Black Mirror’s San Junipero proved queer stories do work

San Junipero broke with Black Mirror’s usually-bleak depiction of technology and the future, with a notably upbeat and heart-warming love story between two women.

The acclaimed episode, which was near-universally acclaimed, picked up an Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.

Charlie Brooker, who wrote the episode himself, also picked up the award for Outstanding Writing for a TV Movie.

The episode starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis as lovers Kelly and Yorkie.

Kate McKinnon showed the world she’s a comedy goddess

Kate McKinnon was one of the early winners of the evening Sunday, beating a field that included some of her Saturday Night Live colleagues to take home the award for supporting actress in a comedy series.

The first openly lesbian cast member of the sketch comedy show, McKinnon made her mark this season with portrayals of Hillary Clinton, Jeff Sessions, Kellyanne Conway, Betsy DeVos and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

‘Gender traitor’ Alexis Bledel is recognized

Picking up her award at last week’s pre-show Emmy’s, Alexis Bledel won the outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her haunting performance as Ofglen, in the dystopian The Handmaid’s Tale.

It was her first Emmy win.

RuPaul played a living Emmy statue

During the telecast, host Stephen Colbert sat down for an interview with the Emmy statue herself, a golden-winged woman played by RuPaul, TV’s most famous drag queen.
RuPaul was a winner this year too, nabbing the award for host of a reality or reality-competition series for the second consecutive year at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend.

Samira Wiley looked way to cute with her wife, Lauren Morelli

Wiley and her wife, Orange is the New Black writer, Lauren Morelli stole everyone’s hearts with how cute they were on the red carpet and during the ceremony.

But she was pipped at the post by her co-star, Ann Dowd.

For her outstanding work on Saturday Night Live playing Hilary Clinton during an election year, Kate McKinnon was recognised with her second Emmy for best supporting actress in a comedy series.

During her acceptance speech, she also took a moment to specifically thank the former presidential candidate.

On a very personal note I want to thank Hilary Clinton for her grace.”

McKinnon – who is Saturday Night Live‘s first openly gay female cast member – back-to-back wins also makes Emmys history for S.N.L., which has actually seen very few of its regular players nominated (let alone win).

Queer Female Stars Push For Further Visibility At This Years Emmys

The Emmys are almost upon us, but before Sunday, Sept. 17 rolls around, we wanted to take a look at the female queer stars who we think deserves to win.

Can You Guess Which Celebrity Impression Kate McKinnon Did To Get Her Spot On ‘SNL’?

Before Kate McKinnon was Emmy winning, ghost busting and bad-ass she was, like many starry-eyed, young comedians, just trying to get an audition for Saturday Night Live.

In a recent interview PEOPLE, McKinnon revealed her nerve-wracking SNL audition.

It was very scary. If you’re a sketch comedian, SNL is the job you want to get. It’s so important in the history of American culture, and it was such an important part of my life growing up.”

McKinnon says adds

You’ve got five minutes to do whatever you want, so I did like five impressions and a couple of characters. I honestly don’t remember all of them. Penelope Cruz was one of them.”

The comic stars in the upcoming animated film Leap!, which is about an orphan girl who dreams of being a world-class ballerina.
McKinnon, who voices three characters, including the villain Regine, loved not having to worry about hair and makeup while working on the movie.

That is absolutely the best part. It’s nice to see a tale about a girl who is not trying to get married. She has a passion and something she wants to accomplish in the world.”

Kate McKinnon’s ‘The Magic School Bus Rides Again’ Gets A Premiere Date

Though Kate McKinnon’s film career is taking off thanks to her work in Ghostbusters and Rough Night, she’s best known as one of the regular players on Saturday Night Live.

McKinnon has shown, whether it’s channeling Justin Bieber or a woman who claims she was abducted by aliens, that she’s adept at voice work and impressions.

Thus her role in the animated The Magic School Bus Rides Again is a natural fit. Here she’ll voice the beloved character of Ms. Frizzle.

McKinnon is also voicing three characters in the animated flick Leap

Rough Night Cast Talk About The Film’s LGBT-Inclusivity

The cast of Rough Night, including SNL’s Kate McKinnon – our lesbian national treasure – recently sat down with drag personality Paige Turner to talk about the LGBT-inclusive film.

Rough Night follows McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Scarlett Johansson, Ilana Glazer, and Zoë Kravitz on the night of a bachelorette party that quickly turns hilariously lethal.

Rough Nights is out in cinemas now. Watch the trailer below.

Kate McKinnon Makes Epic Talk Show Entrance

The art of the talk show entrance is something many have attempted to master of the years, but Kate McKinnon made quite the impression on “Live with Kelly & Ryan” show this week.

Instead of politely waving to the crowd or pretending to sign autographs, McKinnon performed a 35 seconds full-on dance routine, kicking off her shoes, high fiving audience members, and more.

Kate went on the show to promote her new film Rough Night, in theatres on Friday!

While being interviewed for PEOPLE’s annual World’s Most Beautiful issue, Amandla Stenberg talked about the constraints of the gender binary and the fluidity of gender identity.

I tend to believe that gender as we’ve set it up in current-day society doesn’t actually exist. I’ve said before that I’m comfortable with using the pronouns ‘they’ or ‘them’ alongside ‘she’ and ‘her’ just because that’s a conversation that’s important to me. I don’t necessarily always subscribe to female pronouns just because I don’t think that pronouns are necessarily very meaningful.”

Ruby Rose has also been honoured, and she embraces her sexuality in the issue.

I’m very confident and in tune with my sexuality. I feel very blessed for that, because in different places around the world, people can’t be.”

We ask for this data because we want to keep ourselves accountable,”

Kate McKinnon Playing Kristen Stewart On SNL Was Everything We Hoped And Dreamed

Whether she’s playing Justin Beiber or Hillary Clinton, Kate McKinnon comedy is always spot-on.

Last weekend on Saturday Night Live, the show pitted stars from 1977 against stars from 2017 in a time-traveling Family Feud.

Harry Styles cameo’d as Mick Jagger, and host Jimmy Fallon played both a younger, and an older, John Travolta.

However, Kate McKinnon really stole the show. Her impression of Kristen Stewart? Flawless.

Between her slight mumble, her “mind=blown” gesturing, and her awkward physicality, McKinnon totally nailed it.

Top 5 Lesbian SNL Sketches, Ranked

We already know that Kate McKinnon is the best thing to ever grace our gay TV screens. And we know that Kristen Stewart’s visit to SNL turned us 200% more gay. But there’s no such thing as too much lesbian humor.

So let’s back at some of SNL’s best (and queerest) sketches, shall we?

5. Whiskers R We

Lesbians like cats. And repressed lesbians love cats.

In this recurring sketch, McKinnon and a female guest host play two middle-aged women who work at a cat rescue shelter. The female guest host always has an unrequited crush on McKinnon, which leads to lines like:

McKinnon: “That is my nipple and I think you know that.”
Wiig: “I think I know you like it.”

and:
McKinnon: “Keep it in your jorts.”

Other great lines?

“Cats have paws, claws and 0 flaws.”

“This cat is a gift from God. At least that’s what he told the members of his cult.”

The good: Kristen Wiig pinching Kate McKinnon’s nipple on live TV.

The bad: They will put cats in your car when you’re not looking.

4. The Concert

Wow, has it already been nine years since Ellen Page came out as gay on SNL?

AKA, wow, has it already been nine years since we fell in love with Ellen Page?

In this sketch, she plays a young woman who has found herself (and a lot of lady lovin’) at a Melissa Etheridge concert.

At one point, Page splits her legs into a deep V and moans, “Why does everything have to have a label? Why can’t I just hug a woman with my legs in friendship?”

The good: Lots and lots of…friendship.

The bad: Andy Samberg and Ellen Page should switch haircuts.

Watch it here.

3. Dyke and Fats

In this homophobic, fatphobic world, who is humanity’s last hope? Les Dykawitz and Chubbina Fatzarelli, AKA the crime-fighting duo Dyke and Fats.

The good: This duo can save me anytime.

The bad: Is the world ready for a savior who’s not a straight white man?

2. Cherry Grove

When gay men have fun, they dance, strip, have crazy sex, start drama and wear a lot of glitter.

When lesbians have fun…they don’t. They do puzzles and have tearful arguments.

The good: Five miracles of home water birth.

The bad: What on earth are water socks?

1. Totinos

This is one of the only post-2012 lesbian sketches on SNL McKinnon hasn’t appeared on – and yet it’s the most gay.

A cheery housewife (Vanessa Bayer) is perfectly happy making pizza rolls for her “hungry guys” – until Kristen Stewart shows up in a leather jacket, and they start having sex on the counter. While speaking French.

The good: Pizza rolls.

The bad: The camera cuts away before we see them reenact Blue is the Warmest Color.

Kate McKinnon’s New Role? Driving The Magic Schoolbus

Would you take a ride on Kate McKinnon’s magic schoolbus?

Your favorite ’90s kids’ show is back, courtesy of Netflix’s seemingly endless crusade to resurrect all of our favorite shows and slaughter them.

However, this is one (of few) shows that is actually worth being excited about, if only for its lead star. Kate McKinnon, every lesbian’s imaginary wife (and my future real wife), is reprising the role of Ms. Frizzle. And suddenly twenty-something queer women around the world want to watch this children’s show.

The Magic Schoolbus book series and show taught children about science. In the show, a group of quirky and diverse schoolchildren followed their even quirkier teacher, Ms. Frizzle, on field trips around the world.

But not just any field trips – that wouldn’t be so “magic” now, would it? The eponymous magic schoolbus could turn into a plane, a spaceship, a surfboard or even a blood cell, to take children literally anywhere they needed to go. In one episode, the kids flew inside of a volcano. In another, they time-traveled back to the dinosaur age. If you’re not a Magic Schoolbus fan – or Frizzhead, as I think they should be called – then start with the definitive ranking of all 52 episodes.

So why Kate McKinnon? Of all the comedians in the world, why choose one of the most controversial? By casting SNL’s first openly gay cast member, Netflix runs the risk of upsetting the homophobic parents of children all around the world. (After being exposed to Kate McKinnon playing Ms. Frizzle, all of the female children will most certainly grow up to become gay.)

However, casting a queer woman in the role isn’t new. Ms. Frizzle was originally portrayed by Lily Tomlin, an openly gay comedian. Although Tomlin didn’t come out during her reign as Ms. Frizzle, rumors had been swirling about her sexuality since the 1970s.

Even before McKinnon was cast in the role, Magic Schoolbus fans had decided that she was a lesbian. For some reason, they decided to ship her with Mary Poppins. The Internet runs amok with Ms. Frizzle/Mary Poppins crossover fanfiction, for reasons unbeknownst to the natural world.

If you’re in the mood for a lot bit of nostalgia and a little bit of queer subtext, then tune into the show when it airs later this year. A date has not yet been announced.

Kate McKinnon To Finally Star in Own Movie

For four years, Kate McKinnon has been slaying audiences on Saturday Night Live. You’ve probably guffawed at her Hillary Clinton impression, cheered as she won an Emmy and nursed a major crush on Ghostbusters’ Jillian Holtzmann.

She’s finally going to steal the lead in a major film. She’ll play Grunhilda the Lunch Witch in the adaptation of young adult novel The Lunch Witch, about a malevolent sorceress forced to work in a school cafeteria. The sorceress connects with a misfit student named Madison, who is the only person who believes in Grunhilda’s magic, and the two help each other against all odds.

Clay Kaytis, who directed The Angry Birds Movie, will direct.

Sadly, this is not the edgy girl-on-girl lesbian romantic comedy that fans were hoping for. In fact, Grunhilda the Lunch Witch isn’t queer. But the fact that the leading actress in a major motion picture is a lesbian is a major leap forward.

McKinnon is one of the few openly gay actresses whose commercial career seems to be on the rise. Ellen Page, who acted in Juno (2007 – grossed $231 million) and Inception (2010 – grossed $800 million), has not starred in a film that’s grossed over $20 million since then. Kristen Stewart, known for the Twilight series (grossed over $1 billion), has stuck to low-budget independent films since openly dating Alicia Cargile.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with Page’s and Stewart’s career decisions. Perhaps they’re more comfortable with small indie films, or perhaps they’ve found it more difficult to find big-budget work in Hollywood since coming out. It’s most likely a combination of both. That said, it’s refreshing for an openly gay actress to head up a major film.

McKinnon fans agree that her step into stardom is long overdue. She has, according to The Daily Beast, “that rare quality that megastars have of commanding our attention even when they aren’t actually doing anything.”

The Lunch Witch is expected to open in 2018.

Kate McKinnon’s ‘Hallelujah’ Will Break Your Heart

Now, I’ve heard there was a secret chord

That David played, and it pleased the Lord

Around the country, millions of viewers hold their breath, eager to see how Saturday Night Live will address the shocking 2016 election. Will Alec Baldwin-as-Donald Trump swagger out, telling America they’re in for “yuge” changes? Will he peel off his mask to reveal he’s a killer clown?

Will Larry David return as Bernie Sanders to scream about Armageddon?

But you don’t really care for music, do you?

A pool of light illuminates a simple piano. Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live‘s first openly gay cast member, sits behind it. For the past two years, she has played Hillary Clinton.

McKinnon’s Clinton is a robotic, power-crazed woman two steps removed from being human. But now, etched into the lines on McKinnon’s face, we see depression. Resignation. The weariness it takes to move forward.

It goes like this

The fourth, the fifth

The minor fall, the major lift

While sixty million Americans were ecstatic about Trump’s win, the proposed policy of his Vice President threatens to set back women’s and minority’s rights. The election strikes a major blow for Hillary Clinton, who was projected to win in nearly every major poll. The election also strikes a blow for people like Kate McKinnon, whose right to love seems suddenly tenuous.

The baffled king composing Hallelujah

The song could be seen as a tribute to songwriter Leonard Cohen, who passed away early last week. If not for his death, SNL probably wouldn’t have opened with the song – and yet, “Hallelujah” is heartbreakingly perfect. That week’s episode couldn’t have opened any other way.

tumblr_ogkge0eb3z1qawdfpo1_540

I did my best, it wasn’t much

I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch

Those two lines are buried within Cohen’s rendition of the song and were eliminated from Jeff Buckley’s, so they may sound new to you. However, when McKinnon sings them, the song seems to come to a standstill. She is playing Hillary Clinton, a woman who gave her whole life to politics and yet seems to be left with nothing after this election. She did her best, it wasn’t much. And McKinnon is also being herself, a woman who is now faced with a Republican vice president who openly hates LGBT people. She did her best, it wasn’t much.

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

And yet, despite the skyrocketing hate crimes, despite the growing number of KKK protests in the South, and despite the frightening policy that Trump promised to enact – despite all of that, McKinnon sings, “Hallelujah.” She sings “Hallelujah” on behalf of every LGBT, Muslim, black, impoverished, marginalized and oppressed person whose life has just been turned upside down. She sings “Hallelujah” on behalf of every queer girl reading this article.

screen-shot-2016-11-13-at-10-19-12-am

I’m not giving up, America
And neither should you

When McKinnon finishes the song, she snaps back into her Hillary impersonation, but there are tears in her eyes. Her voice cracks. We are supposed to see her as Clinton, but instead we see a fractured and vulnerable Kate. We see a fractured and vulnerable America. We see ourselves.

Kate McKinnon Lost Her Emmy (But That’s A Good Thing)

The talented Kate McKinnon won an Emmy earlier this month… but she has no idea where the trophy went.

gettyimages-611025696-1475168028

On The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, the SNL and Ghostbusters star talked about how she blacked out most of Emmy night, and lost the award in the process

Why You Have A Crush On Kate McKinnon (Even If You Don’t Know It Yet)

She oozes swagger as Holtzmann in Ghostbusters. She floats as Fitzwilliam the Boy Who Wants a Vagina on The Big Gay Sketch Show. She embodies the Clinton presidency on Saturday Night Live. And she loves cats.

Kate McKinnon is every queer woman’s dream.

1. She’s Saturday Night Live‘s first openly gay cast member.

giphy-30

SNL has been around since the 1970s, but it wasn’t until 2012 that Kate McKinnon became the first cast member to acknowledge her sexuality – breaking barriers for LGBT comediennes everywhere. Thank you, Kate!

2. Her Crazy Eyes are legendary.

tumblr_o5ooskxhy41rwd9wio1_500

Ice blue and sharply slanted, Kate’s trademark Crazy Eyes could cut through glass. There’s even a website devoted to them called Kate McKinnon’s Crazy Eyes. Sure, they may be unsettling at first, but she loves with the same intensity as her gaze.

3. She loves her cats.

tumblr_oak52qlwcp1tstd16o2_400

According to her, they are her sons. They are her husbands. She has talked about her cats on Ellen a hundred times. Wouldn’t you like to raise a cat family together?

4. She’s better at being Justin Bieber than Justin Bieber is at being Justin Bieber.

giphy-31

She definitely looks better in Calvin Klein.

5. She’s as passionate about theatre as she is about women.

tumblr_n0n458fkqi1r6iq8mo1_500

She’s been performing and making people laugh for decades. She’s staged three sold-out one man shows – that’s right, she entertained hundreds of people completely by herself – and critics loved it.

Watch Disenchanted: “The beloved fairy princesses of your childhood pop a few Klonopins and eat themselves into a coma.”

6. She’s a dedicated musician.

giphy-32

She plays the piano, cello and guitar, and at Columbia University she founded a musical improv group called Tea Party.

Sarah Paulson Finally Wins Her Emmy, Tells Girlfriend “I Love You” During Touching Acceptance Speech

It finally happened: Sarah Paulson has won her first Emmy, for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie, and ended her speech by telling her girlfriend, “Holland Taylor, I love you.”

Taylor has returned the love with this adorable tweet.

Paulson won for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in The People vs. OJ Simpson, an FX limited series on the infamous murder trial that made caused a media storm in the mid to late ‘90s.

Playing a real person while they are still living is a big responsibility. She is the mother to two children who were very young when the trial was going on, and were not really privy to a lot of what she was put through. I just kept thinking, I hope this doesn’t hurt Marcia any further. I hope the things that we are doing don’t inflict any more pain.”

During her acceptance speech, Paulson used her time onstage to publicly apologize to Clark—who was sitting in the audience—for misperceiving her, as much of the public did, during the O.J. Simpson trial. Afterward, Paulson told reporters why she brought Clark as her date and felt the public apology was necessary.

That wasn’t the only queer moment at this year’s Emmy Awards, with gay SNL and Ghostbusters actress Kate McKinnon winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

McKinnon appeared visibly moved, thanking her SNL boss Lorne Michaels and dedicating her trophy to her late father, who first introduced her to the NBC sketch staple at age 12.

McKinnon wins on her third consecutive nomination for Saturday Night Live.

And it appears the television academy members aren’t the only ones who thought McKinnon deserved this award:

Jeffrey Tambor, a cisgender male actor who plays a transgender woman in Transparent, won best actor.

In a moving acceptance speech, he addressed the lack of authentic representation of trans people in Hollywood.

Please give transgender talent a chance. Give them auditions. Give them their story. Do that… I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male playing a female transgender on television. We have work to do.”

Jill Soloway won the award for Best Directing for a Comedy Series (Transparent), her second win in the category.

Thank you to the trans community for your lived lives. We need to stop violence against transgender women and topple the patriarchy.”

Just before exiting the stage, clutching her golden trophy tight, Jill cheerily quipped, “Topple the patriarchy!”

Tatiana Maslany won the Emmy for best actress in a drama series for her performance in Orphan Black. The actress beat out Viola Davis in How to Get Away With Murder, Claire Danes in Homeland, Taraji P. Henson in Empire, Keri Russell in The Americans and Robin Wright in House of Cards.

And Clea DuVall joined her VEEP cast-mates for a Best Comedy Series win alongside Anna Chlumsky and Best Actress in a Comedy Series Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Ghostbusters’ Director Says He Can’t Confirm If Kate McKinnon’s Character In The Film Is Gay

Since the reboot was announced, people have been losing their sh*t over the new Ghostbusters simply because the ghost-busting crew is an all female cast.

But what seems to freaking people out more, is the possibility of Kate McKinnon’s character being gay female Ghostbuster.

ghostbusters-gay-wink

Sadly Ghostbusters director Paul Feig (also responsible for Bridesmaids and Freaks and Geeks) talks right around the subject in an interview with The Daily Beast’s Jen Yamato, even as he assures us that he hates doing so.

I hate to be coy about it. But when you’re dealing with the studios and that kind of thing… You know, Kate is who she is and I love the relationship between Kate and Melissa’s characters. I think it’s a very interesting, close relationship.

If you know Kate at all she’s this kind of pansexual beast where it’s just like everybody who’s around her falls in love with her and she’s so loving to everybody she’s around. I wanted to let that come out in this character.”

I wasn’t like, ‘And now you should wink at them.’ This is stuff that is coming out of Kate! That’s why you connect with those characters. They’re playing versions of themselves. That’s what makes a comedic actor fantastic, when that personality comes out. That’s why it’s so terrible when writer-directors say, ‘Stick to the script!’ Why would you hire these people who have these enormous personalities and then just cut them off?”

tumblr_o3h0z65Ilp1qzco77o3_250

It seems that given the lack of LGBT characters in major movies, the dearth of out actors, the overall avoidance of gay subject matter in Hollywood, Feig & co., had the opportunity for easy diversity and forfeited it to take the safest route possible.

Feig is coy on the matter of his character’s sexuality, but elsewhere in the interview, he pats himself on the back for what his movie’s representation represents:

“I’m proud of the fact that you have four women starring in a movie and three of them are in their forties. I really credit [former studio head] Amy Pascal and Sony for letting me do this. It’s crazy that that would be a big thing now, and it’s sad that it is. But thank god.”

The New Ghostbusters Trailer Is Here (And It Does Not Care About The Haters)

The new Ghostbusters film will be with us this July, and, hey, it still looks pretty great.

In the latest trailer, for the upcoming reboot, and it leans in just a little bit on all the (admittedly sexist) hate the first trailer received. There are even direct references to some characters thinking our four heroes aren’t up to the job, because they’re women.

We also get another look at what the new team is facing; and according to Kristen Wiig’s voice-over narration, “somebody is creating a device that amplifies paranormal activity.”

In the trailer we get tons of shots of Wiig, Jones, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon facing off against some colourful ghosts while decked out in their signature gear.

There is also Chris Hemsworth’s receptionist being possessed by an evil ghost, and the debut of the giant ghost terrorizing the city.

Will There Be Lesbian Romance In The New Ghostbusters film?

Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters reboot with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon just got its first official trailer on this week, and we’re are already speculating about McKinnon’s character Jillian Holtzmann.

There appears to be some flirting with McKinnon’s edgy, short-haired, slightly off-kilter character, Jillian Holtzmann, and Wiig’s straight-laced scientist Erin Gilbert.

McKinnon is Saturday Night Live‘s first openly lesbian cast member, and while she’s not necessarily playing a lesbian here, her magnetic performance is certainly inviting speculation, particularly due to one particularly saucy wink and a subtly suggestive smile.

ghostbusters-gay-wink ghostbusters-smile (1)

And yes, this would be a huge moment if McKinnon were to play a lesbian character in Ghostbusters – a mainstream science fiction comedy that could very well be one of the biggest hits of the summer

While it’s probably wise to keep expectations low, this could spark a new trend for LGBTI characters in mainstream science fiction fare.

Last week, Star Wars director JJ Abrams responded to the fans wanting a romance between Finn and Poe or any gay character.

When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity,’ he said. ‘So of course . . . I would love it. To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
