Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood Discuss Their Latest Collaboration ‘Into the Forest’

Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood have talked to Monsters and Critics about their new collaboration, Into the Forest.

The apocalyptic movie, which Page produced as well as co-stars in with Wood, is based on Jean Hegland’s novel of the same name.

However, it isn’t your typical end-of-days movie.

Forget the zombie attacks or fire and brimstone, this drama from writer-director Patricia Rozema looks at the psychological side of complete loss.

into-the-forest-01

It’s a story about two sisters who struggle to survive in a remote country house after a continent-wide power outage.

Page recently explained Into the Forest was a metaphor for grief. The way the sisters believe power will be restored, groceries re-stocked and things will go back to normal play into our own fears of change and impermanence — all expectations and attachments we ultimately have no control over.

They’re dealing with just an overall sense of grief, and loss of what they’ve known and what they were about to expect, which I think is just a huge part of what being alive means. Page also touches on the decision she made two years ago to come out as gay as “the best decision I’ve ever made.

into-the-forest

I still get a little emotional talking about. I feel like a different person and I feel so lucky, so fortunate for that because that’s not the case for a lot of people who come out.”

Lesbian Classics – 5 Films That Paved The Way For Lesbian Visibility

Before shows like the L word, Faking It, and Glee’s Britanna getting married on mainstream television. Not to mention way before Ellen Degeneres, Sara Gilbert, and Lily Tomlin were out of the closet – Lesbian visibility was pretty lame when it came to TV and Film.

Trying to identify any early cinematic representations of lesbianism was like collecting crumbs off the top table, but then there was a turn in the trend. We started to see female queer filmmakers (such as Nicole Conn, Kelli Herd, and Sharon Pollack) emerge and deliver real life lesbian storylines.

They were films made by women for women, where lesbian characters were not typically portrayed as victims, femme fatales, killers, prostitutes or neurotic crazy ladies. In fact they told stories of true romance, love and real-life events.

To celebrate, KitschMix.TV is now hosting 5 classic films, which you can rent or buy. All of which are well-worth watching.

Directed by Patricia Rozema, the film stars the sizzling Pascale Bussières and Rachael Crawford – rent it now.

YES! We’re getting sneak peck at Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood together in their upcoming drama about seclusion, Into the Forest.

into-the-forest-01

Their new movie premiers at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival

A brief description states:

In a not-too-distant future, sisters Nell and Eva find themselves shuttered in their home. Surrounded by nothing but miles of dense forest, the sisters must fend for themselves using the supplies and food reserves they have before turning to the forest to discover what it will provide. They are faced with a world where rumour is the only guide, trust is a scarce commodity, gas is king and loneliness is excruciating. And yet somehow miraculously, love still grows.”

We’ve no idea when will get to see this one in the cinemas, but all we can say is ‘Ellen keep them coming’ – 🙂

Rumour Round-Up | Ellen Page Flying Solo, Katie Stevens’ Girl Crushes, And Kristen Stewart Doesn’t Give A F**k… Plus More

Ellen Page Flying Solo

Despite rumours a few weeks back about Ellen Page’s potential dating interests (aka Shailene Woodley), the actress has stated she is still single in a recent interview in Brazil. Not only does she halt all discussion on her romantic life, but the star was keen to express that her coming out was the best decision she has ever made.

The Juno actress, who came out on Valentine’s Day last year, spoke out about what it has been like to be open to the world.

“I decided [to come out] because I was sad, I felt uninspired, I felt uncomfortable, it hurt relationships, I felt guilty for not being out, and it was time. It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I was immediately felt like a new person.”

Katie Stevens’ girl crushes

Faking It‘s Katie Stevens is in Maxim this month, and of course she discusses what kind of women she’s into:

“I love girls that have bodies. Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara – they’re all just gorgeous. I aspire to look like J. Lo when I’m her age. Another girl crush of mine, like the crush, is Jennifer Aniston. I just want to be their friends and find out what the secret formula is.”

Kristen Stewart Is Really ‘F*cking Proud’ Of ‘Twilight’

The Twilight Saga might not have the best critical reputation, and Kristen Stewart’s days fronting the tween franchise are firmly in her past, that doesn’t mean she thinks it was a failure in any way. In a smoking hot interview with Interview magazine, Stewart discusses the trilogy.

“I mean, it was a long process, so it’s hard to generalize about it as a whole. It wasn’t entirely cohesive. We ebbed and flowed. I will definitely acknowledge that. But the intention is so fucking pure in a weird way. Anybody who wants to talk shit about ‘Twilight,’ I completely get it, but there’s something there that I’m endlessly, and to this day, f*cking proud of. My memory of it felt — still feels — really good.”

Michelle Rodriguez isn’t afraid of a nip-slip

Michelle Rodriguez isn’t worried about wardrobe malfunctions while wearing revealing outfits during Fashion Week — in fact, Cara Delevingne ex-girlfriend welcomes flashing unintended flesh.

Rodriguez was hitting the catwalk for Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Relief last week, in a dangerously low-cut Halston Heritage number.

“This outfit makes me feel very natural and sexy. If a little nipple pops out, I don’t care.”

Portia de Rossi sat down with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America and addressed the rumours that she and wife Ellen are experiencing marriage problems.

Rumour Round-Up | Ellen Page in Court, Kristen Stewart Hires U-Haul, Rosie O’donell In Cougar Town & Queen Latifah’s Getaway

WTF – Ellen Page in Court?!

Ellen Page and her lawyers found themselves in court this week, after police arrested a stranger crashing in her front yard. WTF?!

The guy had set up camp and made himself cosy with all the necessities – bedding, a cell phone, a laptop, iPod, a pot pipe, and for some reason, one PlayStation game controller (why just one… we have no idea).

Ellen-Page

Ms Page was unaware of her intruder, until he repeatedly knocked on her window and tried to bust in through her front door.

Ellen says the guy told police she’s a “nice” person who wouldn’t mind him squatting on her property – I think she did mind.

A restraining order was issued against the man for trespassing, with a judge ordering him to stay 100-yards away for Ellen and her pad.

Where’s the U-Haul at?

The saga continues with the is-she-isn’t-she Kristen Stewart. This week it has been all over the papers that Ms Stewart and her rumored BF/GF, Alicia Cargile, are taking the next big step in their relationship – they’re renting an U-Haul people!

Kristen Stewart gives a death stare getting coffee

“Kristen recently bought a huge loft in downtown LA and she asked Alicia to move in. It seemed pointless to live apart, since they were with each other every day.”

Anonymous insider

For months now, rumours have been flying that the two are in a lesbian relationship. But Ms Stewart has yet to confirm their romance or living arrangements, despite the continued media hounding.

Welcome to Cougar Town

Rosie O’Donnell recently announced that she was splitting from wife Michelle Rounds, and then went on to shock the nation by quitting her job on The View.

However, Rosie appears to be looking on the bright side of life. Speaking at a recent film festival in New York City, the 52-year-old comedienne joked that she now feels like a ‘lesbian cougar’ when meeting young pretty fans – Grrrrrrr!

Ms O’Donnell went on to say temptation is everywhere now that she’s single … especially when she’s face to face with some obsequious students from Barnard College – huba huba

Awesome, Tegan and Sara To Perform At The Oscars

Its been announced that Tegan and Sara will be taking the stage at the Oscars. The duo has been added to the long list of performers, to sing hit song Everything Is Awesome, which is featured in The Lego Movie.

Although The Lego Movie may have been snubbed at the Oscars in the Best Animated Feature category, it did nab a Best Original Song nomination for the song, which was written by Shawn Patterson.

The awards show producers have now announced that the song will be performed live at the Academy Awards by The Lonely Island and Tegan & Sara, who performed the song for the end credits of the movie. The Lonely Island confirmed that they would be playing the song live via their Twitter.

The 87th annual Academy Awards will be held Sunday, February 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Rumour Round-Up – Kristen Stewart Outing, Ellen Page Dating, Angle Haze Single & Cara Delevingne Parties

Kristen Stewart & Alicia Cargile spotted together again, and again, and AGAIN!

Kristen Stewart is still driving the tabloids wild, not only is she the face of Wonderland, BUT she still insisting on travelling the world with make-up artist, and LESBIAN friend, Alicia Cargile. Are they, aren’t they… we’re not too sure, but they certainly have everyone’s attention.

Alicia-Cargile-01

Ellen Page dating Shailene Woodley?!

Really – but they’re just BFFs. Well apparently Ellen’s coming out and Shailene’s fluidity in love means there is plenty of room too gossip.

According to certain sources, the pair are rumoured to be dating, having been spotted dining in West Hollywood. A dinner, which comes on the back of Shailene hinting at her possible bisexuality – telling The Hollywood Reporter:

shailene-woodley-ellen-page-01

“I fall in love with human beings based on who they are, not based on what they do or what sex they are.”

Shailene Woodley

Personally I think everyone needs to calm down a little bit. Yes they would make a great lesbian power couple, but a dinner date with a lesbian doesn’t automatically make you gay.

High drama for Angel Haze

On a slightly sadder note – rumours were buzzing that Angel Haze and her girlfriend Ireland Baldwin split. Noooooooo!

It was only 48 short hours ago, we were blissfully happy, listen to Haze’s brilliant new track, Candlxs, a love song she says she wrote for her girlfriend.

But then something terrible happened, with the rapper tweeting:

angelnoooo

But like all lesbian relationship the heartache was short lived and today the couple are back in love again… phew.

Cara Delevingne bounces back…

And final we have Cara Delevingne. Oh Cara, Cara, Cara… how you make our office buzz. According to source, Ms Delevingne love affair with Selena Gomez is over… when did it even start?! Hmmm, I seem to remember this little rumour started circulating last year for some reason vaguely to do with Justin bieber, but this short-lived romance has now been dashed by Gomez moving onto DJ Beau Zedd. Shame.

cara-delevingne-and-selena-gomez

Alas we cannot be too sad for Ms Delevingne, as she has quickly been embraced by two Hollywood tribes – the Willis (Bruce Willis and Demi Moore children).

The Social Media War Continues Between Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi

Oh how we love it when a couple’s high jinks play out through their social media pages. Especially when that couple is lesbian idols, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi.

First it was Ellen posting a video of Portia ‘bending and snapping’ to a vintage Jane Fonda work out tape.

However, if Ellen thought she could pull a playful prank on Portia without getting a little reprisal in return, she was wrong.

Portia was quickly on the attack, tweeting a video of Ellen singing while running – go Portia!

The winner? Everyone watching. Here’s hoping the pranks continue, and they keep sharing the results.

KitschMix’s Top 10 Out Women Who Totally Rocked 2014

In terms of representation, queer women have had a fantastic year. From the many queer female characters in our movie theatres (e.g Life Partners) and in our TV shows (e.g Orange is the New Black) to the monumental human rights decisions that have taken place this year (e.g the many US states that now have same-sex marriage), things are on the up.

We’ve also seen many queer women come out – or, if they were already out, they’ve been kicking ass and taking names all year round. And so, to celebrate these out and proud ladies, we’ve put together this list!

1. Ellen Page

Julianne-Moore-and-Ellen-Page-01

Possibly the biggest coming out story of the year was when Oscar nominated actress Ellen Page came out.

After years of rumours and speculation the tiny Canadian actress put them all to bed, telling the crowd at the HRCF Time to Thrive Conference she was ‘tired of lying’ about who she is. The moving speech brought many to tears and plenty of credited it with being the reason that they themselves have come out.

And, as if her amazing speech wasn’t enough, Page also spent the year being wonderful on Twitter, most preciously by renaming people’s pets!

2. Brittney Griner

brittney-griner-author-credit-brandon-sullivan-photography

A trailblazer by many accounts, Brittney Griner made headlines last year when she came out ahead of the 2013 WNBA draft (where she was the number 1 pick). Then, with the Phoenix Mercury she broke the WNBA dunk record in her very first game. With her phenomenal talent she also won over fans when she helped take the Phoenix Mercury to a championship title in September.

As for other records she became the first out athlete to get a Nike campaign, showing that no, being gay does not harm your marketing potential.

Furthermore, Griner also got engaged to fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson in August, which may not have set any records but it was certainly adorable.

3. Mary Lambert

mary-lambert-03

While you know her best for doing the backing vocals of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ track ‘Same Love’, Mary Lambert is also a massively outspoken gay rights activist.

An out and proud lesbian herself, Lambert very often talks about religion and how it relates to sexuality as well as body image and how to appreciate yourself. Earlier this year she also launched the Body Love campaign to encourage people to love themselves.

4. Emily Rios

Emily Rios 02

Emily Rios’ name will be familiar to those who watch cult TV classics Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad but more recently you may have seen her play a young gay reporter in The Bridge.

While the show was sadly cancelled back in October after two seasons, Rios’ character in The Bridge was significant because we got to see a queer Mexican woman on our TV screens, which doesn’t happen very often. Rios also explained that “I’m gay, personally, so being Mexican and a lesbian — this is why I love the character because I deal with the same type of things with my own family.”

5. Angel Haze

Angel Haze 01

Whilst straight rapper Macklemore may have picked up plenty of awards for Same Love, its this cover by out pansexual rapper Angel Haze that feels like a more honest rendition.

This year, Haze has made headlines not just with her discography of fantastic, hard hitting lyrics but due to her love life too. Earlier this year Haze confirmed that she’s dating model Ireland Baldwin and the couple both flirt on Twitter and hilariously take down those who dismiss their relationship as ‘gal pals’.

6. Djuan Trent

Djuan Trent 03

When we think of the beauty pageant scene, few people would ever refer to it as a ‘progressive industry’ yet surprisingly, at least one former contestant is outspoken about equality.

Djuan Trent, Miss Kentucky 2010, came out as ‘queer’ earlier this year explaining that she needed to hit back against those who thought that she agreed with their anti-equality views.

Trent says that she chose ‘queer ‘ because it’s a more inclusive term and that she hopes to open up the conversation about sexuality being fluid and she also wants to foster more visibility and representation of young women of colour.

7. Samira Wiley

Samira Wiley 06

Samira Wiley is familiar to us as the funny and emotional inmate Poussey Washington in Orange is the New Black. Her amazing performances this season as Poussey dealt with her feelings for her best friend Taystee and as we saw flashbacks to Poussey’s difficult life as the child of an overseas soldier garnered praise and interest, but plenty were talking about Wiley this year for an altogether different reason.

It became public in September that Orange is the New Black writer Lauren Morelli would be divorcing her husband, after striking up a romance with Wiley. The pair had been acting cute together on Instagram for the past year (they were also seen looking close at the Emmys) and the fact that the couple was now out was just the previous icing on the cake.

Wiley also took to New York City’s Pride Parade with the rest of the OITNB cast, making her a bit of an advocate too.

8. Joanna Lohman

Also garnering headline for dating a colleague is Joanna Lohman. A professional football (soccer) player for the Boston Breakers, she became engaged to fellow Breakers player Lianne Sanderson earlier this year.

Whilst players dating each other is not a total rarity in the world of women’s football (current USWNT player Abby Wambach is married to now retired player Sarah Huffman) they are the first to date a teammate.

In an interview earlier this year Lohman told a reporter that “When someone comes up to you and says, ‘Thank you for being who you are,’ it has much more of a profound impact than, ‘Good game.’”

9. Vicky Beeching

Vicky Beeching

Like the aforementioned beauty pageant scene, the world of Contemporary Christian Music is also an unlikely source of progressive opinion yet that’s exactly what gay Christian singer Vicky Beeching delivered when she came out earlier this year.

Beeching told The Independent: “What Jesus taught was a radical message of welcome and inclusion and love. I feel certain God loves me just the way I am, and I have a huge sense of calling to communicate that to young people.” helping to foster a more accepting viewpoint in the religion.

10. Anna Paquin

Anna Paquin

Finally, we have bisexual actress Anna Paquin.

Paquin came out as bisexual several years ago, following her marriage to her True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer. But does the fact that she’s married to a man make her bisexual identity any less legitimate? Of course not. however, she was forced to explain this to TV host Larry King earlier this year when he was baffled by the concept of bisexuality. Her explanation is an absolute must-see.

On coming out Ellen Page says,

“You just feel different in the world. Once you’ve done something that you used to think was impossible, what could ever really scare you again? Angel Haze: Rapper

Out-100-05

The rap artist Angel Haze, who identifies as pansexual and eschews gender pronouns in her music, exhibits an insatiable thirst for authenticity and a take-no-prisoners attitude, making her rapid-fire rhymes all the more compelling.

Evan Rachel Wood: Actress

Samira Wiley: Actress

Out-100-09

“I remember it so vividly. There was this girl who went to my school, and she did a Nikki Giovanni poem, ‘Ego Tripping,’ and it was just different from everyone else’s. It wasn’t flat recitation. It had an energy and a life to it. And it made me sit up in my seat, and my eyes got wide, and I really felt inside myself, She’s making me feel things. I want to do that.”

Ariel Schrag: Writer, Illustrator

Out-100-10

You may know Ariel Schrag from her graphic memoirs, each detailing a year in her life at Berkeley High School in excruciating, heartfelt detail. But this year she channeled all of that awkward energy into her first novel, Adam.

Lena Waithe: Comedian

Out-100-03

This year, Lena Waithe turned 30; took the first film she ever produced, Dear White People, to Sundance; sold a pilot to BET based on her Web series Twenties; and was named one of Variety’s 10 Comedians to Watch.

“But the coolest thing I did was fall in love with an amazing woman. That put all the other things into perspective.”

Lisa Kron: Playwright And Actress

Out-100-11

This year, while performing in a wacky production of Bertolt Brecht’s Good Person of Szechwan, Kron also served as the book writer and lyricist for the musical adaptation of Fun Home, based on Alison Bechdel’s modern classic, a graphic memoir about her own coming out and her father’s complicated life and death.

Ellen Page Plays Cover Girl For W Mag’s New Royals Issue

W Mag’s October issue features Ellen Page as its cover girl. Where she can be seen suit and booted. BUT, inside we see a different side to the newly outed actress – Abs out, wearing noting but a cap.

The 27-year-old actress is not the only cover star this month. This issue pays tribute to 12 groundbreakers in entertainment, fashion, film, and comedy. Model Cara Delavingne, who dated Michelle Rodriguez earlier this year, plus Kristen Wiig, Naomi Campbell, and Charlotte Casiraghi also take their own covers as the new royalty of film, fashion, comedy, and more.

Here’s what the ladies shared:

Ellen, on her first audition:

“I was 10 when I started acting. A casting director came to my school looking for kids. I auditioned for a TV movie called Pit Pony, and I got it. Acting became an immediate fixation. I was a child, but I was so ambitious. At 17, I costarred in Hard Candy, about a pedophile and his victim, whom I played. My character had to castrate the pedophile. I’ve always loved learning things for a part, and I remember researching castration and thinking, This is so interesting. I’m a nerd that way: I love the challenges of this job.”

ellen-page-v-mag-01 ellen-page-v-mag-02

Cara, on being naked:

“As a child, I loved being naked. My parents would have to force me to be dressed because otherwise I’d take my clothes off and run around the supermarket. Nudity was liberation to me. Freedom. My entire family is pretty nudist-y. We went to nude beaches a lot. I always wondered why the men on nude beaches had the smallest penises.”

It was my choice, too, because I was a bit worried about it but now I don’t really give a shit. You can’t hide away forever. It’s just stupid and now I’ve come out I feel a lot more comfortable with myself. But it was a bit scary back then because some people do have horrible opinions.”

Kristy-McNichol10. Kristy McNichol

In January 2012 Kristy McNichol, who was beloved for playing Buddy Lawrence in the ’70s show ‘Family’, for which she won an Emmy, and later Barbara Weston on the “Golden Girls” spin-off “Empty Nest,” revealed she is a lesbian because she is “approaching 50” and wants to “be open about who I am.”

Amber Heard

Portia de Rossi

Heather-Matarazzo15. Heather Matarazzo

The actress, perhaps best known for her role as tormented teen Dawn Wiener in the film “Welcome To The Dollhouse,” came out in August 2004 by telling the NY Daily News about falling in love with Caroline Murphy:

“I met the person I’m so madly crazy in love with…She’s not famous yet. She will be. She wants to do musical theater and stage, which is not as demoralizing as the movie business is.”

DeGeneres’s character became the first openly gay prime time lead character on television.

Melissa-Etheridge18 . Melissa Etheridge

Melissa Etheridge came out in January 1993 during the Triangle ball, the first ever ball thrown for the LGBT community during a president’s inauguration, in this case Clinton’s.

“I didn’t even think, Oh, I’m going to come out here…It was, ‘Gee, I’m really excited to be here, and I’m really proud to have been a lesbian all my life.’ And a big cheer went up through the whole hall, and k.d. [lang] came out and hugged me. I remember walking back, and my friend said, ‘I think you came out!'”

Maria-Bello19. Maria Bello

Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay. But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives. I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”

Greatest Anti-Heroines of the Silver Screen

It was 20 years ago today that the legendary action movie Léon was released to critical and commercial acclaim. 12-year-old Natalie Portman stole the show as the apprentice hit-woman, despite world-class acting support from Gary Oldman, Jean Reno and Danny Aiello.

We take this opportunity to present 9 other classic anti-heroines who have blown away generations of film-lovers with their sexiness and sassiness.

Bonnie Parker, Bonnie and Clyde

Bonnie and Clyde were a real-life crime duo who caused havoc in 1930s America. This 1967 film portrayed Bonnie Parker (played by Faye Dunaway) as a cigar-smoking femme fatale who you would not want to get on the wrong side of. Check out her skills with a shotgun and gorgeous choice of hats throughout the movie.

Nikita,-La-Femme-NikitaNikita, La Femme Nikita

Assassins seem to be the theme of cinematic anti-heroines. Wan and drug-addicted Nikita (Anne Parillaud) goes on a killing spree after escaping a life sentence in this 1990 tale of cruelty and revenge.

Beatrix-Kiddo,-Kill-Bill-Parts-One-and-TwoBeatrix Kiddo, Kill Bill Parts One and Two

Who can ever forget that yellow jumpsuit? Samurai sword-wielding Beatrix “the Black Mamba” Kiddo was played with understated charisma by Uma Thurman, directed with dark and bloody humour by Quentin Tarantino. Vengeance is the name of the game once Beatrix awakes from a 4-year-long coma…

Shoshanna-Dreyfus,-Inglourious-BasterdsShoshanna Dreyfus, Inglourious Basterds

After his homage to Eastern martial arts movies, Tarantino turned his camera on World War II. Perhaps the most memorable of all the characters in Inglourious Basterds is the young Jewish girl Shoshanna Dreyfus whose parents have been murdered by the coolly psychopathic ‘Jew Killer’, Colonel Lander (played by the marvellous Christoph Waltz). Shoshanna’s aim is to kill the top brass of the Third Reich when they visit her cinema.

Lara-Croft,-Tomb-RaiderLara Croft, Tomb Raider

Not many good films get made from computer games but Tomb Raider is an exception. This is partly due to a dynamite performance from Angelina Jolie as the titular heroin, jumping, kicking and shooting her way through jungles, deserts, caves and – eventually – an alternative dimension of reality.

Mathilda-LéonMathilda, Léon

The on-screen chemistry between Natalie Portman and Jean Reno is unsurpassed in action film history. Reno’s hitman trains the pubescent Mathilda in the art of extreme violence so that she can take revenge on the corrupt, drug-addled detective who massacred her family.

Lisbeth-Salander-The-Girl-with-the-Dragon-TattooLisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Few screen anti-heroines exude attitude in the same way as Noomi Rapace, the punk rocker-cum-computer hacker from the first adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s much-loved crime novel. She makes light work of an evil rapist and an equally evil murderer.

Hit-Girl-Kick-AssHit Girl, Kick Ass

Yet another apprentice hitgirl, except this one is even smaller and even more ferocious. She takes pity on the goofy and inept superhero Kick Ass and helps him try and destroy a criminal empire.

Hanna-Heller-HannaHanna Heller, Hanna

This 2011 thriller sees our eponymous anti-heroine brought up in rural Finland to be a bloodthirsty killing machine before being sent to chase down the wily CIA officer Marissa Wiegler.

Ellen-Ripley-AlienEllen Ripley, Alien

For many reasons is the protagonist of Alien (1979) regarded as one of the greatest female characters in cinema. In deep space, Ripley’s (played by Sigourney Weaver) starship is assaulted by a terrifying alien beast…

7 Disney Characters That Have the Potential to be Lesbians

What is it about Disney movies that we love… Is it the message of being yourself? That the underdog that ends up on top? The idea good will triumph over evil? Or that there will always be a happy ending? For me its all of the above… Yet, while Disney movies funny loving entertainment, there has never been an OUT and proud lesbian, gay, bi or trans character in an animated movie.

However, this doesn’t mean there isn’t some closeted folks in the mix. Characters that Disney could have intended to be gay, or use gay stereotypes. So let’s take a look back and see exactly who are the most ambiguously ‘lesbian’ Disney characters… So here are 7 characters we believe have the potentially to be Lesbians.

DISCLAIMER: This is all up for interpretation and in no way should be seen as a factual representation of what the filmmakers intended.

 Disney-Lesbians-011. Terkina from Tarzan

Played by out lesbian Rosie O’Donnell, Terk was a girl which nobody had an idea was a girl when Tarzan was released in 1999.
In the film, Terk is a tomboy who hates dressing like a lady and has no interest in other males.

Disney-Lesbians-022. Elsa from Frozen

On the gay spectrum Frozen hits it big time for lesbian-reference. With her ice powers, Elsa is different from other people. Her difference is an occasion of fear and secrecy. Misguidedly, her parents teach her to “conceal it, don’t feel it.” This repression of her true nature leads to isolation, anxiety and finally a meltdown at Elsa’s coronation, at which she inadvertently ‘outs’ herself. Regarded with fear and revulsion by others, Elsa defies the society that has rejected her, and celebrating her acceptance of her true identity in the power ballad “Let it Go”. Also something to note, Elsa at no time shares her sister Anna’s romantic longings, nor does she show any interest in a male suitor or in being courted.

Disney-Lesbians-033. Miranda Wright from Bonkers

Miranda has a lot of strikes in the possible lady-lover category. Female cop. Serious lack of interest in traditional love life. Hangs out with insanely dramatic, possibly gay couple (Bonkers and Fallapart). Really, if it weren’t for the fact that she wears her hair long and uses a bra instead of an ace bandage, I’d say she here gayness was a cert.

Disney-Lesbians-044. Merida from Brave

After Brave premiered there was a huge furore over the idea the next Disney princess was a lesbian. They reasoned the only way a 14-year-old archer have no interest in getting married to suitors she had never met unless she was gay? While this was quickly disregarded as soon as they actually watched the movie, Merida still has a large gay and feminist following.

Disney-Lesbians-055. Nakoma from Pocahontas

I always thought Pocahontas and Nakoma were lesbians and had to keep it a secret due to Pocahontas’ betrothment to to Kocoum.
Nakoma is best friends with Pocahontas, and the two girls have been friends for a long time. Nakoma’s personality is a foil to that of her best friend. While Pocahontas is more free-spirited and mischievous, Nakoma usually tries to be more serious and responsible. She sometimes tries to act as the voice of reason to Pocahontas. However, her warnings often go unheeded, especially when she tries to stop Pocahontas from going to find John Smith.

Disney-Lesbians-076. Rebecca Cunningham from TaleSpin

TaleSpin was a spin-off to The Jungle Book‘s Baloo. It was also a cheesy attempt to create a safe “bad boy” character in the form of Kit Cloudkicker. While some claim Rebecca and Baloo have a love/hate thing going on, it’s clear that overall she is disgusted and annoyed by him, therefore opts to stay out of a romance.

Disney-Lesbians-067. Gadget Hackwrench from Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers

Gadget was the brains, and the beauty in Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, yet she had a careless disregard for her femininity. She hung out with the cool guys, whose advances she more or less ignored over-and-over again, while solving crimes, fixing engines, and inventing awesome flying machines. Gadget is pretty much the lesbian backbone thats holds the group together.

Tinker Belles and Evil Queens: The Walt Disney Company from the Inside Out

From its Magic Kingdom theme parks to its udderless cows, the Walt Disney Company has successfully maintained itself as the brand name of conservative American family values. But the Walt Disney Company has also had a long and complex relationship to the gay and lesbian community that is only now becoming visible. In Tinker Belles and Evil Queens, Sean Griffin traces the evolution of this interaction between the company and gay communities, from the 1930s use of Mickey Mouse as a code phrase for gay to the 1990s “Gay Nights” at the Magic Kingdom. Armed with first-person accounts from Disney audiences, Griffin demonstrates how Disney animation, live-action films, television series, theme parks, and merchandise provide varied motifs and characteristics that readily lend themselves to use by gay culture… find out more

Lesbian Fashion Icons – Yes We Have Them, and WOW They’re Hot

Our list of Lesbian Fashion Icons. From the way they wear a shirt, to the cut of their blazers, lesbian celebrities are certainly making their mark and the age of dyke chic is here…

Beth Ditto

We just adore Beth Ditto’s style. Why, because there is no one in this world quite like her or in her league when it comes to fashion. Known for her band, Gossip, Beth Ditto radical feminist ora could not give a crap if she is a size 26, as she has never heard of the term “self conscious”. In fact, give her an item of clothing three sizes too small and she’d be all over it. Her brightly coloured Lycra playsuits seem to be her favourite. She’s loud and proud and we look up to this.

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose certainly knows what she’s going to wear in the morning before she steps out the front door. She is the definition of style – tattoo’d sleeve, vests and skinny jeans is her signature outfit, along with quirky piece of jewellery, which she nails it every time. Ms Rose came out as a big lesbian young, and since then she has always had this edgy cool look about her – she is a women who know’s what she wants in life and that is always a positive thing.

Kate Moennig

In The L Word, Kate Moennig played the tomboy / butch, against the ultra femme backdrop. In playing Shane, she has started a trend, which queer girls all over the world began to copy. The look is simple – white vests with blazers, converse on feet, and straight black hair with a floppy fringe. Most want to be her, and in the L word every lesbian wanted her. Her just-out-of-bed hair, is now the definition of ‘alternative lifestyle haircut’ – its bends gender.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen’s classic suits, crisp trousers, body-conscious sweaters and vests are tailored to be youthful, trendy and flattering. Matched with bright, playful colours and worn with sporty white trainers, Ellen have carved a fashion look that American go crazy for. She is the lesbian staple when it comes to fashion – she proves that menswear is not just for stone butches, but soft and fuzzy day-time-TV super stylist divas too.

AzMarie Livingston

Far from being a classic metropolitan girl, AzMarie Livingston hails from the conservative mid-west town of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Standing almost 5’10″, AzMarie gay essence certainly informs her fashion style. Blazing her own trail, she is unafraid to show her tattoos and sports a crew cut. Her look is unique and she is stunning. We completely understand why Raven-Symoné is smiling so sweetly now.

Lesbian Favourites Wanda Sykes and Ellen DeGeneres

Lesbian favourite Wanda Sykes visited The Ellen Show to talk about dinner time at her house with her wife and twins.

The insight into the comedian’s personal life was a nice one to see. Even with all of her visible roles, Wanda Sykes has always been highly protective of her family and personal life. Sykes married her beautiful French wife – Alex, during the brief period in which California allowed same-sex marriage; the couple held a small ceremony for close family and friends in Palm Springs. However, when California’s Proposition 8 passed in the November 2008 election, banning same-sex marriage, Sykes decided to lend her celebrity to the cause of marriage equality. After discussing it with Alex, Sykes came out in a speech at a rally in Las Vegas. Since then, Sykes has stayed involved in the political effort to restore same-sex marriage rights in California.

In May 2009 Sykes was selected to perform at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency. In addition to being the first African-American woman to fill the role, she was also the first openly gay person, either male or female. There seems to be in no danger of Sykes giving up her biting, personal style of comedy any time soon:

“I love doing stand-up, because it gives me the freedom to say what I really want to say. I think that’s why it’s my favorite thing to do,”

Dinner Time at Wanda Sykes’ House
