12 Fictional Lesbian Couples That Changed Attitudes, Inspired Us And Made TV History

Television is now finally getting to the stage in which lesbian characters are appearing in mainstream programmes, being portrayed in a positive way and are embraced by all audiences. But that has been a long time coming.

So how did TV reach that point? Well, over the year’s television networks have dipped their toes in the water and given us lesbian couples that viewers have endeared to. Here are 13 of those couples that helped make positive changes in television and attitudes.

Willow and Tara (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

tumblr_lm51civpyh1qh00uno1_500

How cute were these two? Yes, OK, Tara died, but while they were together they were a pretty awesome couple. They were also one of the first lesbian couples that had prominent airtime on a primetime American TV series, which in itself is quite cool.

Bette and Tina (The L Word)

tumblr_llb73myiwz1qg82xfo1_500

Well, they had their ups and they had their downs, but boy, they were an awesome couple. Both successful career women, both very much in love, they split up, they reconnected, they had a baby and they remained together until the end of the series. These ladies did a lot for lesbians the world over and helped set a benchmark for other lesbian TV characters that appeared when the L word had finished.

Paige and Alex (Degrassi: The Next Generation)

alex_paige

This teen soap Canadian drama introduced Paige and Alex into the show in 2005 and explored queer relationships in a positive way, helping many teens accept and embrace their sexuality. Paige and Alex were a very popular couple amongst viewers and the show portrayed their relationship in a very realistic and positive way.

Madame Vestra and Jenny (Doctor Who)

tumblr_nban74whwi1r3wairo1_500

Doctor Who has occasionally had the odd queer character but ‘Lizard woman from the dawn of time and her wife’ appeared in quite a few episodes and they were such a popular couple that Doctor Who showed them in even more episodes because the fan base asked for it. A lizard lady and a female human is just great.

Santana and Brittany (Glee)

tumblr_n0ytj9xsau1qf9mevo1_500

Glee also had a few gay characters while it was on TV, but these two girls had such a positive relationship that they outshone the other queer characters shown. They communicated with each other so well, they were very much in love and even sang to each other. Glee had a very wide audience and Santana and Brittany were adored by many.

Carol and Susan (Friends)

carol-and-susan

Carol and Susan made history when Carol gave birth to Ross’s baby while she was in a relationship with Susan. These episodes were aired in 1995 and Friends was aimed at heterosexuals. These episodes brought about a lot of discussions surrounding queer relationships and parenthood which is not bad going as the series didn’t have much of a queer following.

Cosima and Delphine (Orphan Black)

tumblr_nor75wpwaa1uqxm8vo1_500

Cosima and Delphine have had their share of ups and downs, but they have an intense attraction and love for each other which is very real. There have also been some issues between them both as Delphine has kept secrets from Cosima, again something real that does happen in relationships. Another positive is they haven’t killed them off yet either, as TV do have a habit of killing off queer characters. So, these two are obviously doing something right to still be with us.

Lauren and Bo (Lost Girl)

tumblr_lp9jv3ucf91qmcengo1_500

Lauren and Bo have done a lot for Lesbians in the way that they surround themselves with, and get support from, the people they call family. It’s a bit like our lesbian community. A strong network of people that care about you and understand you. These girls are also sex positive, a unique attribute in TV, especially around queer characters.

Steph and Lena (The Fosters)

tumblr_nokevq6zpd1sm9b5to1_500

This married lesbian couple with children are portrayed so realistically. They argue, kiss and make up, they talk things through, flirt and play fight. They are very multi-dimensional and are a great inspiration to other lesbian couples as well as showing the hetro community that lesbian couples are just the same as they are.

Jeri and Wendy Ross/Pam (Jessica Jones)

96c729c4daa9930c694b0d0586d15f6f42b484a2_hq

What is so great about Jeri is the fact she was changed from the comic character of a man into a lesbian female for the TV version, but she has the same complex, twisted and ambiguous character traits as her male comic book character has. This is also a great thing as women can be just like that, lesbian or straight, and it helps again to show that lesbians are just women after all, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Nomi and Amanita (Sense8)

tumblr_inline_o5hy5vlnif1qj2j49_500

In this show Nomi is a trans lesbian woman living with her bi-ethnic girlfriend. That’s fantastic in itself, but the past revolutionary difference? Nomi is played by a real trans actor and this is a first on TV. Usually trans characters are played by cis actors so this is ground-breaking stuff.

Waverly and Nicole (Wyonna Earp)

tumblr_o7vevhaahr1qbfgclo2_540

These two are great characters as they are such opposites. Nicole is a cop and Waverly is part of a family that are cursed. What an unlikely pairing! They’ve also both escaped death on numerous occasions which hopefully means there are no plans to kill them off any time soon. Another great positive.

7 TV Shows That Treat LGBT Characters Fairly

As far as queer representation in television goes, it’s a really hit-and-miss game. Some characters are so gay that it hurts, while others play into that “bi-curious phase” stigma that affects so much of our bisexual family. No matter what the specific problem is, it’s really hard to find a show that actually treats their LGBT characters fairly. (And, by “fairly”, we mean like real people – not like plot devices.)

What is so hard about making a believable queer character? Especially since we must assume that they’re putting them in their shows for their queer audience. Like we’re not going to notice that they’re a terrible caricature of us. Give me a break.

Thankfully, there are some shows that treat their LGBT characters the way we want them treated. I’ve gathered a list of 7 shows that get it right, based entirely on my own perspective. I’m well aware that there are other shows with gay and bisexual characters in them, but I don’t watch every single one. Hopefully my list will help you find a new favorite – or drop the name of one I’ve missed down in the comments!

(Note: For the sake of simplicity, I’m leaving out shows which feature primarily queer characters. Sorry, OitNB – I’ll show you some love later on, I promise. Also, understandably, this post may contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.)

1. American Horror Story

While AHS might not be the pinnacle of queer entertainment, there are queer characters throughout the seasons.

tumblr_n19ug3FYlW1rrl0mgo2_500

These characters aren’t “special snowflakes” (usually) or sacrificed for the sake of ratings – they are no more or less likely to die than their straight counterparts.

As a huge horror media junkie, seeing queer characters placed organically within the storyline makes me happy – even if I know they’re going to die in the end.

tumblr_nwm103fXc31r3fv6wo1_500

2. Pretty Little Liars

While PLL loses some points for their “dramatic reveal” of the mentally-ill transgendered character being the big villain, they do win some of those points back for their portrayal of Emily Fields and her many love interests throughout the show.

tumblr_mf4shufo2U1rnda0mo1_500

Emily’s character is relatable because her sexual identity isn’t her only identity – it’s just one of the facets of her life. She shows that lesbians fall in love, have straight friends, and stress about the crazy shit in their lives, just like everyone else, and that we can also look smoking hot while doing it.

giphy (24)

3. Scream

I’ll admit: I’m a major slasher nerd. So when I heard that Scream was being remade into a TV series, I was ecstatic. When I found out that one of the main characters was not exactly straight, I was even more ecstatic.

tumblr_nw844j42SM1swqz28o5_540

Audrey Jensen’s character identifies as bi-curious, but she’s explored her sexuality a bit off the camera. What I love even more about her is that her BFFs, Emma Duval and Noah Foster, don’t push her to identify a certain way – making them awesome allies, too.

tumblr_inline_nrqz4lDPYS1txk1l4_500

4. Orphan Black

Okay, so I was way, way late coming to the OB fandom (so late, in fact, that I binge-watched the first three seasons within about a week so I could catch up for the season four premiere… ahem), but the reputation held by CoPhine (Cosima and Delphine, for non-fans) had already drawn me in before I watched that first episode.

tumblr_n28ntnpRqv1tutjoko1_500

I could berate the writers for using Delphine to queerbait Cosima and the viewers, but instead I’ll point out how both Cosima and Tony exist as real people who just happen to be lesbian and transgender, respectively.

gay2

5. Adventure Time

Let’s talk about Princess Bubblegum and Marceline for a minute. These aren’t exactly your run-of-the-mill bisexual characters – and, like pretty much all bisexual characters on TV, ever, they don’t actually say the word.

tumblr_mjd1uebhto1rkiy6bo2_500

Even with this subtle bi erasure, it’s great that there are cartoons that show that being bisexual is really NBD.

anigif_enhanced-16394-1408039694-5

6. Real O’Neals

Unlike the other shows on this list, Real O’Neals is actually about being gay and discriminated against, but the way they handle it is so beautiful that it deserves its own recognition.

tumblr_o3i28s9lwc1v8o7j5o2_500

While Kenny O’Neal’s character does play on quite a few stereotypes about gay young men, it also deals with the all-too-important message of accepting and loving yourself, and the idea that your family will come around to it, eventually. (And, if not, it’s their loss.)

7. Steven Universe

For the longest time, I tried to pretend I didn’t like Steven Universe. It’s really hard for me to find animated series’ that I’ll actively watch, as opposed to leaving them on for background noise. Still, I was shocked (in the best way possible) to see their treatment of queer characters.

tumblr_nl4efdy0JW1u1e188o1_5001 (1)

The fact that two of the main characters are in a committed and loving same-sex relationship with one another, so committed that they become one entity… I suppose it could be argued that they’re playing on the stereotypical lesbian “urge to merge”, but I don’t care. I love them anyway.

‘Orphan Black’ Star Tatiana Maslany Talks About Diversity In The Hit TV Show.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Tatiana Maslany discusses the diversity of the characters she plays in BBC America’s hit T.V show Orphan Black. The show is a science fiction series based on cloning and by the end of season four there are 11 different character clones, each one very different and individual and each one played by Tatiana who has just been nominated for an Emmy for the second time.

What makes this programme so unique is the fact all 11 identical female clones portray the diversity of humans, especially regarding sexual orientation as one of the clones is a lesbian and another is a transgender. All of the characters are very complex and some have lives that are not considered normal. and when asked about her opinion on whether this was important she told Deadline:

It’s something that I’m most proud of on our show, especially that it’s through the eyes of a woman and the experiences of a woman.”

dt.common.streams.StreamServerTatiana also gave her opinion on one of the characters, Cosima, who is a lesbian and works as a scientist.

The way that we treat sexuality is something I’m extremely proud of and that I’m very political about as well. One of my favourite lines of our show is when Cosima says, “My sexuality isn’t the most interesting thing about me.” That to me is so important to drive home, to remember that as much as Cosima represents a large community of people, she is more than her sexuality.”

Tatiana was also asked about recent phenomenon regarding the matter of fact way sexual orientation is now portrayed on television. She said:

There’s a real bravery to storytelling right now—people are kind of fed up with misrepresentations of women, with the LGBT community, with minorities. These groups are so underrepresented. We’re so used to seeing men as the default perspective, and that’s just changing intrinsically.”

It’s very reassuring to hear that actresses who play lesbian or bisexual characters are also aware of the misrepresentation we often see in television or film, regardless of whether the actresses themselves are gay or straight. Tatiana is also very compassionate about others and their diversity as individuals as well as she went on to say:

There’s such a divide right now in terms of politics, in terms of people. There’s so much fear of the other, so much hatred. So I’m really proud that our show never really vilifies anybody, that everyone has a humanity and that everyone has vulnerability, and needs, and wants love, and deserves love, regardless of what they’ve done or who they are.”

Tatiana’s talent and the fact she is such an amazing person is one of the reasons the show has such a huge fan base. We all wish her the best of luck with her Emmy nomination for her role and let’s hope she continues to get the recognition she deserves.

15 Fictional Lesbian Couples That Are Ruining Our Collective Lives

If there’s one thing lesbians love, it’s other lesbians. Hey, we are notorious for jumping into a fandom just because of lesbian subtext – and sometimes that subtext is quite a reach! But 2015 was full of lesbian relationships (both on-screen and implied) just begging to take our attention.

And, of course, the lesbians obliged.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a shipper. I think I always have been, but for a long time it was really hard to see my ‘ships come true. Thankfully, the past few years have been very generous, and my inner matchmaker is giddy.

But what happens when these relationships don’t work out like they’re supposed to? Either the writers break them up, or they kill one off, or – even worse – they publicly announce that those characters are definitely not interested in each other, nor will they ever be.

Our hearts are broken on their behalf – it feels almost like our best friend’s cat died. We just have to learn to move on, and hope that, maybe someday, they’ll end up together after all.

#15. Palex (Paige and Alex, Degrassi)

Paige and Alex, Degrassi

I was a huge Degrassi nerd as a teenager – I actually kept an active account on their little fan site (I can’t remember the name of it now) and made LiveJournal layouts with my favorite characters. OK, so it didn’t hurt that I happened to be around the same age as these kids, and they were going through things that were actually relevant in my life. When Paige and Alex kissed for the first time, it was one of the catalysts for me coming out. (True story.) The fact that their relationship is still breaking hearts almost ten years later means I’m not alone. (Although I did always want to see Alex get with Darcy!)

#14. Golly (Gail and Holly, Rookie Blue)

Gail and Holly, Rookie Blue

While I have yet to watch Rookie Blue myself, I’m inclined to start. This show is your typical cop drama (I can get on board with that) – but there are female kissing scenes in it! I know it’s a bit of a stereotype, but one way to ensure you have lesbians in your audience is to have lesbian characters – and apparently the romance has a solid share of lovers and haters.

#13. Reamy (Reagan and Amy, Faking It)

tumblr_njzxibdTu11ssel0ao1_500

When I first started hearing about Faking It, I wasn’t really enthused. I sort of picked up that it was some high school girls pretending to be in a relationship with each other for some reason or another. But as time went on, I started seeing more and more members of the fandom popping up on my Tumblr – and I have to say, the pairing of Reagan and Amy is absolutely adorable. There are Reamy fans and there are Karmy fans, though – I wonder which ‘ship I’ll ship!

#12. Karmy (Karma and Amy, Faking It)

karma-faking-it-37028108-500-200

This is one of those canon-but-not-really ships we see sometimes. The characters are confused for lesbians, and you want them to really be into each other, but one of them was really just faking it the whole time. (Hence the name of the show!) As someone who has had many straight friends pretend to be my girlfriend, I think I’d sympathize with Amy in this Faking It ‘ship.

#11. Annalise and Eve (How to Get Away with Murder)

media_d9d01470-64bc-11e5-993f-0193dca05497

I love the idea of lesbian power couples (as I think most of us do), so Annalise and Even on HTGAWM are a match made in shipping heaven. Annalise is a high-profile defense attorney, and Eve is a lawyer who deals with death-row cases. The two are highly successful women with a passionate past – and of course we just know they’re going to get back together.

#10. Rizzles (Rizzoli and Isles, Rizzoli & Isles)

tumblr_lm6meqFiB61qjxkzbo1_500

Rizzoli & Isles follows Jane Rizzoli, a police officer, and Dr. Maura Isles, the Chief Medical Examiner. Although officially Rizzles are just best friends and colleagues, their lesbian fan base knows better. We can sense lesbian subtext when we see it, and these two belong together!

#9. Hollstein (Laura and Carmilla, Carmilla)

Laura and Carmilla

Carmilla is a web show I haven’t gotten the chance to watch yet, but it seems to fill the need of all those vampire romance lovers out there who are disappointed at the availability of lesbian bloodsuckers. With as many lesbians love vampires, wouldn’t it make sense that there’d be more? Anyway, in true vampire romance fashion, Laura is a young student and Carmilla is a 300+-year-old vampire – naturally! But somehow, despite these significant cultural differences, they manage to find love. Unfortunately, even when you live forever, relationships can still end – but we can hope for a reunion!

#8. Cophine (Cosima and Delphine, Orphan Black)

Orphan Black LGBT Characters 05

I can’t remember which KitschMix reader suggested I start watching Orphan Black, but I am so glad that I did – the relationship between Cosima and Delphine is complicated but beautiful (and Tatiana Maslany is gorgeous in every character). My partner has commented that she’s interested in seeing Helena in a lesbian relationship in the future – anyone want to ship it with her?

#7. Bubbline (Bubblegum Princess and Marceline, Adventure Time)

6635684a1151252762377eaf142afd04

One of my first sleepovers with my current partner involved her introducing me to Adventure Time – and naturally the subtext going on between Bubblegum Princess and Marceline. After a long conversation amongst the fans, in 2014 it was confirmed that BP and Marcy had, in fact, dated – putting all our little lesbian hearts aflutter. Sadly, things obviously didn’t work out between them – but it opens the door for different same-sex pairings in the future!

#6. Brittana (Brittany and Santana, Glee)

Brittana-3-brittany-and-santana-30916660-500-255

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only lesbian ever who didn’t really get into Glee – but I spend enough time on Tumblr to get the gist of this ‘ship. For the five lesbians left who don’t watch the show, either, it details the comings and goings at your typical American high school. Brittany and Santana start off as BFWB’s, leading to them making out on screen and eventually confessing their love for each other. I do like that these girls are both cheerleaders, as opposed to the “traditional” softball or tennis playing lesbians. This relationship has gone back and forth, causing fans to rip their hair out in despair, but thankfully these two worked it out in the end and are apparently still together in the glimpse into 2020!

#5. Korrasami (Korra and Asami, Legends of Korra)

39aba54be1b1996368f5887440638587

It’s still pretty ground-breaking to show same-sex relationships in animated shows, so the confirmation of a relationship between Korra and Asami a little over a year ago was a pretty big deal to anime-loving shippers. Apparently, everyone should have seen Korrasami coming – but some people still claim it’s a “reach”. Rest assured: The writers confirmed that this ‘ship really did sail.

#4. Vauseman (Alex and Piper, Orange is the New Black)

oitnb-alex-01

In my household, OITNB is one of very few shows all three of us watch religiously (me, my partner, and our puppy, of course). Alex and Piper are one of those couples that you don’t know why you want them to work it out, you just do. (I mean, it’s so obvious that they are terrible for each other! Why, why, why!) These two have been breaking hearts since the first season, but what’s eating at my heart is my poor sweet Nicky – please tell me she’s coming back in the next season!

#3. Bechloe (Becca and Chloe, Pitch Perfect)

tumblr_nxw7ml4mLc1sbv25to1_500

I honestly never had any intention of liking Pitch Perfect – I’m not a fan of musicals, after all, but I do have a giant crush on Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow, separately – so, of course, when people start speculating about their characters getting together – I am definitely on board. When you find out that the actresses are actually on board with this idea, too – our Fictional Gaydar Senses go insane! Will they or won’t they? No one really knows where the future will take them, but you can always get your fill of their fanfiction in the meantime.

#2. Swan Queen (Regina and Emma, Once Upon a Time)

tumblr_inline_nvacmrq46f1s74zi9_500

If you want an example of “when shipping goes wrong”, look no further than the Swan Queen fandom. When Once Upon a Time crew members Et Kitsis and Adam Horowitz each confirmed that Swan Queen will never happen. These two characters are definitely both straight, but they’re not opposed to having gay characters in the future. However, unlike most sunken ‘ships, this one actually outraged fans – enough that some vowed to never watch the show again. Yikes – talk about an overreaction!

#1. Clexa (Clarke and Lexa, The 100)

tumblr_nkd246B2tg1r1ux8yo3_500-1424963471

Clexa is a love story to rival Romeo and Juliet. They once were allies, but when Lexa betrays Clarke, all bets are off. Are they friends? Are they lovers? They’ve kissed, they’ve been through some tough spots, their feelings are still up in the air – but fans of The 100 want to know where this ‘ship is going, and soon!

So, which is it? Swanqueen, Karmy or Rizzles? Which fictional lesbian couple is currently ripping your life apart?

The Best (And Steamiest) Sex Scenes Between Women in TV And Film This Year

It’s always difficult to capture every good sex scene with the plethora of sexy TV on nowadays, but we dove in deep in the name of entertainment!

So as you get ready to ring in 2016, let’s take a look at the 10 most TV sex scenes of the past year.

Get ready to be hot and bothered.

1. The Duke of Burgundy

maxresdefault (2)

It would be difficult to pick a standout sex scene in Peter Strickland’s remarkable The Duke Of Burgundy, because the whole movie functions as an extended sex scene.

tumblr_ngqqhnrP7D1tcxkqzo5_r1_500

2. Cosima and Shay, Orphan Black

anigif_optimized-24106-1449528230-1

Honestly, seeing Cosima move on from Delphine was a tough pill to swallow. But a spoonful of Shay really helped the medicine go down.

3. Annalise and Eve, How to Get Away with Murder

The whole season could just be these two kissing and we’d still show up every week.

media_d9d01470-64bc-11e5-993f-0193dca05497

Watch, watch, and watch again

4. Big Boo & Rachel, Orange Is the New Black

6f688280-872e-0133-3937-06e18a8a4ae5

Orange Is the New Black has always delivered great lesbian sex scenes, but the show upped it in Season 3, Episode 4 when fans got insight into Big Boo’s past. Big Boo had a sex scene in a flashback where she used a strap-on dildo with her girlfriend at the time.

5. Nomi and Amanita, Sense8

tumblr_npn3qp0nV41qiohboo6_r1_400

Netflix pulled a lesbian hat trick this year, with this infamous scene that puts the pan in pansexual. While it’s not strictly limited to our favorite couple, it definitely turns up the heat.

6. Syd and Ali, Transparent

transparent-ali-syd_blog_landing_large

In a show riddled with narcissism and snark, it’s refreshing to see some sweet authentic kissing between long time friends-cum-lovers Syd and Ali.

7. Dianna Agron and Paz de La Huerta, Bare

Dianna Agron naked with another woman, need we say more.

8. Piper and Alex, Orange Is the New Black

anigif_optimized-11199-1449192741-4

Again we turn to OITNB, and if you’re going to have prison sex, why not library prison sex, hey? And when that heated romp is between, Piper and Alex its guaranteed to make our year.

9. The Countess, Donovan, & Their Victims, American Horror Story: Hotel

tumblr_nvvujhjYK21tp719lo3_540

In the first episode of American Horror Story: Hotel, Lady Gaga’s character, the Countess, was introduced with a bang. The blood-drinking woman hit the town with her boy toy of the decade, Matt Bomer’s Donovan, and seduced an attractive couple at an outdoor movie.

10. Jeryn and Pam, Jessica Jones

Melissa Rosenberg’s outstanding Netflix series Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) as the titular superheroine, not only features the creepiest baddie in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also boasts the MCU’s most dynamic, complex female character; a badass woman brimming with agency who enjoys sex just as much as she does administering justice.

But our pick isn’t JJ, but a scene between Jeryn and Pam. Okay, to be clear, this is an evil manipulative sex scene, but it manipulates an evil character, so it we feel okay with how damn hot it is.

11. Carol

Carol 02

The first hour of Todd Haynes’s expertly crafted Carol traces the burgeoning love affair between the titular Jersey housewife (Cate Blanchett) and a reticent Big Apple shopgirl, (Rooney Mara). It’s all furtive glances and sumptuous gazes—that is, until the two hit the road, putting constricting 1950s society in their rearview. It all builds to a sequence in a motel room, a paroxysm of unbridled pleasure that feels nothing short of monumental.

‘Orphan Black’ Introduces New Clone In Cryptic Season 4 Teasers (Video)

Orphan Black fourth season will be with us next spring (hurrah), and it’s about time we got a teaser for what’s ahead.

This brief peek, which debuted online over the Christmas holiday, is cryptic to say the least, but we do get introduced the official look at the newest clone, M.K.

According to this recent interview with Entertainment WeeklyOrphan Black co-creator John Fawcett describes M.K. as a “slightly traumatized clone who has a deep past” and a “Deep Throat kind of character.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEtig16FuBo

In addition to this teaser, team OB gifted us with a brief, unsettling, and eye-opening (wink wink) promo for season 4:

What looks like someone’s left eye blinks to reveal a ring of camera sensors. Could it be Rachel Duncan’s new eye? Or maybe it’s Delphine, who somehow survived being shot. We’ll have to wait and see.

Orphan Black‘s third season may have been uneven, but was still absolutely compelling, thanks in large part to Tatiana Maslany’s consistent and awards-worthy performance.

The series returns to TV in April.

Tatiana Maslany Feels ‘Strong Responsibility’ To Orphan Black’s LGBT fans

Tatiana Maslany has said that she feels a “strong sense of responsibility” to Orphan Black‘s LGBT fans.

Maslany portrays a number of different characters in the sci-fi clone drama, including scientist Cosima – who is engaged in an on-off relationship with Delphine (Évelyne Brochu).

Talking at New York’s PaleyFest Orphan Black panel, Maslany said

I knew subconsciously we were talking about bodily autonomy, but it was reading essays from trans people and gay people that opened my eyes to how that was being talked about.”

Orphan-Black-02

Maslany also praised the show’s style, adding:

What I like is the show isn’t preachy, it just is. We put women at the centre, [and] they’re the default, but who cares? And that to me is so awesome and I hope for more of that

It’s everywhere; reproductive rights, LGBT rights, transgender rights – I’m glad we get to reflect that. We talk about how your choices aren’t your destiny, your body’s not your destiny. You’re your destiny.”

In another interview earlier this year, Maslany talked candidly about the show’s bisexual representation between Cosima and Delphine – saying that she is not on display for the “male gaze”.

Orphan Black LGBT Characters 06

We offer good representation in terms of complex characters that aren’t defined just in terms of their sexuality, but by every facet of what it is to be a person.

One of my favourite things that has ever been written on the show is when [Cosima] said ‘my sexuality is not the most interesting thing about me’. They’re not ‘on show’, they’re not on display for the male gaze. They’re not sexualised in that way, but they are sexual with each other, and they are intimate.

Whether Delphine identifies as bisexual, however she identifies herself, she’s open to loving Cosima, and there’s no question.

It’s about the love between them, not about the fact that they’re two women.”

A Line From ‘Orphan Black’ Just Became the Internets Best Ever Lesbian Meme

As we all know, season 3 of Orphan Black is underway, and has us all crazy with anticipation.

In the last episode, Cosima — as Alison Hendrix — almost outs herself to a room of suburban moms while making a school trustee campaign speech.

Orphan Black fans on Tumblr quickly took the scene and ran with it.

But they were not the alone.

Soon, the floodgates were opened and no show was safe:

Tatiana Maslany Says Lesbian Sex Scenes in Orphan Black Aren’t for the Male-Gaze

This week on GLAAD’s video series, GLAAD: All Access, host Claire Pires interviewed Tatiana Maslany, the star of BBC America’s hit show, Orphan Black.

In this interview, Maslany talks candidly about the show’s LGBT representations, and specifically focuses on the bisexual representation between Cosima and Delphine on the show – saying that she is not on display for the “male gaze”.

Maslany portrays a number of different characters in the sci-fi clone drama, including scientist Cosima – who is engaged in an on-off relationship with Delphine (Évelyne Brochu).

Speaking to GLAAD, the Orphan Black star said:

In a surprise twist last year, the show introduced its first male transgender clone Tony, after the idea was championed by Maslany.

The show’s creators Graeme Manson and John Fawcett said at the time:

Maslany had already come up with the idea sort of on her own. There was never a moment where we were trying to convince her. We were all immediately on the same page.

We definitely felt the responsibility of portraying this. We did a lot of work and Tatiana did a lot of work to portray this character in a way that we felt was respectful of that community but also worked within the context of our show.”

‘Orphan Black’ Has LGBT Characters: So What Says the People Behind the Show

The three of the people behind Orphan Black — science adviser Cosima Herter and showrunners John Fawcett and Graeme Manson
– really don’t give a fig what you think about their LGBT characters.

In fact, they say their show looks more like the real world than its painstakingly heterosexual TV counterparts.

It’s less spectacular than it is actually a mundane fact of life.”

Since its premiere in 2013, Orphan Black has always been pretty queer.

Two years ago, Jordan Gavaris, who plays the Felix on the show, was applauded for defending the character’s flamboyance.

You cannot collectively as a society decide that you are only going to represent one part of a minority.”

Tatiana Maslany, who plays all the female clones on the series, said,

We sort of embrace the idea of every human having the potential to be anything, and I think that opens the door for all kinds of dialogue about sexuality and about gender.”

The key characters Cosima (played by Maslany), Felix, Delphine (Évelyne Brochu), and Tony (also Maslany) are all queer.

The show’s science adviser Herter says biology has always been used for political ends, to regulate “what’s a good body and what’s a bad body”. For example, it has been proven by science that women are inferior to men through science… “we can legitimize how we police them,” she said. It’s happened with women, and it’s happened with queer people.

But Cosima and Delphine, in particular, are characters who were “born this way” biological: Cosima, though she’s genetically identical to her sisters, is the one lesbian clone (that we know of), while Delphine identifies as straight, until she falls in love with Cosima.

Showrunner Manson says

I can think of three examples in my life that have been like that, that just wanted to be with the right person. It’s not about questioning your sexuality or not questioning your sexuality — it’s about finding your person. Yes, you can be born like that. All of these things come together to shape your sexuality, and it’s vastly complicated, and why not allow it to be slightly mysterious?”

Fawcett added

Within the fact that we’re trying to tell a paranoid thriller, we’re trying to show little pieces of humanity. But we’re not trying to make any sweeping statements.”

Orphan Black Season 3 Features Clones At War With One Another

Season two of Orphan Black was a wild ride for the Sarah Manning, Cosima Niehaus and the other clones who are all played brilliantly (complete with different mannerisms, accents and personalities) by Tatiana Maslany.

The three big events of the series finale were when serial killing clone Helena was abducted and (potentially) forced into war and “pro” clone Rachel had her eye gouged out with a pencil, but not before Rachel sent Delphine (the girlfriend of gay clone Cosima) off to Germany. There was also the introduction of Project Castor, who are the male (in terms of biological sex) counterparts to Project Leda.

In season three of Orphan Black, it’s those Project Castor clones that are going to be the biggest challenge for Sarah and co. Speaking to People, the show’s co-creator Graeme Manson explained that:

“This journey of discovering who Castor is, what they’re up to and how they apply to us is really a season-long trip that we’re taking. [The Castor clones] were raised like a little wolf pack in a military-type setting. They’re self-aware and aware of each other and aware that they’re multiples and different and special and that they have their own purpose. … The differences in how they relate to each other is one of the coolest things about it.”

Out of those Castor clones, we’ve met Mark who was part of the Prolethean cult that tried to use Helena’s body for surrogacy last season, there’s also “Scarface” Rudy who Manson says is “really an alpha and a proper psycho” and finally, there’s a soldier named Miller and another brother named Seth who we’ll meet in the season three premiere. The Project Castor clones won’t be making it easy for Project Leda should they decide to go and rescue Helena.

Manson also says that “Those questions of ‘How far will you go to protect the ones you love?’ are big questions for us this season” so hopefully we’ll get some more answers on that when season three of Orphan Black premieres in April.

The Clones Are Back, Season 3 Of ‘Orphan Black’ Is Coming, And We Have 4 Teasers To Watch

The clones of Orphan Black return to BBC America for a third season on Saturday, April 18, 2015, and we can’t wait.

Orphan Black is a brilliant example of good television. One of few shows to feature a female lead (Tatiana Maslany), who pays a variety of different clones who look the same but in terms of personality are anything but.

For the uninitiated, the five main clones are less than legal hoodlum Sarah Manning, the insanely intelligent Cosima Niehaus, finicky mother Alison Hendrix, trained killer Helena and ‘pro’ clone Rachel Duncan who was raised with awareness of her clone-ness.

There are other clones too and Maslany plays them all fantastically, proving herself to be the hardest women in television as she has different mannerisms, poses and accents for each character – which are so well done that you actually forget that they’re all being played by the same person.

Orphan Black Season 3 Promo Released by BBC

Orphan Black is in many ways a brilliant example of good television. One of few shows to feature a female lead, the show stars Tatiana Maslany playing a variety of different clones who look the same but in terms of personality are anything but.

Not only does Maslany’s stellar acting make the show what it is but some impeccable CGI and camera trickery from BBC America means that many of the clones even have scenes together. It’s wonderful to watch and it’s only going to get even more impressive with a line of male clones set to be added into the mix.

Not that we get that much from this latest Orphan Black season three promo, though. The Beeb is clearly staying coy on what we can expect as none of the clones feature in their nigh on identical glory, but what we do get is the sound of ‘You Don’t Own Me’ by Lesley Gore tingling in the background.

When we last saw Sarah Manning and co., there was a battle to cure gay clone Cosima as an autoimmune disease threatened to kill her off and potentially harm the other clones too. A cure could perhaps have been found in the form of Sarah’s daughter, Kira, but thanks to manipulation and impersonation (of course) from Rachel that plan was scuppered and Cosima was still ill as of last season.

There was also a budding romance between Felix (Sarah’s gay brother) and Tony (a trans, male clone) that could potentially be rocked by all of the drama surrounding their budding clone family and fans will also be awaiting news on Delphine (Cosima’s super smart girlfriend) as Rachel shipped her off to Germany in the season finale.

Could the new episodes showcase the clones not being ‘owned’ any more? Rachel did get a nasty pencil to the eye in the season finale. Or will the upcoming season feature the clones waging more anarchy against Rachel and the corporation that created them? It’s unclear from that promo featurette but we’ll enjoy finding out along the way.

Orphan Black season three premieres in early 2015.
