KitschMix’s Tracks of The Week – Julia Vero, Little Dragon, Bastille ft Angel Haze, and Charli XCX

Julia Vero – ‘How Does It Feel?’

Totally in love with the track. The drums and synths build on this power-pop smash, with a euphoric chorus that continuously delivers each time it comes around. This is song which talks to you, gets caught up in your thoughts and gets your attention.

Charli XCX – ‘Gold Coins’

This single brings me back to my 90’s youth. ‘Gold Coins’ is the latest track from Charli XCX’s upcoming pop album SUCKER. Grungy guitars and vocals, plus tongue-in-cheek lyrics puts this track securely in the teen-movie soundtrack category.

Little Dragon – Underbart

Little Dragon have shared the video for ‘Underbart’, from this year’s Nabuma Rubberband. Directed by Grant Singer, it shows singer Yukimi Nagano exploring the city in a number of mental states—one of which features Don Bolles of the Germs wearing mermaid-green hair.

Bastille – Weapon (vs. Angel Haze vs. F*U*G*Z vs. Braque)

We are loving the stomping beat track from British pomp-rockers Bastille. Titled ‘Weapon’ the song features vivid lyrics from acid-tongued Angel Haze. “Watch all those dormant arise, and put all your palms in the sky,” Haze spits, speaking in grandiose terms befitting the stomping beat. “No more falling to pressure, no more villain acceptance.”

The song is not coming off a proper album, but rather a forthcoming mixtape called VS (Other People’s Heartache, Pt 3). In a release, Bastille frontman Dan Smith explains the difference:

“I love having the side lane of our mixtapes as a place where we can make music people might not expect. This mixtape is very much a reflection of our 2014. It’s always been really important to me to constantly make new music and also to collaborate with people, something we don’t really do on our proper albums.”

All-star Treatment for New Die Antwoord ‘Ugly Boy’ Video ft. Cara Delevingne, Jack Black, Marilyn Manson, & Dita Von Teese

If there’s one act whose musical vision you don’t want to mess with, it’s Die Antwoord.

The ever-unapologetic South African rap duo has created their fair share of headlines since forming in 2008. Conflict with a major label over the release of second album ‘Ten$Ion’, homophobic slurs, a Twitter feud with a certain female pop megastar after the duo killed off a lookalike in video ‘Fatty Boom Boom’, accusations of copyright and the use of blackface in their film content are some of the controversies surrounding the group.

Compared with the ‘Insane Clown Posse’ and other satirical rap acts, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er have heralded the rags to riches story with their representation of white trash ghetto rap in South Africa.

Their trademark sound is blending aggressive and chaotic hybrid of Afrikaans, Xhosa and English slang mixed with expletive-filled lyrics, early ’90s rave, rap beats, and provocative imagery of off-putting sexuality and shock thrills.

They now have released the video for their track ‘Ugly Boy’, from their recent ‘Donker Mag album’, and, you’re never going to believe this, but I really like it.

Its weirdness just gets better due to the fact it features cameos from a star-studded line-up of fellow weirdos, like Jack Black, Marilyn Manson, Flea, Dita Von Teese, The ATL twins, Cara Delevingne, and, I’m pretty sure, Aphex Twin.

Out Songwriter Haviland Stillwell Releases Her Latest Video for ‘Muse’

[tweet_dis]Haviland Stillwell has released her latest video for ‘Muse’ off of her album ‘Spark'[/tweet_dis]. The music video was directed by Elliot London and features Ashley Reed.

Stillwell is an out actress, singer, and producer, who feels living your truth in the open, with love and enthusiasm, is the way to true fulfillment.

“As an artist it’s important to be free and not to live in fear. I made a decision early on that I just had to be true to myself and be out. It just meant I’m not going to lie about this part of myself. I don’t want to be ashamed because it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

I’ve actually seen more of a positive benefit of being out than the other way around. We have the benefit now of so many people being out. It’s not like this weird subsection of society anymore. You turn on the TV and there’s Ellen (DeGeneres), there’s Neil Patrick Harris. We have to be role models, we all do. With social media now, you have to teach people by example.

Haviland Stillwell

Growing up in Georgia, she started her career debuting on Broadway in the original cast revival of ‘Fiddler on The Roof’, followed by Les Miserables. She relocated to Los Angeles in 2008, and has since been in films and television shows like Single Ladies, CSI:NY, and Eastwick.

She also created the wickedly funny web series Unicorn Plan-It, with Ashley Reed and Sarah Croce.

Meet FKA twigs – East London’s Avant-pop Auteur

Over the last year, London-based artist FKA twigs has produced a series of excitingly original pieces of music, each of which featured an equally striking visual accompaniment. A mix of soaring vocals and trip-hop beats, she has become an industry darling.

Luckily for us she has been sharing a number of tunes all summer long from her upcoming debut album LP1 – the latest being ‘Pendulum’.

‘FKA twigs is unlike anything you’ve ever seen or heard before. Meet the British avant-pop auteur rewriting the sound of modern music’

Dazed Magazine

‘Pendulum’ begins by focusing on Twig’s vocals as they drive the song. Then faraway rap beats starts to provide atmosphere.

“My hope for this record is that people will be able to identify my sound as a producer and understand how much of this I do myself. I’m being fearless and finding a strength in myself to be more confident, to make bolder moves. It’s a tough industry. People always belittle what you’re doing, your creativity. I’m not listening to the sly putdowns.
I’m finding the strength and confidence within myself to ignore those voices, and do what I’m doing regardless.”

‘Pendulum’ is out now and you can pre-order LP1, which comes out August 12 on Young Turks.

Jenny Lewis’ Puts Anne Hathaway & Kristen Stewart In Drag

Jenny Lewis’ new music video ‘Just One Of The Guys’ is fantastic. Starring Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson in drag, the video is for Lewis’ first single off her first album in six years – ‘The Voyager’.

Stewart, Larson and Hathaway all play back up in the music video. The trio switch it up from all-white clad band, to becoming the titular dudes, all wearing tracksuits and fake moustaches. The song is about the expectations placed on women as they get older.

Lewis’ previous solo album, Acid Tongue may have been six years ago, but she’s been busy. In the interim, she created a collaborative I’m Having Fun Now under Jenny & Jonny, and she also did film work, scoring and writing songs for the indie flicks ‘Very Good Girls’ and ‘Song One’.

Voyager drops on July 29th. Watch below.

Country Rockers Antigone Rising Release Explosive New Music Vido – Get To You

Groundbreaking lesbian country rock band Antigone Rising premiered their new video ‘Get To You’ this week.

New York-based Antigone Rising made the video with directors Valerie Lasser and Jie Yi while touring New England last March. The infectious “Get To You” features on the band’s recent EP Whiskey & Wine – Volume 1, which came out online on March 25th, 2014.

The “Get To You” video is has a strong theme of sisterly love and bonding that reflects the way all the band members feel about each other when they are on the road. The video offers a rare insight into the Antigone Rising you don’t see on-stage. All four members – Kristin Ellis-Henderson, Cathy Henderson, Nini Camps and Dena Tauriello – are very much like a family.

Since the 1990s Antigone Rising have gone from strength to stregth. After signing to Starbuck’s Hear Music (Lava Records) they moved over 150,000 copies of their debut album and toured with legends such as The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band, The Bangles and Aerosmith.

In 2013 Kristen Henderson was photographed kissing her wife on the front cover of a special issue of Time Magazine exploring same-sex marriage. The band have also worked in Israel and Palestine as US cultural ambassadors.

The band are currently touring the US in support of Whiskey & Wine – Volume 1 and plan to bring out yet another EP, Whiskey & Wine – Volume 2, on October 28th. Antigone Rising are a very fan-focused band, putting out a huge amount of content such as alternate mixes of their best-loved songs, music videos and all kinds of behind the scenes footage.

Thus Antigone Rising really mean it when they sing ‘Get To You’!

Watch the Fantastic New Single from Heather Peace – ‘We Can Change’

Take a look at Heather Peace new single, ‘We Can Change’, which is the first single to be realised from Heather new album, ‘The Thin Line’ (available to pre-order now).

“It’s my big gay anthem. It’s for every kid that has ever messaged me on social media to say they’re being bullied. It’s basically saying, stop pointing out the differences and we can actually change the world for the better. The line ‘this is just a part of me, it’s not the whole of me’ is really just a dig at those editors who feel like they have to write ‘LESBIAN actress’ or ‘LESBIAN musician’ as the tag line to interviews I do. Just actress or musician is fine. I’ve been playing the piano longer than I’ve been kissing girls and my wife says I’m much better at the piano.”

Heather Peace

Heathers second studio album, ‘The Thin Line’ will be released on Monday, 9th June, and to accompany the launch, she will be tour UK on her biggest tour to date – stopping at, Oxford, Norwich, Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh, Leeds, Birmingham, London, Brighton and Bristol.

‘We Can Change’ is the first single from Heather new album, ‘The Thin Line’ available to pre-order now. Music video by Heather Peace performing ‘We Can Change’. (C) 2014 Kaleidoscope Records Ltd.

New Bondage-Themed Video From Miley Cyrus Conjures Grace Jones

Miley Cyrus’ new video ‘Tongue Tied’ isn’t a single — it’s a Quentin Jones-directed, Grace Jones-referencing fashion film.

The bondage-themed visuals look like a mixture of Slave To The Rhythm and Madonna circa ‘Erotic’, with Cyrus wearing that bondage lightly – and literally. She stretches the definition of kink and turns it into pop.

Watch and enjoy…

New Music Video From Melissa Etheridge – Uprising Of Love

Via press release:

The video delivers a powerful message to create awareness about the many countries around the world where LGBT people are facing harassment, arrest, violence, and in some cases, death. The new music video, produced and directed by creative agency Wondros, is a montage of peaceful Russian LGBT rallies and protests, and true affection of couples in love. Etheridge originally wrote the song in response to the systematic discrimination of the Russian LGBT community. In December, Etheridge co-founded a coalition of celebrities and entertainment executives also called Uprising of Love, in support of the safety and dignity of LGBT Russians. 100% of proceeds from the single will be donated to the Russia Freedom Fund, which is one of the only ways to make immediate and direct financial contributions to LGBT activists in Russia.
