What Are the Responsibilities Of A Lesbian Artist?

Let’s be honest: Most cisgender, heterosexual men write about anything they want. They write about cisgender, heterosexual men. They write about elderly women.

They write about lesbians and transgender men and people in foreign countries.

They consider themselves the experts on all human life.

As a lesbian artist or writer, you might want to focus on cisgender, heterosexual men, but the LGBT community is looking to you to tell their stories.

Is it your responsibility to create art about LGBT people?

No. Artists shouldn’t pigeonhole themselves into one thing.

After all, when your artistic identity comes first, then you’re not “that lesbian artist,” you’re an artist who happens to be a lesbian. As an artist, you can’t grow if you keep creating the same stories over and over. Expand your talents – and your audience.

Yes. If lesbians don’t tell their own stories, who will?

Cisgender, heterosexual men will continue to tell lesbian stories – badly. Many will base their ideas of lesbians on porn, two episodes of Ellen, and that one androgynous gym teacher they had in middle school.

They will use lesbians as a tool: Sexy Lesbians will sell more movie tickets. Butch Lesbians will provide comic relief. Pretty Lesbians will fall in love with the male protagonist. Tragic Lesbians will earn the writer an Oscar for telling heartbreaking stories.

It’s impossible to stop bad representation completely, and for every Transparent, there will always be a Crying Game. But telling our own stories is an important step in the right section. Let’s elbow those cisgender straight men out of the way.

No. Lesbians shouldn’t have to preach.

If a lesbian writes a lesbian story because she thinks it’s her lesbian duty, then the result will be a mess. The story will often be flat, uninspired and preachy. It will read less like a novel and more like a Public Service Announcement. People can tell when lessons are being forced down their throats, and that turns them off even more.

It’s better to create no lesbian art than bad lesbian art.

Yes. LGBT identities are a natural part of life.

If a lesbian artist refuses to include LGBT characters or themes in her art, then she is effectively erasing non-heterosexual, non-cisgender identities from the world.

For hundreds of millions people, being LGBT is a core part of their selfhood. An artist who doesn’t include any LGBT characters isn’t just saying that LGBT stories aren’t worth telling – they’re saying that LGBT identities aren’t worth existing.

In conclusion: It depends.

As an artist, your responsibility is to tell the truth. Not facts, but your philosophical, cultural and moral truth.

You should create art that feels true to your experiences, whatever that may be.

Make the art that you’re passionate about. Maybe today you’re passionate about LGBT rights, but in the future you won’t want to address that anymore. That’s okay. Maybe today being a lesbian isn’t a large part of your identity, but in the future you’ll feel called to write about it. That’s okay.

Create what you want to create. Let your art grow with you.

One Million Moms Go Into Meltdown Over ‘Once Upon A Time’ Lesbian Storyline

Hate group One Million Moms have gone into melt down about a recent episode of ABC’s “Once Upon A Time” that featured a lesbian kiss .

According to their press release:

ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” introduced a lesbian couple during this week’s episode which 1MM and parents find completely unnecessary. On the other hand, the producers said the inclusion of homosexuality in a show popular with kids was “important.” Many families watch the program based on beloved children’s fairytales, but unfortunately, ABC has distorted and twisted the storylines in these fables.”

The offending episode, named Ruby Slippers, aired on April 17th and featured Ruby from Little Red Riding Hood and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz kissing, making them the first-ever gay couple to appear on the show.

One aspect that really makes One Million Moms angry is the fact that “the munchkins from Oz watch.”

The press release continues:

True Love’s kiss has been a staple of this show since the beginning. This past Sunday’s episode was just another example of how in a fairytale, as in life, love is love,” co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis said in a statement about the LGBTQ storyline. Horowitz added that the storyline will be as “exciting, emotional, and heartfelt as any other love story.”

“Once Upon a Time’s” executive producers have also said their gay advocacy is “important to do” and something that needs to be “normalized,” not “marginalized.” Last year, when hinting the coming storyline, they said, “It (the LGBTQ relationship) is something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in.” The producers repeated the mantra “love is love” and again admitted that their goal was to normalize and push gay relationships “as a part of everyday life.”

Homosexuality continues to be over-represented in the media because producers want people, and especially kids, to think it’s normal and everyday life. In reality, that is their fairytale.”

So there you have it — this month’s generous helping of stupidity, courtesy of One Million Moms.

Romance blossomed between the two women after a fateful sleeping curse lead Ruby to the Underworld to bestow true love’s kiss on Dorothy to wake her.

Executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz originally revealed an LGBT couple would be joining the show after a screening of the season premiere last year.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Kitsis said

We know that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that”

Horowitz added.

It’s something we want to do this year. It’s something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in.”

Viewers originally speculated that the relationship could occur between Mulan and Aurora – after it was hinted that the pair loved each other – but Kitsis and Horowitz did not reveal which characters the arc would feature until the episode aired.

Iconic Movie Moments With Queer Twist

When it comes LGBT representation in film we often get a bum deal.

Things are starting to change, acceptance is growing momentum, and roles are beginning to open up in mainstream movies. However, what would some of Hollywood’s most beloved films look like with a queer twist?

Artist, Kriti Kaur, took up that challenge – drawing this stunning set of illustrations – that turn 8 iconic cinema moments into same-sex couples.

Kaur came up with the idea for these images after thinking about a way to portray the universal nature of love, no matter what one’s sexual orientation or gender identity may be.

She told HuffPost Gay Voices

I came up with this when I was trying to brainstorm ideas about portraying the concept of love and how it stays the same regardless of people’s gender identities. And I do think that when people think of love, they look back to these famous films that showcase how powerful and amazing it can be. Recreating those moments with LGBT couples just made sense!”

Pizza Hut Boxes That Double As Movie Projectors – Oh Yes! (Video)

Date night just became a lot cooler with Pizza Hut’s new ‘Blockbuster Box’ deal.

All you need is a pizza box, a smart phone and a wall – then you and your girl can have romantic night for two.

The boxes are part of a marketing stunt and were designed by Ogilvy Hong Kong, hence the cool artwork.

What Is Being Gay (According to the Media)?

Lesbian and gay stereotypes permeate every aspect of our society, especially the media. These cliched views of gay characters have existed since the 1900s and are still prevalent, whether you notice them or not.

All exposure isn’t good exposure; these stereotypes are actually extremely damaging to the LGBT community, especially for queer women.

What-Is-Being-Gay-02

When it comes to portraying lesbianism on screen, there is an historical tendency to sensationalise the subject matter.

If you believe the work of exploitation directors such as Jean Rollin and Jess Franco, every woman alive is just waiting for any chance to shed their clothes and get down to lesbian business in a very explicit way.

Lesbian Media stereotypes

The Promiscuous Casanova

These ladies have a different woman every night, and make damn sure not to remember their names the next morning. They’re suave, cocky and always managing to get the girl. As viewers, we tend to fancy them, or want to be (look at how popular the Shane haircut got). They are usually presented with frown and general self-hatred is a must.

The Lesbian Psycho

These ladies range from bunny boilers to full blown psychopaths – if they’re not trying to destroy someone’s life, they’re chasing us with kitchen knives.

vampire-02

The Vampire Dyke

These ladies are a mix of pale skin, pouting lips, sharp teeth and no remorse.  They are so overtly sexual that labelling them, as a lesbian doesn’t really work, as they want everyone. They’ll kiss you, strip you, lick you and then eat you.

The Hot Lesbian

These ladies are stunningly gorgeous. You’ll watch them wade out of pools in slow motion, climbing off motorcycles in leather one-suits, flicking their gorgeous locks in the wind and licking their plumped up lips in anticipation. These women are there strictly for the male gaze, but men beware, as these women will still your woman. It would appear no one can resist especially the naïve girlfriend of some pumped up jock.
