Gossip’s Beth Ditto Collabrates With Jean Paul Gaultier To Launch Plus-Size Clothing Label

One of our greatest fashion-music muses – frontwoman Beth Ditto – has created a special collaboration with the French designer, Jean Paul Gaultier to celebrate the announcement of her own clothing line.

Ditto’s designs haven’t yet been revealed, but the announcement was made with the launch of a T-shirt dress featuring a print of Jean Paul Gaultier’s iconic conical corset on the front and back, with a working lace-up back.

Of the collaboration, Ditto says,

Jean Paul is the most generous, positive person, he truly loves women of all sizes and ages and knows how to make everyone feel gorgeous. I love that this shirt is funny and chic at the same time, like all the best people!”

The pair has been inseparable since Ditto walked the Gaultier runway in a custom gown, which was featured in a retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum.

A portion of the proceeds from sales will go to the Girls Rock Camp Foundation, for which Ditto serves as advisory board member.

Gaultier added in a joint statement

Big girls are beautiful and Beth is super beautiful. Long live the beauty with shapes, boobs and bottoms. This is a new concept, a loose fit corset. And Beth fits it perfectly”.

As for what to expect from Ditto’s full collection, the singer says it will feature “current styling with a vintage flair”, as well as “vibrant prints and well-tailored pieces, with silks, rayons and embroidery that are frequently missing from plus-size lines”.

Ditto adds:

This line is by us, for us, period. It’s my lifelong dream to get to design real clothes for big people, clothes that are comfortable and cool!”

Ditto’s full plus-size collection will be available in February.

Lesbian Fashion Icons – Yes We Have Them, and WOW They’re Hot

Our list of Lesbian Fashion Icons. From the way they wear a shirt, to the cut of their blazers, lesbian celebrities are certainly making their mark and the age of dyke chic is here…

Beth Ditto

We just adore Beth Ditto’s style. Why, because there is no one in this world quite like her or in her league when it comes to fashion. Known for her band, Gossip, Beth Ditto radical feminist ora could not give a crap if she is a size 26, as she has never heard of the term “self conscious”. In fact, give her an item of clothing three sizes too small and she’d be all over it. Her brightly coloured Lycra playsuits seem to be her favourite. She’s loud and proud and we look up to this.

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose certainly knows what she’s going to wear in the morning before she steps out the front door. She is the definition of style – tattoo’d sleeve, vests and skinny jeans is her signature outfit, along with quirky piece of jewellery, which she nails it every time. Ms Rose came out as a big lesbian young, and since then she has always had this edgy cool look about her – she is a women who know’s what she wants in life and that is always a positive thing.

Kate Moennig

In The L Word, Kate Moennig played the tomboy / butch, against the ultra femme backdrop. In playing Shane, she has started a trend, which queer girls all over the world began to copy. The look is simple – white vests with blazers, converse on feet, and straight black hair with a floppy fringe. Most want to be her, and in the L word every lesbian wanted her. Her just-out-of-bed hair, is now the definition of ‘alternative lifestyle haircut’ – its bends gender.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen’s classic suits, crisp trousers, body-conscious sweaters and vests are tailored to be youthful, trendy and flattering. Matched with bright, playful colours and worn with sporty white trainers, Ellen have carved a fashion look that American go crazy for. She is the lesbian staple when it comes to fashion – she proves that menswear is not just for stone butches, but soft and fuzzy day-time-TV super stylist divas too.

AzMarie Livingston

Far from being a classic metropolitan girl, AzMarie Livingston hails from the conservative mid-west town of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Standing almost 5’10″, AzMarie gay essence certainly informs her fashion style. Blazing her own trail, she is unafraid to show her tattoos and sports a crew cut. Her look is unique and she is stunning. We completely understand why Raven-Symoné is smiling so sweetly now.

Spotlight | Beth Ditto’s punk wisdom

If our generation could only boast of one truly badass body positive punk babe, her name should be Beth Ditto.

Ditto, the curvy lead singer of the indie rock band Gossip, is known as much for her disorderly conduct as for her open support of gay rights. Read Ditto’s story below!

Gossip

Gossip was formed in 1999 by three musicians from Arkansas, Beth Ditto being one of them. The band quickly gained a loyal fanbase. In 2007 Gossip signed a big contract with Sony’s LGBTQ music subsidiary Music With a Twist and quickly reached mainstream popularity both sides of the Atlantic.

Lately Gossip’s music has evolved from their early indie garage sound to more of a synth pop or even dance pop style. Most music critics have accepted the new style, but some early fans feel left out.

This, however, does nothing to diminish Beth Ditto’s unique charm. Read on.

Disorderly punk badass beauty

Ditto is not your traditional fashion model. She’s big and beautiful and punk. She claims not to wear deodorant or shave her armpits because that’s just how punks roll. Ditto happily shares dirty details like this in the hope that all women would realize they can define their own sense of beauty and be happy with their body as it is.

To underline her body positive message Ditto showed off her naked curves on the cover of the first issue of Love, an edgy British fashion magazine. She also used to run her own advice column in Guardian, dealing with body identity issues.

True to her rebellious image Ditto was detained in 2013 by Portland police for second degree disorderly conduct after blocking the street and throwing items, while cheerfully screaming ”Obama, Obama!”

Zesty!

Ditto’s dream wedding

In 2013 Ditto got married on Maui, Hawaii, to her former assistant and long-time girlfriend Kristin Ogata. Ditto wore a beautiful white dress by Jean Paul Gaultier and her fiancee had a white jacket. Both were decorated with white flowers. A classic dream wedding.

Both before and after the ceremony, Ditto has kept herself in the open. She does not shy away from the publicity. Through her music, through her writing and through her sheer presence Ditto is trying to give young girls a role model, an example – something she says she never had as a kid:

”Because I didn’t have any queer, lesbian, female role models I hated my own femininity and had to look deep within myself to create an identity that worked for me.”

Luckily, today so many gay women are out of the closet that every teenager can see with their own eyes the wide variety of female identities. This should make Beth Ditto happy.
