Yara Greyjoy And Ellaria Sand: Will ‘Game Of Thrones’ Kill With A Kiss Again?

A trailer for Game of Thrones Season 7 teases a lesbian kiss – and it could seriously upset the power balance of the show.

The latest trailer for the fantasy series dropped this week, and it has left us absolutely wanting more.

Jon Snow is announcing that the great war is here, Cersei is ready to murder literally anyone, and Dany’s dragons are ready to GO.

However – blink-and-you’ll-miss-it – at 1:22, the trailer teased a kiss between Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand!

Yara Greyjoy, who was revealed to be a lesbian last season, was most recently seen in Mereen, agreeing to an alliance with everyone’s favourite mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen.

Greyjoy pledged the Iron Fleet to form part of Daenerys’ massive invasion force, giving a boost to her bid to claim the Iron Throne.

We had speculated that the show might embrace Daenerys’ bisexuality, which featured heavily in the books, by connecting her to Yara.

However, the clip suggests she has her sights set on a different ruler – Ellaria Sand.

While we know Ellaria is a crafty one (the last woman she kissed ended up dead, RIP Myrcella), we’re not getting the feeling that this is a trick.

The trailer apparently confirms that Dorne has joined the invasion, and the two women could be one hell of a couple, bringing two of the seven kingdoms with them.

You can see the moment in the trailer below. Game of Thrones returns on July 16.

Game Of Thrones’ Gemma Whelan On Yara’s Sexuality, & Her Promising Relationship With Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys

In the recently concluded season 6 of Game of Thrones, we learned that Yara is “up for anything” when it comes to romance.

However, the actress who plays the character doesn’t think that the Ironborn is bisexual.

Talking to Vulture, Gemma Whelan explained

I don’t think she’s bisexual. There’s a new saying going around, ‘pansexual,’ which means if she’s up for it … I think she says, ‘I’m up for anything.’ That’s her ethos. I don’t think she swings any way in particular, other than the way she feels at the time. She’s just open-minded, which fits the character perfectly.”

Yara’s open-mindedness was highlighted in her scene with Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) in the season’s penultimate episode, where the Ironborn – along with her brother Theon (Alfie Allen) – told the Mother of Dragons what they wanted from her and what their uncle Euron (Pilou Asbæk) wanted from her, too.

Euron is aiming for Daenerys hand in marriage for his help in taking the Seven Kingdoms, but his ultimate plan is to kill her right after she successfully ascends the Iron Throne.

When asked if she would like Yara and Daenerys’ relationship to turn romantic, Whelan told added.

Emilia and I both enjoy the idea. [Laughs.] We get along very well, so we enjoy working with each other quite a lot. So maybe! I don’t know! It’s up to the writers and the machinations of their minds. We like each other, we reflect each other, and whether it’s more than friendship is irrelevant, really.”

Are ‘Game of Thrones’ Story Makers Plotting The Shows First Major Lesbian Storyline?

Game of Thrones (major spoilers ahead) has featured a number of gay characters in the past, but these have been mainly male relationships with doomed romances.

However, the show recently re-introduced Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan), who holds a claim to the throne of the Iron Islands.

Greyjoy was quick to establish her interest in women in a passionate scene earlier this month.

Since it’s my last night ashore for a long while, I’m gonna go f**k the tits off this one.”

However, fans are hopeful that a big romance could be on the cards for Greyjoy, after the character’s sizzling introduction to Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

In the scene, the two prospective Queens flirt as they form an alliance, while discussing a rather vulgar marriage proposal from Greyjoy’s uncle.

Daenerys quips: “And I imagine your offer is free of any marriage demands?”

Yara shoots back: “I never demand… but I’m up for anything, really”.

A major romance between the pair seems unlikely given how Daenerys’ whole narrative has been about her being entirely independent, but the prospect of the romance is not too far-fetched given elements of the original novels.

In the books, Daenerys Targaryen is explicitly portrayed as bisexual, having intimate flings with her handmaidens as well as male romances.

Reacting to the latest episode, Whelan had this to say

There’s mild flirtation, which is exciting to say the least. I mean, get rid of Daario bring on the ladies.”
