Addictive Lesbian watching – This is the story of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing girlfriend.

‘Orange Is The New Black’ season 6: release date, trailer, cast, and everything we know so far

What’s next after THAT cliffhanger?

Summertime is meant for beaches, pool parties, tanning, vacations, flings, friends, and most importantly, taking a mental break.

However, for us, it means the return of Netflix’s hit show Orange is the New Black .

If you need your memory jogged, the final episode of season five – which played out over three days during a riot – saw 10 of Litchfield’s finest, including Alex, Piper and Nicky, in Frieda’s bunker that had just been broken into by the CERT officers, while the rest of Litchfield’s inmates were loaded into buses and heading to new prisons.

Unlike season five, details of the sixth season have been kept closely guarded by Netflix, until this teaser trailer dropped. Dramatic stuff.

In the sixth season of Orange is the New Black, the ladies of Litchfield are say goodbye to their home for the last five seasons after a riot left the detention centre in shambles.

Now Netflix’s leading ladies are headed to a maximum security jail, where the stakes will undoubtedly be much higher.

Orange Is the New Black season 6 spoilers: What can we expect?

Season five may not have had a major inmate death like Poussey in season four, but there were still the notable deaths of Piscatella (Brad William Henke) in the season finale, while fellow officer Humphrey (Michael Torpey) was also killed off, not from Daya (Dascha Polanco) shooting him in the leg, but from Kukudio (Emily Althaus) blowing oxygen bubbles into his IV.

We certainly know of 10 inmates that have to be back and they are the ones left in the converted bunker in Litchfield at the end of season five.

They are: Frieda (Dale Soules), Suzanne (Uzo Aduba), Cindy (Adrienne C Moore), Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Red (Kate Mulgrew), Piper (Taylor Schilling), Alex (Laura Prepon), Nicky, Gloria (Selenis Leyva) and Blanca (Laura Gomez).

The last we saw of Daya, she had turned herself in for shooting Humphreys, and Polanco is being coy about if she’s in season six. “Daya’s on her own; she just committed a crime [and] obviously that will be punished. You might not see her ever again,” she told USA Today.

Other returns likely include Flaca (Jackie Cruz) and Maritza (Diane Guerrero) who were split up on different buses, Maria (Jessica Pimentel) who helped to release the guards captured during the riot (after betraying Gloria) and Lorna (Yael Stone) who surrendered herself to the guards as she is pregnant.

Away from the inmates, we’ll see the likes of Caputo (Nick Sandow) and Linda (Beth Dover) return, the latter who is still a prisoner after failing to convince the guards of her true identity, while Hunter Emery has also confirmed his return as CO Rick Hopper.

In terms of new faces, Bull star Rebecca Knox has joined as new inmate Tina Swope described as a “tough little thing” by the star. “She knows what she wants and she will do whatever it takes to get it,” Knox told Seat42F.

If you weren’t impressed with season five, don’t worry, the show’s creator Jenji Kohan agrees as she described some of the season’s plots as “fan fiction”.

“We had lost a bunch of the original writers,” added co-producer Tara Herrmann. “It wasn’t anyone’s fault. It was just a new dynamic – people were attached to the characters as viewers, not as creators.”

Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, has also been hyping up that season six is “different” following the events of season five’s finale. “There’s no up from there. There’s nowhere you can go that’s a positive,” she told Variety.

“So you’re definitely going to see all of the girls trying to figure out how to get out of this rabbit hole they’ve created. Who is loyal to whom? Who is standing alone? Who is motivated by their own personal will to get out of prison? Who lies and who tells the truth? All of that stuff will come out this season.”

But don’t expect a dramatic shake-up in season six as Kohan also confirmed it’ll still be an ensemble show. “It’s gluttony – I like a little piece of this, a little piece of that,” she explained.

New episodes will officially land on Netflix on July 27, 2018.

OITNB’s Lea DeLaria Was Once Arrested For ‘Being Gay’

Orange is the New Black star Lea DeLaria recently talked about her sexuality with Huffington Post.

In the interview, DeLaria recounted a time that she was arrested for “open homosexuality”.

Although she didn’t mention when it happened, she explained that she was caught making out with a girl next to a lake.

We were so busted. I spent the night in jail and they separated us too because they were afraid we were gonna f*ck in the jail I guess.”

The comedian and actor also spoke about realising she was a lesbian and having sex for the first time with another woman.

She explained that she didn’t like sex because she had first had it with a man.

The first time I had sex I thought it was gross because it wasn’t lesbian sex. I didn’t like it at all but the first time I had lesbian sex I was like OH MY GOD. I remember the girl was f*cking said to me ‘oh my god I feel like a virgin again’.”

DeLaria, who is an icon for LGBT across the world, added that she only realised she was a “butch dyke” during her first job in a dyke bar.

There was this old dyke sitting there and she turned round and yelled hey baby butch. I went ‘oh, I guess I’m a butch dyke’.”

The OITNB star also spoke about dealing with homophobes.

I don’t get hurt, I am filled with rage. So if somebody says something stupid about my sexuality I will get rageful about it.”

OITNB’s Taylor Schilling Opens Up About Her Sexuality

Over the years, there has been much speculation regarding Taylor Schilling sexuality – with rumours circulating that she dated Portlandia star and musician Carrie Brownstein.

But in a recent interview with the Evening Standard Magazine, Schilling talked candidly about how she saw her sexuality.

‘I’ve had very serious relationships with lots of people, and I’m a very expansive human. There’s no part of me that can be put under a label. I really don’t fit into a box – that’s too reductive.”

Schilling, who is currently single, explained:

I’m working all the time – I don’t really have anything else going on. But I’ve had wonderful relationships. I’ve had a lot of love, and I don’t have any qualms about where it comes from.”

Orange Is the New Black has been a pioneering show, confronting LGBT issues head on without stopping to apologise or diluting scenes for fear of offending.

Schilling added she was delighted with how much progress had been made with LGBT issues since the show aired.

Oh, in the first season, all people wanted to talk about was what it was like to kiss a girl. Now, if someone asks me that, there’s complete understanding if I say: ‘I’m not going to answer that question.’”

She says the difference now is that people have stopped caring as much about same-sex relationships

The things that are happening in this show, and to Piper, are not about the gender of the person she’s sleeping with. And that’s only four years. I do feel that things have changed – the world has become a little more Orange.”

Orange Is the New Black: Let’s Talk Piper and Alex’s Surprise Season 5 Ending

Spoiler warning: For those who haven’t finished season 5 of OITNB, plot details will be revealed ahead.

If you’re reading this, you’ve survived your sentence in binge-watching Orange Is the New Black.

One storyline we wanted to here more about was Piper (Taylor Schilling) and Alex (Laura Prepon).

Piper and Alex have had quite the journey on the show.

They’ve been on, they’ve been off and they’ve been in quite a few weird, in between spaces over the course of Orange‘s run.

But by the end of Season 5, it’s safe to say that Piper and Alex’s relationship might be in the best place it’s ever been!

In the episode, titled Tattoo You, we are delivered two parallel flashbacks for the pair, which provides insight into why Alex ended up sending Piper to jail in the first place.

Rewinding to when Piper was still following Alex all over the world, viewers see her ink herself with a fish tattoo signifying beauty for Alex.

Years later, Alex tells a stranger that her “Love is pain” inking was in response to Piper’s beauty fish: Love is pain, not beauty.

Now her ex-girlfriend, Alex admits that Piper broke her heart. The prior seasons have already clued viewers into what happened in between these two memories, but seeing Alex express a mix of anger, love and regret over “ruining Piper’s life” by sending her to Litchfield was a new shade of black on the drug-smuggling nomad.

And Alex wasn’t the only one to have regrets.

Enter a cameo from Jason Biggs, who returned to play Piper’s boyfriend Larry Bloom. When Larry gets his own tattoo, of the Kool-Aid Man, Piper is reminded of Alex and drunk dials her ex later that night.

“How are you still in my brain? Do you miss me? Probably not. I miss you,” she says in the rambling voicemail, which upon listening causes Alex to kick out her girlfriend.

Back at Litchfield, Piper has a phone conversation with her mother, where she says coming close to dying made her realize she doesn’t want to miss out on being with Alex in this lifetime. “I want to stick around because of her,” she admits.

Only hours earlier in Litchfield time, both Piper and Alex, bound and gagged in the shower curtains they were kidnapped in, survived a near-death experience when Piscatella (Brad William Henke) tortured Red (Kate Mulgrew) and threatened their collective existence from inside a janitor’s closet.

They survived — Alex with a broken arm and Piper, a newfound outlook.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Laura Prepon explains

When you look at what they just went through with Piscatella, it puts things into perspective. They just went through this insane thing where they almost died. They saw what happened to Red and Alex’s arm is broken and all these things, and they realize: Life is short, I love this person, let’s just do this.”

Prepon says the Piscatella incident — which ultimately ended with the guard being shot and killed by one of his own riot men — shifted things for the tumultuous twosome.

When something like that happens, it makes people really reevaluate. You realize what’s important.”

In the scene, Piper says she “wanted to die” sitting there and not being able to help Alex when she was hurt.

Despite Alex’s insistence that Piper leave her alone, Piper returned to the bunker where the inmates were hiding, Alex’s missing glasses in hand, and says…

You have taught me that love hurts. You’ve taught me that life, it hurts. And I want to be there for you, I want us to be there for each other so that maybe it hurts a little less.”

Getting down on one knee, Piper popped the question, asking Alex to be her partner through love, pain and beauty fish.

I figured that’s what you were doing,” snarked Alex before accepting. Then asking, “You had to do this now?”

The mid-riot romantic gesture was, as Schilling says, so Piper.

It was interesting that that’s where the rubber met the road for them. In the midst of crisis — let’s get married!”

Schilling says when she read the script, she had never given much thought to whether Piper would be the one to ask, focusing instead on how sweet of a way the moment is to “propel their relationship forward” after a high-stakes situation.

Prepon, on the other hand, said she was very surprised when she read it:

Not even that it was Piper who proposed, but just that it was happening in general.”

Though their celebratory period was short-lived, Schilling froze the moment in time to imagine how they would be as an engaged couple.

I can’t imagine it being very much different than what their relationship is like now, which is so heightened and so dysfunctional in many ways. Marriage doesn’t generally shift course very much and it’s not really a thing that fixes a relationship. I’m curious to see how they react to that.”

When it came to filming the scene, Prepon laughed about the moment occurring in the very unromantic pool room setting.

I love working with Taylor. Whenever we have a scene we just jump into it. We do the damn thing and it’s great and fantastic. She’s a baller and we have a lot of fun together.”

The finale sees Piper and Alex joining hands with eight other inmates as the 10 key characters prepare to face the consequences of their actions.

Clutching hands, the inmates are rocked by the explosion, unaware of what will be greeting them through the other side of the door.

Kristen Stewart isn’t here for sexist fashion rules at cannes

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter; Stewart said

There’s definitely a distinct dress code, right? People get very upset at you if you don’t wear heels or something.”

They do indeed. In 2015, Cannes faced backlash after women were reportedly barred from a red carpet premiere — for Todd Hayes’s pro-LGBTQ romance Carol, no less — because they were wearing flat shoes.

But I feel like you can’t ask people that any more. It’s just kind of a given. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.”

Netflix Have Dropped This Amazing Poussey And Taystee ‘Black Mirror’ Crossover

So you know that Black Mirror episode set in the ’80s? Well, here it is with Poussey (Samira Wiley) and Taystee (Danielle Brooks) from Orange Is The New Black.

(Spoilers for Orange is the New Black Season 4 below!)

The short skit titled Orange is the New Black Mirror, mirrors the plot of Black Mirror’s beloved gay love story San Junipero.

The clip features fan favourite Taystee reunited with her dead friend Poussey.

At the end of the last season, Poussey was dramatically killed, sparking a riot inside the prison.

But in the clip Taystee dreams of seeing her one more time in Black Mirror’s virtual afterlife, San Junipero.

The pair reconcile and dance, but a few moments later Taystee is sent back to the land of the living – waking inside the prison.

Although we’re struggling to accept that this is the last time we’ll ever see Poussey back with a Litchfield inmate, we’re still excited to see how the prison has changed following her tragic death.

Season 5 promises to be an explosive one, with the show left on on a cliffhanger as the pregnant Daya points a gun at prison officer Humphrey – and a gunshot is heard.

The Netflix show will be back on our laptop and TV screens on June 9, picking up exactly where it left off.

You will be gobsmacked by it, and audiences are going to lose their minds. Season four was on every critic’s list as the number one thing on television last year. . . . So when I say season five is better than season four, people are going to go, “What?” It is. I cannot figure out how we do it or how our writers are able to keep this show so fresh, so interesting, so weird, so unique, so amazing, informative, and life-changing season after season after season. Amazing.”

I don’t think people really see women that look like her on television. I also think I have a very unique way of walking through the world, a unique cadence, in terms of the way I carry myself. I think people really look at me and appreciate the character which I’m really grateful for, because you never know. … The biggest thing is that there aren’t many characters out there like myself, so I think because it’s me, it’s like a breath of fresh air, which is kind of cool.”

The Official Trailer For ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 5 Dropped And It’s Literal A No-Holds-Barred Riot

The first full-length trailer for Orange Is the New Black‘s fifth season has been released, and if you thought Litchfield had gone completely out of control before, well, you were wrong.

Season five will pick up exactly where the previous season left off, with Daya pointing a gun at corrections officer Thomas Humphrey, surrounded by inmates baying for his blood.

Changes in management in season four led to increased hostility between the correctional officers and the inmates, which led to the death of a much beloved character in its devastating penultimate episode.

Now the latest trailer gives us a glimpse into the aftermath. The spotlight falls on the inmates during their revolt, and they band together to put their platform to use.

Season five of Orange is the New Black premieres June 9 on Netflix. Watch the trailer, below:

In Real Life, TV Characters Would Be Way More Bisexual

The best part of watching a show is rooting for your favorite characters to get together, even if they’re the same gender. Especially if they’re the same gender. Sometimes, your favorite pairing seems to have a chance – certain shows are notorious for queerbaiting us into thinking that queer pairings are on the horizon. I’m looking at you, Sherlock.

But at the end of the day, those characters never end up together. They either end up with other straight characters or, if they admit they’re gay, they die.

The problem isn’t that there aren’t shows with lesbian characters. There are some, such as Transparent, How to Get Away with Murder, Sense8, and Orange is the New Black. But in many shows, there are the Designated Queer Characters – you know they’re gay, and their gayness is central to their character development (although straight characters’ straightness is never central to their own character development). They either have failed crushes on straight characters or failed romances with Designated Queer Love Interests, who die. I’m looking at you, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

But in real life, people’s sexual identities aren’t always straight lines. They’re fluid. Straight people have gay crushes. Gay people have straight crushes. Straight people have gay experiences but continue to identify as straight. Gay people have straight experiences and continue to identify as gay or queer or bisexual. People experiment with polyamory and threesomes and open relationships.

But in TV shows, straight people are just straight. And gay people are just gay. Unless they’re women, in which case they usually become straight. Or die.

Similarly, TV shows depict gender as being very static. You are either a Masculine Woman, Feminine Woman, Masculine Man or Feminine Man. If you’re transgender, you automatically become the stereotype that corresponds to your gender. But in real life, many people are a little more nonbinary. Sometimes butch women have days they feel like being more feminine, for no reason. Sometimes cisgender people feel like dressing androgynously.

So what needs to change? TV shows should just make sexual and gender queerness a normal part of life and stop acting like sexuality and gender identity are neat boxes.Characters should be able to experiment bisexually, even if they realize they are straight, and have bisexual feelings, even if they don’t act on them. And if a show is using characters as queerbait, then those characters should actually get together – or at least stand a real chance.

Some shows do this well. On Steven Universe, characters are masculine and feminine and androgynous, and many switch back and forth; for example, the main character, Steven, sees nothing wrong with wearing a skirt. When a character has a crush on someone, it doesn’t matter whether the crush is male or female. Similarly, on Black Sails, characters experiment with bisexuality, polyamory, and homosexuality however they see fit. It’s refreshing.

Hopefully, more shows will realize the fluidity of sexuality and gender. Until then, I’ll continue to daydream.

Ruby Rose Set To Return For Season Five Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’

After taking some time off the Netflix series to focus on her Hollywood career, Ruby Rose is set to make a comeback for the prison drama’s fifth season.

According to the The Daily Telegraph, Rose will appear sometime in the second half of the season.

We last saw Rose on the show in a tiny cameo role in last year’s season four after a major role in 2015’s season three.

A character arc saw her disappear for season four, but it’s understood that Rose will reprise her role on the show in the upcoming season five, which is set to hit screens later this year.

Ruby does not appear in the trailer for the new season, but it’s understood that her character will appear later in the season and is set to cause a major shake-up for the inmates of Litchfield.

What’s It Like To Be A Lesbian In The TV Industry?

We applaud shows like Transparent and Orange is the New Black for presenting diverse queer characters. Why can’t more shows revolve around queer characters? It can’t be that hard, right? Web series do it all the time!

Unfortunately, when it comes to LGBT issues, politics get tricky behind the scenes of your favorite shows. Being an openly queer woman creating openly queer content is harder than it looks.

What’s it like to be a gay woman working in TV?

If you’re an actress who looks like a lesbian, you’ll never get any roles.

Actress Lauren Logiudice told Curve that she was having trouble booking roles in Hollywood. She was a beautiful, talented, dynamic actress with years of experience. So what was the problem?

“Your hair is too short,” said her agent.

Her agent said that Lauren’s short, spiky hair made her look like a lesbian. And since only 1.32% of characters on TV are lesbians, she didn’t have a future as a leading lady anytime soon.

Lauren grew her hair out to her chin and immediately booked enough roles to make a living as an actress.

“The dividing line between work and no work was five inches of hair,” she said.

Staff writers don’t have a lot of wiggle room.

Lesbian characters die all the time. Seriously, it’s a problem. So why can’t queer writers in the staff room speak up and change things?

It’s not that easy. The showrunner makes all the major decisions, but even he/she has to take direction from the studio and the network, or risk cancellation. A writer can speak up against a particular writing choice, but ultimately she’s told to write the script that the showrunner wants, and the showrunner will always rewrite her script later.

So why can’t a writer just refuse to write a script? For example, if a queer woman of color didn’t think that a certain death at the end of Orange is the New Black season 4 was justified, couldn’t she refuse to write the script as an act of protest?

Only if she wants to get fired.

Writer-director Maria Maggenti says, “If you want to keep your job, you don’t refuse to write a script.”

TV is changing for the queerer.

Some people say we’re in the Golden Age of Television. Other people call it a Television Bubble. Either way, ages end and bubbles burst.

In order to keep television fresh, networks need new ideas all the time. And they’re finally turning to diverse writers to pitch them.

Director Lynn Shelton says, “For you to have a show that is not going to be like 20 other shows you really have to diversify.” And networks are increasingly searching for creative web series to turn into hit shows like Broad City and Insecure, both of which started on YouTube.

Being a queer woman in the TV industry isn’t easy, but it’s necessary – we’ve come far, but we still have much further to go.

It’s Official: Samira Wiley And Lauren Morelli Are Married!

This weekend, Orange Is the New Black star, Samira Wiley, tied the knot with her longtime partner, Lauren Morelli, in an intimate Palm Springs, California, ceremony surrounded by family and friends.

The brides met while working on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black.

It was while writing for the hit show that Morelli, who was then married to a man, realised she was gay.

Their wedding took place in Palm Springs, California, and Wiley’s parents officiated.

Wiley and Morelli shared a picture, originally published by Martha Stewart Weddings, of them in their wedding outfits. Morelli captioned it “Wifey for Lifey”.

The wedding had a confetti theme, according to the wedding website, and the pair entered their reception to the strains of Justin Bieber’s Baby.

After the couple’s nuptials, Wiley shared an adorable photo of the newlyweds on her Instagram, captioning it simply “#wifed.”

Premiere Date For ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 5 Has Been Revealed In This Awesome Teaser

Orange is the New Black left us with a giant cliffhanger at the end of the fourth season, but we will soon be able to find out what happened inside the walls of Litchfield.

Orange Is The New Black S4

Season 5 will be released on Netflix on Friday, June 9.

Breaking away from the past traditions of the series, Orange is the New Black‘s new season will take place across the span of just three days. All 13 episodes will be contained in this timeline, so it should be quite the juxtaposition from the past seasons.

It would stand to reason that these three days will likely follow the events of last season’s cliffhanger ending, with Litchfield in the midst of a full on riot.

Lea DeLaria Splits From Fiancée Chelsea Fairless

Lea DeLaria announced that she and her longtime girlfriend – fashion editor Chelsea Fairless – had amicably called off their engagement after four years together.

DeLaria posted a photo on Instagram of her with Chelsea and Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor and wrote,

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPIjeqXF1w3/

Apparently this was an eerily prophetic choice of engagement photo as our relationship has since gone the way of David and Liza, with one small exception: our split is amicable. Please exclude us from the tragic and basic celebrity breakup narrative. We were happy together for four years and will remain in each other’s lives. In fact, we look forward to finding new ways to torture each other. We would like to thank our incredible friends and families for their love and support ❤ xoxo Lea &@female_trouble.”

Last year, DeLaria told Out magazine how she’d met Fairless through co-star, Emma Myles, during the first season of Orange is The New Black in 2012.

We set up a date, and within 10 minutes, we pretty much knew. I tend to push relationships away, but this was magical. We were screaming with laughter and finishing each other’s sentences.”

Here’s to a happy 2017 for both DeLaria and Fairless.

Samira Wiley And Lauren Morelli Tell Their Love Story

Most of us know the general tale of Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli falling in love on the set of Orange is the New Black. That Wiley was an actress on the show and Morelli a writer who realized she was gay while working on the Netflix series and subsequently divorced her husband to be with Wiley.

But those particulars don’t touch on the emotions the women went through as they fell in love with one another and discovered things they never knew about themselves as they went from friends to girlfriends to fiancées.

Now, in an interview with Out, the two have revealed how the magic happened.

Wiley explained;

We spent four days in a row working together. Honestly, I thought she was gay the first time I met her.”

Wiley has been out for several years, a proud lesbian in a religious family. Her parents are pastors of the first black Baptist church to perform same-sex union ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLCCA6VA-cH/

Morelli says in the interview

I’d already seen Samira’s audition tape and immediately had a crush on her — the complication being that I was married to a man at the time. I came to New York to shoot my first episode. I was on set, sitting in front of the monitors, and she and Lea DeLaria, who plays Big Boo, walked up to me. Our set is like a lesbian utopia, and I remember thinking, They’re flirting with me.”

Morelli also speaks openly about the shift in her sexual attraction,

I had started questioning my sexuality as a result of being in the writers’ room and talking about all the themes on the show. I was very open with my husband and told him. That turned into a year of going to couples therapy.

I had a few queer women around me, but not many I could talk to about such a huge, vulnerable thing. Samira became my outlet, and through that process I fell in love with her. Being with her felt too good to be true.”

Morelli separated from her husband and began dating Wiley.

After working together, vacationing together and learning about each other’s strengths and weaknesses, faults and virtues, Morelli took Wiley away to Palm Springs in to pop the question.

Before heading out, Wiley said she couldn’t help but notice her girlfriend was acting odd.

She got home and was just not ready to go, and I was confused. She asked me to sit next to her. Then she got me up, and we started dancing together, and she pulled a ring from behind the couch. Lauren has been married before, so I wanted her to tell me she was ready, her to be the one to propose. I didn’t know she was as ready as she was. I was completely shocked. I was crying uncontrollably and kept backing away from her. I asked her after, “Who knows about this?” and she said, “Oh, everyone. Your parents know.” We didn’t tell anyone else for a few days. That was really important to us — to have some time where it was just ours.”

Morelli added;

I was so nervous and terrified she knew it was coming, but she was so shocked that I couldn’t get her to stop crying. She was hyperventilating. I thought, Oh, this is not good. This has gone too far. She was very clear she’d wait for me to be ready, so to give her something I knew she wanted so much was incredible. It was the most magical day of my life.”

Then they each posted the news on Instagram.

Wiley says

There’s this Sara Bareilles song we love called ‘I Choose You.’ For so long in our relationship, I wasn’t ‘the one.’ I was just waiting and being supportive of Lauren’s journey. To see her embrace her sexual orientation the way she has is like that song: ‘I choose this life as a gay woman, and we choose to spend this life together.’ I think — I know — I would not be where I am without Lauren. When I was first being thrust into the public eye, I wouldn’t talk about my orientation. Being with Lauren taught me self-love.”

‘Desert Hearts’ Is Getting A Sequel

I remember when I saw Blue is the Warmest Color about three years ago; the bitter taste it left in me had nothing to do with the nature of the sex scenes, or about the guy waxing poetic about female orgasm in a room full of queer women. After all, it was the first movie solely about lesbians I ever saw after already having questioned my sexuality for a couple of years.

What felt the worst when I left the theatre, was that feeling of incompleteness, of having been let down: why wasn’t the scenario all dreamy, cliché and ideal? Why did Adèle cheat on Emma with a guy and they had to break up, drowning their sorrow in more spaghetti Bolognese?

I didn’t know why I felt that specific need; after all real life generally isn’t dreamy, cliché and ideal. That of course, until I knew: this movie, being the only lesbian movie I had seen up to that point, made up the 100% of lesbian representation I had in my life.

I know that this is no sufficient statistic sample to rely upon, but it still was, and it was trying to tell me one thing: as a queer woman you’ll never have a happy ending.

The following year I watched a dozen more of movies featuring queer women. The statistic sample broadened, and the result remained similar: most queer women in movies either end up with a guy, die, commit suicide or murder – and break up somewhere along the process. Whenever I wanted to discuss and criticize that –specifically for Blue is the Warmest Color and for this year’s Orange is the New Black episode-that-must-not-be-named-and-the-existence-of-which-I-still-refuse-to-acknowledge – people told me that they didn’t find that to be a problem: it was realistic. People break up in real life.

People die in real life. Lesbians and bi women are people, so naturally they break up, they die, and their stories have bad endings.

The thing is that, always statistically speaking, the endings for straight – and obviously cis – people in mainstream films and TV series are not always that realistic. There are hundreds of movies with discouraging and realistic endings, but for every such romantic movie, there is a dozen or romantic movies with pulled-by-the-hair, intensely enhanced, unlikely, unrealistic and unbelievably cheerful endings, in which it seems like the entire universe stopped dealing with its shit for a little while to get Brandon and Mary together in the middle of a rainy 5th Avenue on New Year’s Eve. Why couldn’t we just as easily have Brenda, Mary and their seven cats snuggle happily in their cottage on the last shot of a rom-com? Why do we have to dig so freaking deep in indie Imdb lists to find that rom-com?

The world of cinema, after all, is supposed to be the world of dreams. The world of everything, to be more specific: of dreams, of romance, of drama, of realism, yes, but also the world where everything could happen.

Well, everything apart from the cats and cottage and the happy lesbians.

This is exactly what made the 1986 indie movie Desert Hearts so special: in Donna Deitch’s movie, set in the 1950s, Professor Vivian Bell arrives in Nevada in order to get a divorce from an unsatisfying marriage, and meets Cay Rivvers at the ranch where she stays. Rivvers is an out lesbian who draws her into an affair and their romance sparks in a Western setting and soundtrack.

What’s amazing about this film is that the ending is uncharacteristically happy. It’s thought to be the first lesbian film where the protagonists not only survive till the end, but their relationship even gets stronger. Especially considering when it was made, this is somewhat a miracle, revolutionary even for today. It is thought to be a generally sweet and heartwarming film, following the two women, the problems they face and the building of their relationship in depth, featuring some great and unique scenes.

As Robin Morgan, author and second-wave feminist then said: “This was the first lesbian love story—first same-sex love story at all—in which the protagonists were not either porn actors and in which one or both of whom didn’t kill themselves at the end,” and today added that it could be hard for millennials to imagine the atmosphere of complete lesbian invisibility that prevailed back then.

Deitch was told that she would never be able to work in the same town again, and the actors who participated in the movie (even the ones in straight roles) were told that this was a career-ender. She said that after the film’s premier she received “not a very nice review” by The New York Times critic Vincent Canby, whom she later called “not a very nice man”. According to her, such a review from the New York Times was a death sentence back in the day, but Deitch wouldn’t give up: she advertised the film on her own with self-made leaflets that she handed around town with her brother, to people waiting outside cinemas.

Still, Desert Hearts almost reached box office records and was embraced by multiple film festivals when the movie was launched. Deitch was even asked by Oprah Winfrey to direct the TV miniseries The Women of Brewster Place, featuring one of the first lesbian couples that appeared on TV. Her TV career went on for 25 years and she won an Emmy award, a Hugo award and the Sundance Special Jury Prize for Desert Hearts.

After 25 years, Deitch announced at NBC Out, at a screening of the film at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the making of a sequel to the first movie Desert Hearts.  At the MoMA event, she introduced the stars Helen Shaver (Vivian Bell) and Patricia Charbonneau (Cay Rivvers) who stood up and kissed on the stage. Charbonneau’s daughter was also there. She was called “the Desert Hearts’ Baby” since her mother was pregnant with her during the screening of the film.

Deitch is raising funds for the sequel which will be set in New York – that being the only information that has been shared about the project. She recalled her fundraising process for the first movie that took two years to be completed, in the queer-hostile Hollywood environment of the ‘80s.

Deitch had to sell her house in order to raise money, as well as shares that costed $15,000 for a limited partnership. The main funding resources though, came from feminists and lesbians. “There were straight men, gay men, it was a mix,” she said, “People saw it as a potentially quite commercial film.”

Her fundraising methods were more like those used in political organizing than akin to normal Hollywood studio backing – money raised mostly within the community.

The sequel of Desert Hearts is enthusiastically expected, and we hope for it to set a path for more optimistic, encouraging queer movies that will remind us that we deserve a little piece of happiness in the world.

Samira Wiley Is a Conflicted Mother In New Kitty Genovese Movie ’37’

Samira Wiley may have exited Orange Is the New Black this season, but the actress – who played fan favourite Poussey Washington – is moving on to a new challenge.

Wiley’s new film 37 is a powerful drama and a fictional account of the 1964 rape and murder of Kitty Genovese, and the 37 people who “did nothing” as it happened.

Directed by Danish actress and filmmaker, Puk Gratsen, the film’s retelling is told entirely from the perspectives of her apathetic neighbours.

Wiley plays Joyce Smith who, with her husband and son, fled the race riots in Harlem and have just moved into the Queens neighbourhood.

37-744x496

Talking about the movie to Hollywood Life, Wiley said

As an actor, I want to do a lot of different roles and different from the things people know me for. So that was the first thing that definitely attracted me to the role.

The Kitty Genovese story, which I actually wasn’t familiar with before this film. Researching and figuring out the particulars of what happened that night was definitely — I felt like — a story that needed to be told. To be able to have the opportunity to not only tell that story but also working with such an amazing cast and especially Michael Potts, I just felt like I learned so much to better myself as an actor.

37-2-744x475

She added

Honestly, I really do think something like that is possible in happening today. I think people are so afraid of speaking up because I think there’s this notion of: “If I’m the first one to say something, then I’m going to be the first person that suspicion is cast on.”

Yes! Samira Wiley Just Got Engaged To ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Writer Lauren Morelli

Samira Wiley may have recently checked out of Litchfield, but Orange Is the New Black will still play a central role in her life, as the actress is now engaged to series writer Lauren Morelli, who she had been dating since 2014.

The pair announced the happy news on Instagram, posting a gorgeous photo of the happy couple smiling from ear to ear and Wiley sporting a shiny engagement ring.

Samira captioned the image with a simple, “Yes”.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLJay2-At9T/

The pair fell in love on the set of the Netflix hit after Lauren split amicably from her husband of two years Steve Basilone.

Lauren says she realised she was gay on the set of OINTB after being peppered with questions from cast members about her marriage.

I was finally forced to consider a question that had never, ever occurred to me before: ‘Holy s–t, am I gay?’” she said.

We wish them all the happiness in the world!

Bomb Girls only ran for 2 seasons but every episode was a complete gem. Set in Canada during World War 2 the story is about a group of women that work in a bomb making factory while their husbands are fighting in the war. OITNB’s Samira Wiley And Laverne Cox Set to Slay On ‘Lip Sync Battle’

Fans of Orange is the New Black, get ready, because your world is about to be rocked. Two of our favourites, Samira Wiley (aka: Poussey Washington) and Laverne Cox (aka: Sophia Burset) will be taking the stage on Spike TV’s Lip Sync Battle in the very near future.

tumblr_nmjpkaUNo61rwsul4o1_500

A few days ago, Cox tagged Wiley in a delightful Instagram post, playfully taunting her friend for the battle to come.

I hope you’re ready @whododatlikedat. Just had an amazing rehearsal with the incredible dancers of @spikelsb. You better bring it. The battle is on.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BI6Fr9ygZ6-/

Samira, of course, is nothing but good vibes and enthusiasm. She’s clearly going to bring the major musical skills she showed time and time again in OITNB, and on her snapchat.

See you soon @lavernecox!!!”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BI-82oKAltw/

If we’re being totally honest, we think that Laverne Cox probably has the edge as she’s been working on her sweet sweet moves for the Rocky Horror Picture Showreboot.

In comparison, Wiley is set to appear in an arc on FXX comedy You’re the Worst as a therapist. Acting as a therapist probably has not prepared Wiley for the rigours of a heated lip sync battle nearly as much as the acrobatic antics of Dr. Frankenfurter have prepared Cox.

Whatever the outcome, this promises to be the absolute best Lip Sync Battle of all time.

Not only because these are two talented performers on our screens, but it’s also just great to see trans and queer women represented like this.

Because, yes, queer and trans people of colour deserve to see themselves in mainstream media, and not just when we’re telling important, but sad, stories.

‘But I’m A Cheerleader’ Director Jamie Babbit Discusses The Lack Of Feminine Lesbian Characters In Film

In the latest episode of Queerty’s Going Places director Jamie Babbit discusses the lack of feminine lesbian representation in film and how that issue inspired her to create the lesbian cult comedy But I’m A Cheerleader.

FYI, did you know it’s been 17 years since But, I’m A Cheerleader hit theatres.

cheer-1459538957

Since its release, Babbit has focused mostly on television in recent years, directing episodes of shows like GirlsLooking, The L Word and Orange is the New Black.

However, she did reunite Natasha Lyonne for a new film, Addicted to Fresno.

In Her Own Words ‘Orange is the New Black’ Star Samira Wiley On Why We Love Poussey Washington

This story discusses plot points from the current season of “Orange is the New Black” that’s now on Netflix.

Yes, we’re still reeling after the gut-wrenching end of the show’s fourth season.

(Last chance to stop reading if you’re not caught up!)

Throughout the fourth season, we’re reminded of Poussey Washington’s potential as her relationship with Soso blossoms and she makes friends with her idol, celebrity chef Judy King.

Orange Is The New Black S4

But at the end of the season, things take a very sad turn.

Washington, played by Samira Wiley, is suffocated by a prison guard — one of “the good ones” — during a peaceful protest.

Now that the episode has aired, Wiley is discussing the tough issues that the finale scene forces into light, such as race, violence, and incarceration.

I just see so much potential in Poussey Washington. I root for her. I want to see her outside of prison, making it.”

The season’s final episode was penned by the actor’s real life girlfriend Lauren Morelli.

Wiley, who’s currently filming her next role, playing a therapist on the upcoming third season of FXX’s dramedyYou’re the Worst, sums up why everyone loves Poussey, and why her death will continue to resonate into Season 5 and beyond.

She’s honest, she’s funny, she puts a smile on your face. I’m so, so, so happy to have the opportunity to give life to someone like Poussey.”

So Does Ruby Rose Return Orange is the New Black Season 4? We Now Have The Answer

It’s back, and Season 4 of Orange is the New Black does not disappoint.

But the question on all our lips this morning – will Ruby Rose be in this season????

2c72c560-16c6-0134-fd5e-0e31b36aeb7f

(Spoilers for Orange is the New Black Season 4 ahead.)

As we all know, in Litchfield, the past has a way of following you around.

So isn’t really any surprise that Piper failed to get rid of Ruby Rose’s character Sella.

Rose has cameo role in this season’s storyline, but this time she’s in Nicky’s (played by Natasha Lyonne) world.

In season 3 of Netflix’s hit, Stella was ended up being the baddy, and after seducing Piper and partnering with her on the illegal panty business, she stole all of the profits.

She also gave Piper a tattoo that said “Trust No B*tch” without her knowledge.

So, right before she was about to be released, Stella was framed and sent to max.

Piper (and all of her friends gathered) up every bit of contraband and hid it in Stella’s bunk.

Bye Stella. Hell maximum security prison.

Moving forward and to Season 4, Episode 6, where we get to see the maximum security prison up close and personal.

And guess who is there.

Yep, we catch-up with Stella once more – hanging around in the yard and attempting to start a conversation with Nicky.

a8233920-16ed-0134-24c1-0e1b1c96d76b

However, we quickly learn that Stella was taking advantage of the prison’s drug scene, so Nicky doesn’t want anything to do with her.

And that was it! Just like that, Stella was gone again.

But it does mean there is always the potential for Stella to make a return, and could come back when you least expect it.

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 4 Trailer Has Arrived, And It Looks AMAZING

After what feels like an eternity, Netflix have finally released the official trailer for season four, and it looks AMAZING.

Amidst growing racial tension and new love interests, the women of Orange Is The New Black will have to cope with new inmmates as the Litchfield prison becomes a for-profit institution.

Judging from the new trailer for OITNB Season 4, there’s a lot more drama cooking when the show returns to Netflix, on June 17th.

I have seen the world change around who we are. I feel that as a political organization, we finally started to win the hearts and minds of people and organizations like this in Iowa.”

And in a recent interview with Advocate, Uzo Aduba says she gets hit up by a lot of female fans:

Yeah, so many ladies on social media want me to throw my pie for them, or they want to throw a pie for me. They ask to be my Dandelion. I appreciate it. I also get a lot of proposals. Sometimes I’m like, “Hmm, how big is the ring?” It’s all in good fun.”

In her acceptance speech for Sense8, Wachowski thanked the “fabulous people at GLAAD” and then added a jab at the reporter who attempted to force her outing:

Love is a crucial thing for transgender people. It’s a tether. When faced with a rather simple proposition of whether you’re unlovable, our imagination falters. Too many of us end up on the wrong side of the existential question of love or oblivion. And so we ring that bell. Not just for everyone else’s sake, but our own.”

OITNB is seen as one of the most culturally diverse shows on TV these days, winning praise from critics and fans alike.

LGBT media pressure group  recently praised the show, as it announced it will no longer publish an annual report monitoring the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBT representation on TV.

GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis warned that the film industry was in danger of being left behind – by failing to mirror the progress made by ground-breaking TV shows such as OITNB and Transparent.

The show has won fans for its realistic portrayal of women, its exploration of trans issues and its abundance of same-sex relationships – especially that of lead characters Piper and Alex.

The show recently won a host of SAG awards – with Uzo Abuda picking up her second award for Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her role as Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren.

The show’s entire cast also picked up the Best Ensemble award – with an extensive 35 cast members name-checked, including Ruby Rose, and Lea DeLaria.

The show’s fourth season is set to air on June 17.

Happy Days! Netflix Renews ‘Orange is the New Black’ For Three More Seasons

Netflix’s award-winning comedy series Orange is the New Black is here to stay: the streaming platform announced on Friday that the show has been renewed for three more seasons.

Orange-New-Black-Season-4-Details

The three additional seasons will follow the fourth season, which debuts on Netflix on 17 June.

Jenji Kohan said in a statement:

Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things. In some cultures, ‘May you lead an interesting life,’ is a curse, but I don’t live in those cultures. Here’s to keeping it interesting.

Thanks Netflix! Both thanks and you’re welcome Lionsgate! And kudos and gratitude to the stellar cast and crew and writers and producers and editors and musicians and mixers and shleppers… with whom I have the pride and honor of crafting this show.

Three more years! Three more years!”

Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice-president of original content, added:

Jenji and her team have produced a phenomenal and impactful series that is both funny and dramatic, outrageous and heartfelt. Audiences around the world have come to love the ladies and men of Orange is the New Black, and we are eager to see where three more seasons will take them.”

The news comes in the wake of the show winning big at the Screen Actors Guild awards on Saturday, where it collected the comedy ensemble award and the comedy female actor trophy for star Uzo Aduba – both for the second year running. Aduba has also netted two Emmys for her performance as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren.
