fifteen new episodes launched on the online streaming service in May the following year.

While a Netflix spokesperson declined Redeye’s request for comment, you can watch video of Grazer’s announcement below. His remarks begin at the 24:30 mark.

Awards Season: LGBT Visibility and 72nd Golden Globe Awards

At this year 72nd Golden Globes the discussion was on LGBT visibility, and the world beginning to see some clear mainstream recognition to first-rate LGBT films, TV shows, characters and performers.

We had ‘Transparent’, Amazon Prime’s groundbreaking new series about a middle-aged trans woman and her unconventional family. HBO’s adaptation of ‘The Normal Heart’ nominated for Best TV Movie, and nods for co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer. The ‘Imitation Game’, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley in the biopic film about gay codebreaker Alan Turing, earned a bevy of nominations. Then there is ‘Pride’, the indie about queer activists who aligned with striking coal miners in 1980s England – which had already snagged honors at Cannes and the British Independent Film Awards.

Not too mention the nominees in the television categories reflect the growing LGBT inclusivity: ‘Orange Is the New Black’ got a fair share of nods, including for stars Taylor Schilling (Piper Chapman) and Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes). Kevin Spacey scored a nomination as  manipulative bisexual politician Francis ‘Underwood in House of Cards’, and gay faves like ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ also made the cut.

But how did our queer stories fair?

Well, Matt Bomer won a best supporting actor award for ‘The Normal Heart’. Bomer gave a lovely speech thanking his kids and husband Simon Halls.

“To my husband Simon Halls and our three kids… Thank you for putting up with me when I was 130 pounds and really grumpy when you ate pizza in front of me.”

Matt Bomer

Kevin Spacey was awarded Best Actor in a Television Show, but managed to drop F-bomb during his acceptance speech.

‘This is the eighth time I’ve been nominated – I can’t f***ing believe I won!’

Kevin Spacey

This was Spacey’s first Golden Globe win despite previously being nominated eight times; included being nominated for the same role in the Netflix series last year, as well as being nominated for his portrayal of sexually frustrated husband Lester Burnham in American Beauty.

‘Transparent’ was named the Best TV Comedy, and Jeffrey Tambor was named Best Actor in a TV Comedy for his role playing a transgender mother. Creator Jill Soloway thanked her own trans-parent for coming out and inspiring her.

She also dedicated the award to Leelah Alcorn and other transgender youth struggling for acceptance.

“This award is dedicated to the memory of Leelah Alcorn … And I just want to thank you for coming out. Maybe we’ll teach the world something about authenticity, and truth, and love…. to love.”

Jill Soloway

Despite five nominations ‘The Imitation Game’ disappointed at Golden Globes coming away with nothing. ‘Pride’ also failed to feature, and Uzo Aduba and Taylor Schilling were disappointed in the TV category.

So all in all, it was a mixed night for LGBT visibility, but the media hype was very postive.

Lesbian Indie Film ‘Heartland’ Has a Big Budget and Big Potential

Ah, ‘having an affair with your brother’s fiancée’, also known as the hidden step on the road to accepting the death of a loved one. At least, that’s what Lauren does in Heartland when she’s hit by the tragic and sudden loss of her girlfriend and decides to move back home to Oklahoma to make the pain feel a little less painful.

Her brother Justin and his aforementioned fiancée Carrie (who is described as “uptight” by the filmmakers) head to the Southern state to help launch a local winery, whilst Lauren, an artist extraordinaire, opts to help them put together the marketing.

The ‘sordid’ affair part of the film happens when Lauren “regains her sense of adventure” and Carrie realises that hey, maybe the heterosexual marriage tradition just isn’t for her. The filmmakers also explain that it becomes a “sexual affair that can’t remain secret for long” which doesn’t bode well for Heartland’s f/f pairing but it certainly sounds like a good watch.

http://vimeo.com/107310248

As it stands, the film is complete. High profile actors like Jeffrey Tambor (of Arrested Development and Transparent fame) and out actress Sarah Paulson (from American Horror Story) have all been vocal in their support but more than words, Heartland needs money for post-production.

The team behind it is using indiegogo to raise funds, with a goal set at $150,000. That seems a little lofty but they explain that they need the funds to market Heartland and get the movie out there. Unfortunately their budget is too small for traditional investors to chip in but it’s too big for the filmmakers (they’re a team of six at the moment) to cover themselves.

There are 17 days to go and a third of that figure has been raised so Heartland stands a good chance of reaching its goal. The indiegogo page also explains that the funding is tax deductible, which basically means that if you pay taxes you’ll get it back when you file them.
