Susan Sarandon Says Her Sexuality Is ‘Up For Grabs’

Susan Sarandon has described her sexual orientation as “open” and “up for grabs”.

Sarandon said she would have relationships with people of any gender but added that she is not getting many offers.

Speaking to PrideSource, the Academy Award winner, who split from her longtime partner, Tim Robbins, in 2009, simply said she’s very “open.”

I’m a serial monogamist, so I haven’t really had a large dating career.

I married Chris Sarandon when I was 20, and that went on for quite a while – each of my relationships have. I haven’t exactly been in the midst of a lot of offers of any kind. I’m still not!

I don’t know what’s going on! But I think back in the ’60s it just was much more open.”

Asked if she was open about her sexuality, she replied:

Yeah, I’m open. My sexual orientation is up for grabs, I guess you could say.”

Sarandon also revealed she once had an affair with gay British actor Philip Sayer, who was her co-star in the 1983 vampire film The Hunger and who died in 1989.

She said:

I did at one point have a very successful and very loving and wonderful affair with a man who then wasn’t with another woman after me, and that worked out fine!

What’s It Like to Grow Up Trans in the South? New Documentary ‘Deep Run’ Answers

One phrase that we’ve heard a lot recently is ‘the transgender tipping point’; the idea that now, finally, we are seeing trans characters in the media and trans people’s stories being told on our TV and cinema screens.

For example, there’s trans woman of colour Sophia Burset on Orange if the New Black, 2015 film Tangerine follows two trans working girls, Amazon series Transparent follows a family dealing with their parent’s transition. And of course, recently there’s been the high profile transition of Caitlyn Jenner of Keeping Up With the Kardashians fame.

But while the trans tipping point has given us more trans characters and stories about trans characters that aren’t exploitative or dehumanising, that doesn’t necessarily mean that life has gotten any easier for the average, real-world trans person. Murders of trans people are at a historic high in the US, with at least 20 trans women having been murdered this year.

The intolerance against trans folk is particularly potent in the south of the United States, with these states locations being infamous for their high levels of religion and low levels of acceptance. Exploring what it’s like to be a trans person in this area is a new documentary called Deep Run, which follows trans man Cole Ray Davis in a ‘coming of age’ story that follows five years of his life living in rural North Carolina, including how he find acceptance from his family, his girlfriend and his church community.

Deep Run 04

Already, Deep Run has picked up several awards including Best Documentary at the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival as well as Emerging Talent Award at Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival, but these aren’t the only endorsements attached to the film.

Deep Run 01 Deep Run 03

In addition to critics praising it as a beautifully shot piece that really does its subject and its atmosphere justice, Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon (who is also Deep Run’s executive producer) says that the film is now more important than ever and she also tells The Advocate that;

There’s people that’s just trying to make ends meet, can’t find a job, problems that a lot of people have in the United States right now with poverty and hunger and homelessness, and then on top of that you add the challenges of transitioning without money for [medication], without real counseling, without the kind of support from a community that is so important when transitioning, and it became more and more important to me that this documentary was something people should see to understand other types of situations where people are transitioning and not just the glamorous life of Caitlyn Jenner.”

Deep Run02

Davis also spoke the publication about his life and experiences during Deep Run:

[Making the film was] fun and sporadic, more overwhelming than anything,” he says “It is difficult living openly trans in the Deep South, there are times when it can be scary, but for the most part I just brush it off and live my life. I fought so hard for acceptance because I thought I deserved spiritual help as much as anyone else did. And I was so tired of hearing Christians say we believe that only God can judge, yet their whole practice seemed to be about judging, and I just thought I wanted to challenge that, and see if I could be accepted.”

First Look at Elle Fanning New Trans Teen Movie ‘About Ray’

A trailer has been released for the new film About Ray, in which Elle Fanning plays the lead character, a transgender teen transitioning from female to male.

AboutRay-01

The film depicts Fanning’s character living with her single mother Maggie, played by Naomi Watts, and lesbian grandmother, depicted by Susan Sarandon.

Originally called Three Generations – the trailer gave us a heart warming sneak peak at what the film has in store.

Current representations of transgender people in pop culture primarily focus on those who have already transitioned (like Sophia on Orange Is the New Black) or those approaching the process later in life (Maura on Transparent).

About Ray tells the story of a teen’s experience, as a sort of transgender coming of age.

I’m done with being the exception! Prolonging this doesn’t keep me a girl any longer. It just keep me being who I already am.”

After Fanning’s casting was announced, The Atlantic ran a piece titled, “Is Elle Fanning Taking a Role From a Transgender Actor?”

About Ray isn’t the only fall movie that will tell a transgender person’s story with a cisgender actor in the lead role.

The highly anticipated film The Danish Girl, a period piece, stars Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe, a transgender artist.

Single actress Susan Sarandon is “open” to embarking on a relationship with of someone of any “gender”, confessing it “increases your chances” of finding a suitable partner.

The star has been single since splitting from Jonathan Bricklin in March following a six-year romance.

When pressed this week on The View, Sarandon answered questions on her love life by saying she isn’t “actively looking” for a new love, but

Outlining what she’s looking for in potential partners, she says,

Somebody who is not gonna find it difficult to be with me and (when) people come up to me and say, ‘Oh, I love your work,’ it won’t turn out to be a problem.

Someone who is really passionate about what they do and they love what they do. Someone who’s open and adventurous and travels and has a lot of fun. (Someone who is) spiritual, (it) doesn’t have to be religion, exactly…”

As she goes on and say what she’s looking for in a partner, Whoopi Goldberg says, “You’re starting to sound like me!” and they share a moment.

Tony Hawk Joins HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality

Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has released another video ad featuring professional skateboarder and CEO Tony Hawk. This is the third video released for the re-launch of HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality video campaign. Susan Sarandon and Demi Lovato have already shown their support for marriage equality through video ads.

“Like most Americans, Tony Hawk knows that all families deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, and equality under the law. We are incredibly grateful to Tony for speaking out in favor of marriage equality, and lending his voice to HRC’s fight for fairness nationwide.”

Charles Joughin, HRC

Hawk is one of the worlds most recognised action-sports figure. He regularly appears on television and in films, hosts a weekly show on the Sirius XM satellite radio network, and frequently takes his talent on the road with the Birdhouse Skateboards team.

Tony’s success and good fortune have inspired him to do what he can to help young people, so in 2002 he launched the Tony Hawk Foundation to help achieve that goal.

“We all deserve to follow our hearts, and we need to continue working until every state recognizes marriage as an equal right”

Tony Hawk

Same-sex couples can legally marry in nineteen states and the District of Columbia, while 31 states have a law or constitutional amendment restricting marriage to the union of one man and one woman. However, polling continues to show Americans moving inexorably in the direction of supporting equality for same-sex couples, and there are over 70 court cases across the country challenging bans on marriage equality.

Susan Sarandon Supports Marriage Equality in Human Rights Campaign Video

Susan Sarandon has voiced her support for marriage equality in an ‘Americans For Marriage Equality’ video by the Human Rights Campaign.

“While marriage might not be my thing, if it’s your thing you damn well ought to be able to have it equally and unequivocally. The America I want to live in celebrates diversity and believes in equal rights for all families no matter what what they look like.”

Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon’s celebrated acting career has spanned more than four decades, earning her dozens of award nominations and wins, including the 1995 Best Actress Academy Award forDead Man Walking.  Sarandon has used her fame and success for good, supporting numerous charities and goodwill efforts around the globe.  She has been honored for her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, as an advocate for victims of HIV/AIDS and hunger, and in 2006, she received the Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award.

“Like most Americans, Susan Sarandon knows that all families deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, and equality under the law. We are incredibly grateful to Susan for speaking out in favor of marriage equality, and for lending her powerful voice to HRC’s fight for fairness nationwide.”

Charles Joughin, HRC

This is the second video released for the re-launch of HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality video campaign.  Earlier this month, platinum-selling recording artist and actress Demi Lovato lent her voice to the cause with a web video and an email to HRC’s more than 1.5 million members and supporters, calling on all Americans to support marriage equality.

Kathy Bates Discusses Her Lesbian Role In ‘Tammy’

LGBTQ favourite Kathy Bates talked to Michigan gay weekly Pride Source about her lesbian role in ‘Tammy’ – also staring Melissa McCarthy (who I’m addicted too), Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd.

In ‘Tammy’, Bates plays Lenore, a lesbian woman in a relationship with Susan (played by Sandra Oh of Grey’s Anatomy.)

“She brought a lot of love and warmth, and it was her idea to have wedding rings — because of course! — which I hadn’t thought about, and also, really, to think that our relationship is the healthiest relationship in the movie. It was important for me to be able to ad-lib how difficult it is, or was, especially 20, 25 years ago, for lesbian women to come out,” she recalled of one scene she shares with McCarthy. “I think almost more difficult than for men to come out as gay.”

Kathy Bates

As for who her dream co-star would be if she tackles another lesbian role, Ms Bates said…

“I shared a plane trip with Uma Thurman once and I thought she was pretty cool. I could see doing a movie with her and having a lesbian relationship — although I’m much too old for her!”
